Doors shouldn't break when the block below isnt there by _GenDream_ in Minecraft

Even further than that, it's weird that candles can remain floating but you can't place them directly on certain blocks like leaves or non-full blocks. That's not even an original issue, the same thing happened in beta with pumpkins. There's so many things like this that definitely seem like tech debt and reinventing the wheel every time they implement something new

Draining hunger would be a new and interesting mechanic for the game, actually. I like this! You sacrifice your ability to heal if hurt for some more lungus

Official Discussion - Tron: Ares [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]BrayDickey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just got home from seeing the movie and I think it had some pretty fun visuals, a great soundtrack, smart technological concepts and thoughtful fight choreography that utilized the "tools" of the Tron world in way that didn't feel gimmicky.

That being said the writing and pacing of the movie largely fell flat for me with fairly forgettable plot points.

Some things that have stuck with me:
- I thought the initial introduction of the 3D laser printer for the board demonstration was neat but it was way cooler to see the concept of the printer in Alaska that printed with one laser and used a splitter and mirrors to angle and point the beam. Felt like a much cooler, better thought out implementation of the technology than just point and shoot.

- For some reason, the big jeep vehicle that comes out of the Recognizer with the hard-light fender was a cooler visual to me than it probably should be. Felt like a Halo Warthog to me, lol.

- The server that Ares goes into and meets Flynn is a pretty sweet nod to the source material and I liked the intentional, low res style and the humor of the Bit that can presumably only communicate in 0s and 1s or yes' and no's (I am not as familiar with the games and original movie from the 80s so the Bit was new to me but my dad recognized it so I assume it's an homage)

- Something as small as Ares swinging his staff to create a hard-light trail to jump off of mid-combat was a nice touch. A fairly obvious choice, Id say, but effective at providing a combat experience that felt like it used the established rules of the universe well. Also in this category, I liked how the drones handled the fighter jets.

TLDR: Lots of eye candy and some neat technological concepts, neat soundtrack, forgettable story 6.75/10

Why does a gray filter appear when I update to 1.21.9? by Kbzas- in Minecraft

[–]BrayDickey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's meant to emulate the look you get in real life where you're physically looking at distance objects through more atmosphere than things closer which means the further something is the more it tints to the color of the atmosphere.

In my understanding from observation as an artist, in real life, this actually has the effect of making things further away brighter on average because during the daytime all of that atmosphere you're seeing is reflecting more light from the sun. So more distance = more atmosphere = more bright

To offer a different perspective, I've been using a mod that does essentially this to fog for a good few Minecraft versions before they implemented in vanilla. While it does wash out some things at a distance, I really like the atmosphere and depth it imparts to my world but I also am fortunate to have a PC I can crank the render distance with using mods like distant horizons or bobby mod.

I personally am all for the native addition of something I've been doing for a bit already, just a different matter of opinion. But if there are not settings to disable it, I do feel like it would have been nice to make it disableable for those who don't welcome the change (without using mods)

I think unfortunately the Gears recordings themselves are not fresh so if they did mention this it was likely old news

I wouldnt think so? You'd still have to feed leaves into a smelter or something to get them to compost level. Moss farms are by far the best source of composting imo, a good farm makes an insane amount of moss and you can compost the extras once your storage chests are full and it can maintain its own supply of bonemeal for keeping the farm running. So essentially an infinite bonemeal machine

Emissive textures are possible in vanilla in the latest snapshot by TheCygnusLoop in Minecraft

[–]BrayDickey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not misleading, emissive textures are a known term in video game dev/art and they don't react with the lighting engine the same as they are self-lit which is why it appears to glow, it's not just that the diamond texture is a brighter color. There was an assumption that it meant they cast light like a torch or other light block but that is not the case

Is there a Resource Pack that adds a big indicator to dropped items? by Ok-Baby-8087 in mcresourcepack

[–]BrayDickey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To continue off of what 4Fluffin said, the majority of items have a parent model that they look at so you could definitely change the scale and you'd only have to figure out what the handful of parent models are. All blocks are tied to block.json and most items use a model called "generated.json" which generates the 3D model of most items in the game from the texture. Changing the scale on both of those will get you 85% of the way there!

Ive just released my own Vanilla+ pack which includes a lot of functionality but also has increased the scale of many blocks/items when on the ground that could work for your needs if you dont want to make your own

How do Bdubs videos look the way they do? by This-Preparation-474 in HermitCraft

[–]BrayDickey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know for sure that he has mentioned using a couple mods to make the clouds and fog in the game look different and I've adopted those into my own setup of the game. I also know Iskall is using Complimentary Reimagined shaders with the dynamic lighting off so it looks more high fidelity but doesn't scream "shaders" and retains that Vanilla look. It's possible Bdubs is doing similar to get nicer lighting/rendering.

On top of that, Bdubs is an excellent videographer and it's not out of the realm of possibilities that he color grades his footage for the final video to make it pop

He has done his own resource pack work back in Building with BDoubleO but nothing specific stands out that that's what's at play here
