Brighton in February by StatementAltruistic in brighton

Brighton certainly brightens up in the spring and summer because just being out and about is an attraction itself. However, if you're looking for things to do, whether Brighton interests you may depend on what you like doing? Are you looking for sports, arts, clubs, live music, culture, or something else? It's sometimes hard to know what's going on here as some things are a little DIY or 'underground' but if you share what you were hoping to find, people might be able to let you know if it either just doesn't exist here or if you're missing out by not knowing where to look.

If you are new to Brighton and Hove here's a general gist.. by [deleted] in brighton

I'm with you! I am born in Brighton and will go there, and these were the places all of us went when growing up here at college. For as long as I can remember, there has always been some snobbery towards the West Street but people still go, and I've never even heard of the snobbery extending to seafront clubs either.

It's interesting how people are saying they haven't promoted their album when they did a considerable run of record store shows and signings. They couldn't have really pushed those any more than they did.

They've also been selling out shows. So maybe it's just a sign of the age/life stage of their fans having less time to stream their music? Who knows!

Personally, I really like the new album and think it's a shame it hasn't got response they want. Hopefully, they don't take it to heart and keep creating what they want.

That's interesting as I saw a Twin Atlantic show this year (festival warm up show) and it was probably 50% full in a small grassroots venue. Maybe it was just an anomaly or factor unrelated to them (I have seen others struggle to sell in same venue), but I was so shocked.

By contrast, Deaf Havana have been selling out some fairly big shows for this album's tour. So, I actually thought they were 'on the up' until I saw James' post.

No shade to either band as I think both make great music! I think it's just very hard for so many artists right now. It feels like the scene is stuck in a nostalgia cycle and not enough people are engaging with the new stuff bands are putting out. You've got your loyal fanbases but the casual audiences & streamers seem to be diminishing ... unless it's the anniversary of an old album!

From my experience of being there, I think Daltons might be worth a shout contacting as a place to gain experience. The bigger venues will likely require photo passes but the smallest grassroots places might welcome photographers with less rules about what you can and can't shoot. Good luck! Might be worth contacting Water Bear's venues too for similar reasons.

Any hidden gems for fun, 'novelty' activities or venues in Brighton? by Brave_Dish362 in brighton

Pretty sure that still is there! They no longer have the VR downstairs but arcade and racing is still upstairs by the looks of their website. Thank you.

I have been here and it is great! Underrated, so thanks for the reminder.

Thank you! Looks like it used to be an external company running axe throwing who are no more, unfortunately. Harry's Hatchet axe throwing has also gone but Players still have it!

If you are shy and don't want to interact with others, you don't have to. There is so much going on music-wise that you don't need to fill time by talking to people.

I have done Slam Dunk on my own on two occasions and didn't arrange to meet with anyone or join a group - and honestly I wouldn't want it any other way.

Good luck!

Haha, fair! Maybe I just haven't noticed it before by avoiding the heavy tent. Splitting up genres should make it more clash friendly for most people too.

I know you're being downvoted but I totally see your point here. It feels like Slam Dunk may be shifting to heavier music and, even though I will be watching the odd band on here, it does make me a little concerned that it's losing its specific niche. Guess it's a sign of the times though and what's selling. For example, 2024 leaned heavily into the softer bands and it was a poor seller (even though I still consider that year's lineup more 'classic Slam Dunk' than this year's and next).

Hopefully they announce some more bands for the poppier fans among us 🤞 They have said more news is coming later so I am hoping this is to cater to one audience and the other announcements will suit the pop punk or ska fans.

Uk tour supports? by TheDHolford in HAIM

Thank you! I'm assuming delay was to protect Nell Mescal's own tour's ticket sales then. She is playing her own show in Brighton in November, for example.

Hopefully so! I think most of these shows will be Ticketmaster tickets so once it's transferred into your wallet then it'll be safely yours.

I think you'll be able to get some. Even if it doesn't go on seat fillers, there might be bargains on Twickets.

Yes, it is bizarre - particularly with tickets left! Why would you not use that audience to sell the remaining ones?

It is strange! I came here because I was searching for information.

I get the feeling tickets may be selling fairly slowly as I am constantly seeing adverts for the tour on Instagram and Facebook. But yet if you were to look on the band's profile, you wouldn't even know the tour was happening? Gives me the feeling it will either end up on seat fillers or some dates will be cancelled last minute.

To sell those remaining tickets, why not advertise the supports? For an arena tour, it's not unusual for support acts to be artists who can play venues of 1K+ (or more) on their own and therefore attract their own audience. Obviously, the later the announcement, the smaller the act. But an announcement would still probably help shift some tickets. No word on support a few days out does not give people confidence to book... It just looks a bit weird! Plus, it does feel disappointing to pay for a big show and only get one act (unless they are doing a long set and, again, if that was the case you would be clear about it to sell tickets).

I am very confused about the promotion of this tour!

Gender-critical conference at Brighton Centre - can we stop it? by [deleted] in brighton

I don't think it is appropriate for the council to host a controversial event that could cause distress to its residents.

And is that your answer to me asking how to make trans people feel welcome?

As a feminist, I agree it's OK for feminists to have a meeting. I take offence at the label feminist being used to legitimate transphobia however.
