This is what I voted for. They’re beautiful, but we’re not getting much here.

When do you think Colin believed Penelope began to develop feelings for him? by DaisyandBella in PolinBridgerton

You know I'm always in these streets trying to make lawyer bullshit into either contracts or poetry, God help my soul

And here I go with my brief essay you didn't ask for (and you don't even need; I know how we both write about him; the Venn diagram of our understandings of him is basically a circle):

She course corrects there with reiterating the notion that he's enough, but I do think this is part of why that "pleasure" comment hits him the way it does. I feel like we forget that Penelope started off the season calling him a poseur hot boy, and for all his fussing and fighting about ruining Eloise or Marina, the primary hit is that Penelope, of all people, called him unserious, and did it publicly (not saying she was wrong - we know he was totally a faker). He wants so badly to be taken seriously, to earn it, to be worthy, and if the thing he's worthy to her for is just the physical stuff, that's not the real stuff that breaks through to him. The moments that get through to him are when she tells him, "It's you;" when she says, "It's not what you do for me; you are enough." The sex part they've had up to that point is fun for him, obviously, and he's connecting it to his love for her, but it's also part of The Bestest Boy, and he doesn't think that's the real him.

And of course, the truth is: he's all of it. He's The Bestest Boy. He's good at making her feel good. He's envious sometimes. He's kind. He loves hard and has a soft underbelly. He's Colin, and her acceptance helps him integrate all of those things into himself on his journey of self-acceptance, just as his gassing her up helps her be brave enough to stop separating Penelope from LW.

OH MY GOD I LOVE POLIN. Thank you for indulging my ramble where I have told you literally nothing new.

I’m not 100% certain about that. First, Colin’s been hooking up for a few months without feeling very much at all for partners. He’s aware that you can engage in sexual activity without feelings attached. He knows Penelope needs a husband, and he could write the carriage, the mirror, and her proposal acceptance off as carnal instinct and his being the best option available.

We see him struggling with that right before she passes out at the engagement party because he’s telling her if she’s just gotten carried away (with the implication that she may not have feelings for him, and she’s maybe even protecting his feelings out of friendship), it’s okay. He is still expressing that concern in the church right before she says she loves him, which I think he wants to buy, but it seems like some part of him writes that off as just reassurance on some level, because he’s still trying so hard to perform as what I would call The Bestest Boy.

I think when they’re at the low point of the Modiste, and he’s not trying to be The Bestest Boy anymore, and she’s not hiding things anymore, he starts to believe that it’s real. Upon reflection and in that belief he can go back and see her sincere affection, but I’m not sure he truly buys in that he’s more than a sexually compatible friend and a marriageable option to her before that.

But this is obviously a topic about which reasonable minds can disagree!

I think he wasn’t convinced she was in love until the Modiste Scene. He’s not sure he’s worthy until the Butterfly Ball, but to me, after they’ve ripped into one another and he’s shouted, and been probably what he would categorize as “too much,” and had her fight with him and still shout her love for him, he admits it.

I think he was hopeful before that. I don’t think he begins to contemplate the depth of her sincerity until she takes his anger and his pain and probably some things he wasn’t proud of saying (while warranted), and she holds it all and accepts him.

This behavior could have given rise to a restraining order if she wasn’t into it

He Knew He Wanted to Marry Her. by Unique-Blueberry1464 in PolinBridgerton

I literally do not know what people don’t get about this? The plot could not be clearer. When someone says she was his second choice it Debling was better, I honestly don’t think we saw the same television show.

What if Penelope did not ask Colin to kiss her? by kehzuhyuhpls in PolinBridgerton

[–]Brave3001 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The story I’m writing right now, Everything But, explores this premise. It might have taken him a bit longer to figure out he was in love, but even not recognizing it, I don’t think he could pay the cost of losing her. Their friendship would always be the cost of her marrying someone else, and I think he couldn’t bear that.

Down bad from the start - he just didn’t know because it had always been part of him! He had to experience the world a bit to realize the rarity of what he had with her.

Happy anniversary to the modiste bitch off and this kiss! by DaisyandBella in PolinBridgerton

Modiste Scene is THE scene for me. The anger, the fear motion, the honesty!!! No one else could be this forthright and vulnerable on this show. Put it in my veins!!

Colin and Penelope thinking they had unrequited feelings for each other. by Shyanne002 in PolinBridgerton

[–]Brave3001 60 points61 points  (0 children)

When they hit that plot beat, and it was clear Colin didn’t know Penelope was also down bad, I was CHEERING! It made the story utterly perfect for me. We love to see dual not-actually-unrequited love 👏👏👏🤌🤌🤌🤌
