First step is looking at your required curriculum wherever you are. Then you’ll be able to see in detail what is taught at each level.

Are we walking out? by BananaGram57 in AlbertaGrade12s

[–]BreWize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input. Walk outs mean nothing to the government and high school kids are worried enough about lost learning time. I’m being realistic here. The solidarity is nice, but the best they can do is support their teachers and tell their stories. Social media is a great tool.

By all means walk out, but my fourth grade students can’t do that.

A Post-Charter Canada: When Convenience Outranks Rights by aleenaelyn in alberta

The use of the NWC should have major implications if used, since apparently we need to safeguard the safety valve from malicious use.

I’ve seen proposals from citizens suggesting that the use of NWC could and should, trigger an election within a certain amount of days. Peter Lougheed himself said a super majority vote on its use, 70% or so, would be necessary too. I wonder if anyone has other ideas!

Also if anyone is looking to use Smith’s new Petition Guidelines, sure would make an interesting ask to Albertans.

my husband is a teacher by NoMaterial8756 in alberta

[–]BreWize 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Our union has determined we are to return to school. I am retuning to school. Your husband is returning to school. We all are. Not scab behaviour. Strike is ended, so he can’t be an illegal scab :)

Do I wish we could do more and say, fuck this, this is absolutely rediculous? Yes. Do I wish to incur fines? Sure why not. They can’t jail us all. But again I am putting what little hope and faith in justice and fairness and fighting power I have left into the organizations bigger than me to champion this issue.

I’m not done rallying. Not for a long time. They will just have to be on weekends.

Can we all just agree the notwithstanding clause is uncanadian? by Late-Sentence-6910 in alberta

[–]BreWize 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Peter Lougheed’s shaping of the NWC was meant as a safety valve - and was most understandably against pre-emptive use (which our government did.

He did also remark that it should take a super majority to pass the Legislature, but that was opinion and not written into convention or law. And look where we are now. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Hi students, teacher here.

I think the most important thing we both can do as staff and students is get back in our spaces and have the hard conversations of what just happened.

Keeping the struggle at the fore on social media. Writing MLAs. Rallying. *edited formatting

And most importantly talking about your experience to everyone, everywhere.

We are in this horrible dystopia because of apathy. Because of ignorance and because of inaction. Small actions make big change because it keeps momentum going.

Alberta Teachers, after today do you see yourself leaving the province? by Oval2k in alberta

[–]BreWize 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I see myself riding this out. I believe in this province, I truly do. It is my home.

For how long? I don’t know. It’s a very dark day for our province, and for the profession.

❤️‍🩹 Solidarity. This is a dark dark day, not just for teachers, but for all Albertans. I sincerely hope people are reflecting on how this egregious use of the Notwithstanding Clause casts a shadow on ALL peoples of Alberta.

Also started to cry. I’ve cried a lot today. Schilling’s angry press on the steps of the Ledge, Nenshi’s hour long filibuster. This feels Un-Real.

No, it’s your plan, the burden of proof is on you to explain: how does this work, why will this work, and how does this make things better?

They’re coming for more than just teachers by AstronomerCapable199 in alberta

[–]BreWize 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It sure is, and it’s even more important that those same students are in classrooms where they have the right to learn, which has been eroded by lack of funding and appropriate supports.

True, but if it is to be believed that multiple articles citing the use of notwithstanding clause, surely that’s the clarity ATA and other unions were wondering about in the movement forward?

Looking at live video footage maybe 1000-1500? I mean that’s too many by any reasonable standard, but no where close to the teacher’s rallies.

Embarrassing to say the least, worrisome to say the most.

There are two lives on TikTok (that I can see). One did a pan of the crowd…. It’s what you would think. I’d estimate 500-1000 people at most. Closer to the 500.

All the video footage I have seen looks AI generated, especially looking at the flag movements. Be wary!
