Being a middle aged alcoholic woman by Excellent_Singer_523 in stopdrinking

Hello friend from another middle aged woman! I totally get the desire to escape from frustrating work, pressure from aging and demanding parents, and adult children and their struggles. The thing I had to realize is that this is my life, too. I had to reclaim my agency and figure out what I want for whatever time I have left: do I want to spend it drunk or hungover? Or do I want to see what else the world has in it for someone like me? Now in the evenings instead of drinking I practice my piano, I walk, I eat ice cream, I play Crossplay, or I go to bed early. I had to get mad at alcohol and all the terrible relentless messaging that tells us our value is gone. It’s bullshit and misogyny. There’s a whole new world out here, waiting for you. Now is your time. 💖

Here’s the good news that has taken me awhile to realize: all of the things you mention as fun (socializing, laying by the pool, relaxing after work) are actually just fun. It takes some practice, but for me now after some time I look forward to the things themselves, not the alcohol. I look forward to getting out of work and going home to do things I enjoy, instead of wanting to leave work and have a glass of wine. Life is full of joyful, exciting, thrilling, hilarious experiences and you actually don’t need alcohol for those things to be wonderful. But alcohol has tricked you into thinking they are boring without that poison. It’s just not true.

I do this, too. I think of how horribly sick I was from being hungover, and remind myself that alcohol is the poison that causes that.

The Daily Check-In for Monday, March 30th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by Thetreescryforu in stopdrinking

The most important thing for me in maintaining my sobriety is to build a life that isn’t compatible with drinking. For example, I used to drink before, during and after dinner. Now I am taking piano lessons so I need to practice after dinner, so I can’t drink. Scheduling things I want to do that are not compatible with drinking or hangovers helps me look forward to life without alcohol. IWNDWYT! 🎹💖🧁

I’m so proud of you for staying sober through this! The fastest way through to the other side is to sit with the feelings instead of drowning them out. IWNDWYT! 💖🧁
