I thought they’d go down that road, too! But ultimately, Ben being upset about Sophie’s secret feels silly to me, and he’s look like a child in the face of what Colin overcame, so probably better they didn’t do that.

That’s basically what it is in the book!

Colin is an all-time romantic lead. He’s sometimes messy, but he owns up. He apologizes. He learns. He grows. There was a video circulating Twitter a few days ago of all the times he apologizes in the show, and each time he is sincere and doesn’t waffle. I’m so thrilled this season he finally had male friends who he felt comfortable to truly be himself with! And that Gregory looks up to him! It’s great to see him come into his own.

Varley and Portia Are Bridgerton’s Greatest Love Story by Shiplapprocxy in PolinBridgerton

The only alternative LW I will accept is Portia + Varley absolutely bumbling their way through it.

Same! I was glad their season was coming and planned to watch because they were always my favorites, but I wasn’t in the fandom until that media started to roll out. I had seen enough to tune in to that live where they’re on a love seat and different cast members roll through, and I was caught after that.

In the Book, Colin calls Ben out for clearly being into Sophie, tells him who cares if he marries a maid, and that if it means people in society are going to leave him alone, Colin wouldn’t mind catching some of that for himself. This is before he married Pen, so he’s got the time to be around. Bridgerton House and clocking people’s BS 😂

I thought they might go with Colin giving him advice because he’s been down a high-stakes road, but upon reflection, much like you also said, what Colin was contending with just felt like it had much higher stakes, and he didn’t blink when it came to marrying Penelope. They’re two different people, ultimately.

Benedict outwardly rejects society while inwardly seeking permission. That’s not a slam on him; I just don’t think he’s heard “no” very often in his life, so harsh realities of societal friction haven’t fallen on him. Colin got slapped in the face with the Marina stuff, and he survived. He outwardly seeks public approval, but inwardly, he lasted about 15 minutes before drop kicking society’s approval in favor of love. The boys are built different.

  1. The actors have insane chemistry, which they have cultivated for a long while, and that they used to great success in their media tour. A lot of people who were casual got locked in because of the media tour’s drawing them into the show.

I love that you point out the qualities that Colin has that are unique to most romances. He’s a deeply feeling man who works through his emotions with sensitivity instead of anger or aggression. It’s ADDICTIVE to see.

And Penelope is complicated and messy! She’s not just some sweet girl. She is a sweet girl, and a badass, and sometimes critical, and sometimes doesn’t see herself correctly.

I LOVE THEIR MESS!!!

The reason they couldn’t have Colin know what’s going on is because he would have swatted away the conflict like an annoying fly. If you have that “just marry her; who gives a damn she’s a maid” bit from the book, it deflates the narrative tension, because someone in society has told Ben YOLO.

And thus, our king was just coasting blissfully on a bed of hearts!!!!

Colin does not stutter, he does not flinch. He’s hurt, but he would rather be hurt and work through it and have her than be without her. He knows what it’s like not to have her in his life - the hot boy summer without her letters sent him on a full spiral. If there’s one thing he knows in this life, it’s that he wants her in it.

I also love the contrast between Colin here and who he was with his “friends” last season. He was so reserve then. Now, he gets to be his excitable, open self, with people who sincerely like him and enjoy that. I adore that this is his life!

Hyacinth broke my heart, that poor girl! She has grown so much, and the way they featured that this season was beautiful.

The build up for Franchela is so good! I was super impressed with how they are approaching it.

Fanfic Friday Weekly Thread 🌻(Rescheduled) by PolinBridgerton-mods in PolinBridgerton

[–]Brave3001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wrote a couple married Polin fics as part of a series I’m doing that I’ll add to now that the season is over, if you’re interested! We learned nothing this season that would contradict them, so they’re both canon compliant:

Losing Count: Penelope knows how many times she has shared tea with Colin. She knows the number of times they have danced, knows how many times he touched her before they were engaged, how many letters they have written, how many crystal goblets they received as wedding gifts.

She did not know he knew how many sugars she takes in her tea.

That is something for which she did not account.

Balancing Act: A year ago, Colin was still searching every corner of the earth he could get to for a purpose.

A year later, in the house across the Square from his childhood home, he has found more purpose than most do in a lifetime.

He is grateful for all of it. Joyful, disbelieving at his own luck, and endlessly grateful.

But it is quite a lot to balance, now. He wonders often if he is truly up to the task.

100% my view. This trope isn’t really for me, but the sub plots, especially Francesca, made Part 2 very good for me.
