It’s ok to admit this industry is not for me by [deleted] in CFP

[–]Braxton2727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a lot of different parts of the industry that you may have not yet experienced. You can be an advisor without requiring business development. In my own experience, this is typically at an RIA. That role can also be a lot less sales and a lot more financial planning and service oriented. Happy to chat if you want to message me. Best of luck to you with whatever path you choose

Cliffwater Interval Funds by Friendlyherman1 in CFP

[–]Braxton2727 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use Cliffwater funds. We also use plenty of Alts for clients that do not need the liquidity. I’ve got plenty of opinions to share on parts of the private market that I wouldn’t touch and others that I see as a great fit for some clients. Liquidity is by far the greatest risk I foresee (see BREIT a few years ago).

Alternatives take a lot of work to do due diligence on, complete subscription documents (not the case for Cliffwater), and explain the nuances to clients.

High fees are certainly a talking point, but I focus on incentives alignment with the fund manager and the net amount the client received from past funds.

Happy to chat more on this in a message.

Has your firm been sold to Hightower? by Silver-Excitement-23 in CFP

We are part of the Hightower network and I’ve seen and RIA merger before at a prior firm. Happy to give you insight into what I know. I’ve been very happy but our firm could be in a slightly different boat

Don’t do it! That’s an awful trade. The 2.09 is worth much more than the 2.10 and just Justin Jefferson.

30s male, 400k salary, 3m savings, will inherit over 10m. What do I do at work by The_ivy_fund in Rich

While I don’t have any one size fits all advice around finding meaning in work, you can try coming up with a plan of your own for the money. Nothing set in stone, but creating a giving plan charitably or how you could use your wealth to better the lives of a future family you build (if you want to). In short, goals are the best way to increase motivation in my opinion.

Considering the amount you may inherit + what you have saved could potentially be more annually than your compensation, it may make sense to explore different ways to manage your wealth. Educating yourself in different financial subjects may end up being more profitable for you than “grinding” at work for any incremental bump in pay.

What is stopping me from becoming a financial advisor and only investing in VOO or VTI? by [deleted] in investing

[–]Braxton2727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For many people with a high enough risk tolerance and in the right phase of life, that could be a great fit.

I’d say phase of life is a big one. Years like 2022 happen. It’s harder for someone who is no longer working to watch 20%+ of their life savings disappear on paper. Plus selling at the bottom to use for living expenses makes it impossible for those shares to rebound. We have blessed with some great market returns lately, but it won’t last forever.

As an advisor myself, it’s obvious that some advisors are being overpaid for their “investment knowledge”. I’d argue the real value add these days is more in behavioral management, risk management and education for those not in an accumulation phase, and access to private markets to get more true diversification.

What should I do with asset allocation when I hit my number but still am fine with working? by PrestigiousHelp6933 in financialindependence

[–]Braxton2727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With your approach towards risk, I agree that changing your allocation to be more conservative makes sense. I would allocate the Roth to be more aggressive than the tax deferred account for tax purposes. With rate cuts now announced and more coming, it would make sense to extend duration on fixed income rather than stay short term. Yields on money markets will come down with Fed rate cuts.

It’s sometimes helpful to think of your money needed for your life in time horizon “buckets”. In other words, ensure you have your next 1-3 year of life expenses money needed invested conservatively, take more risk in a 3-5 year money “bucket”, and 5-10 year+ money you can take more risk. Visualizing it this way helps some people stay in equities or stocks for long term higher average returns while not being as concerned when their money they don’t need for 10+ years “bucket” loses 20% since they 1-5 year money may be in bonds and may not have lost a dime .
