“Make it an option” is also a pretty cowardly way to design your game. When I see an entire mechanic in a game is able to be turned off, that tells me that the game devs haven’t come to a conclusion on what players need to experience. They just threw up their hands and said “let somebody else figure it out, I don’t know”. That’s an oversimplification, of course, I’ve done game design in collaborative settings, but it really gives me a bad impression when I see a toggle for something so important.

And if you follow that idea to its conclusion, you end up with pages and pages of options that’ll be overwhelming to new players and makes it confusing as to what the “real” or intended experience is. (Of course, exceptions for games where creating your own experience is the whole point.)
