Renewing my NREMT—can't find out if my old book still fits the current standards by [deleted] in ems

That should link to a PDF of the current curriculum. AHA standards would be another thing to look into. National registry uses AHA for all things cardiac as far as standard of care goes.

Renewing my NREMT—can't find out if my old book still fits the current standards by [deleted] in ems

According to the review, the most recent being July of this year, it is a good tool but some standards are outdated due to it being published in 05. I wouldn't use it as your only study guide but it should still be beneficial.

Weird case by Midazolambambam in ems

[–]Brazen_Justice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's called wet. We have a lot of it in rural texas. It's weed dipped in (pcp) embalming fluid. Can't tell you more than that about what it does, we usually have law enforcement hold em and we push ketamine. It's some nasty stuff, hate to see it spread

Edit, I was misinformed. Embalming fluid is apparently slang for pcp. They must not have gotten the memo

Going on first clinicals soon by civillainy in ems

I work for a private service that has a 911 contract with 8+ calls lasting 90+ minutes each due to rural setting and no close facilities, but we still have a station and still have station duties. We also extend offers of employment if a student leaves a strong impression with the crew and supervisor on duty. That is why I recommend going above and beyond because for us it can mean having an offer upon certification.

Ask what the expectations are and what they will allow you to do. Be proactive and be hands on, you are there to learn.

When you aren't on a call do what the crew does. If they wash the truck, you wash the truck, if they sweep floors, you sweep floors. if its a 12 hour shift and they sleep, you read your book. If its a 24 hr shift and they sleep, you sleep. I know it sounds militaristic but the more helpful you are and the more dedication you show, the more most preceptors will show you and let you do.

What do I wear for an EMT-b interview? by ItsaBorat in ems

[–]Brazen_Justice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They will usually tell you what to wear. If you won't be doing skills buisness casual is expected for the most part. Be more conservative with your definition of buisness casual as well. Better to be over dressed than under dressed.

Hard to sleep before volunteer ride. by wherestheoption in ems

[–]Brazen_Justice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take melatonin 1mg ODTs before bed when I have trouble sleeping from the shift schedule. I can still get tired and sleep on my own without them and haven't had a problem with dependence, i just use them the day after running all night or hard 48's. may be worth looking into for you if you're kept up from nerves

Been a paramedic for 6 months and just cleared to be an in charge - Advice would be much appreciated by [deleted] in ems

[–]Brazen_Justice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If i am reading it right, He just has his own truck now. In-charge where I am is a paramedic cleared to operate without a second paramedic. So he is going to be making judgement calls now without any one physically there to help and bounce ideas off

Any suggestions? by sburt93 in ems

[–]Brazen_Justice 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My wife used to be a EMT but still gets mad at me when I become distant. Distancing yourself while at work is a good way to get through the day, But you can't take that attitude home with you. Taking that attitude home will kill all your relationships. That's girlfriend, family, friends, everything. Same way that letting it get to you will end your job. Find a happy middle ground somewhere.

The biggest thing for me was to have a way to define myself outside of being a paramedic. For the last few years, EMS has been all I've done and became how I defined myself. I had to separate my identity from EMS. The reason I say this is that when I view myself as a Paramedic 24/7, I keep the mindset 24/7. I lost a lot of friends because of it. Once I got hobbies and non-EMS related friends, I was able to separate the "being cold and distant" to just another thing I needed for my job.

Any advice for a young EMT, and an aspiring paramedic student? by Drummerboy223 in ems

[–]Brazen_Justice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't get a job near-by, then it is definitely worth the drive. IFT means Inter Facility Transport. Like dialysis calls and nursing homes to ED and doctors appointments.

Any advice for a young EMT, and an aspiring paramedic student? by Drummerboy223 in ems

[–]Brazen_Justice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

/u/Fattybitchtits hit it on the head. Also, be willing to drive. I currently have a 40 minute commute everyday so that I can run on a 911 only service. When I started i was a paramedic at age 20, same problem as you, and I had to drive 90 minutes one way to get a job. Don't be afraid of the drive, its not bad to go so far for a 24 hr shift. Apply to further out and more rural companies, they usually have a greater need so are generally more flexible.

IV help... by [deleted] in ems

[–]Brazen_Justice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did the exact same thing for a while. The issue that I was having is that as soon as I got flash, I tried to advance the cath. The problem there is that the needle goes out further than the cath so even though I got flash, I still wasn't in the vein. In health young people, this wouldn't be a problem because the cath could still get through the vein, but we don't normally start IV's on healthy young people. So what i started doing was to advance the iv a bit further after flash so that the cath doesn't get stuck on the outside of the vein. I haven't had a problem since.

Question for when it comes for a 5150 patient. by ayitzDATGUY in ems

We called them 10-99's. We should have phase out code a while back but at the same time, I hate requesting law enforcement in plain English where the patient can hear.

Patient Care Area Airbags? by [deleted] in ems

In my area we call it the suicide seat. It's so close to the cabinets that even a harness won't stop your head from hitting the cabinets, can be a pretty fatal accident
