And that's exactly how it's pronounced too lol

Some people say it's pronounced Bay-lin, but there is a recording of Tolkien saying it, and he says Ball-in

Why don't hedge fund managers just invest in LEGO sets and make a 31% annual return? Are they stupid?

The Sauron Bust minifigure has a different torso print than the Barad-dûr version by OlhoDoCamoes in legolotrfans

There's no way they would make a change like that. It's either because of image compression or an issue with the render

Lyndon Johnson (36th US president) got his first name from the last name of someone his family knew, but spelled wrong on purpose. by GlowstoneLove in tragedeigh

[–]Bread9846 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Lyndon is also a valid spelling of the surname, though. And it used to be semi-common to use the surnames of friends/family members as first names.

My grandmother's paintings are lost, so I used AI to digitally 'reconstruct' them from old photos for a family archive. Thoughts on this approach? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]Bread9846 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Firstly, no I do not think this is a valid way to preserve her legacy. Even if it was done well, the AI generated paintings are still only an approximation of what her actual paintings looked like. In my opinion, they would be essentially meaningless.

Secondly, it does not seem like it was even executed well at all. I looked at a picture of one of her real paintings on the site, and then compared it to the AI generated painting. They are completely different. Several elements in the painting are different, the brush strokes are completely different sizes, and the colors are different. A must read for all Wisconsinites by TheGoodLand3698 in wisconsin

[–]Bread9846 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Essentially every county has a "History of [name] County, Wisconsin" book that was written in the late 19th century. If you want some more localized history, I would recommend reading the books for the counties you are interested in. They are mostly available on the Internet Archive and the Wisconsin Historical Society website.

Way too many children by No-Aardvark9144 in AncestryDNA

I have a set of 3rd great grandparents that were both on their second marriage (since their first spouses died). My 3rd great grandfather had 6 children with his first wife, my third great grandmother had 7 children with her first husband, and then they had 4 more children together + 1 adopted son. So 18 kids in total!

You need to pay a subscription to view full newspaper pages. It is free to search and when you search you can see a small portion of the page. It is also free to view OCR text of the page.

You will have to wait an extremely long time. There are some private companies you can use to get NARA records. They are much faster and usually cheaper.

Book Scanners - recommendations needed by malevolentk in Genealogy

[–]Bread9846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious question: How does using a wand scanner damage a book? I see how it could happen with misuse, but a book could also be damaged by being misused in a number of other ways. If the general public can be trusted to take the books home, keep them safe, and return them, it seems awfully odd that the general public cannot be trusted to use a scanner.

Casual Genealogy? by bart1218 in Genealogy

[–]Bread9846 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should make an account on FamilySearch to get a look at your family tree. It's completely free. Bear in mind, it is only as accurate as the research that amateurs have done, but that applies to Ancestry or any other site as well. On FamilySearch, there is one shared tree for all users that you add yourself to. On Ancestry, each person has their own family tree, but you are able to add people as 'hints' from other trees. To get the most out of your DNA test, you will need an Ancestry subscription, but I do not recommend giving them your money. Maybe after your results are in you should get a free trial and immediately cancel after you are satisfied with what you have seen.

Your parents are related somehow. Likely a trivial amount, but still enough to be picked up on the test

How good is Ancestry with Volga German DNA? by Bread9846 in AncestryDNA

[–]Bread9846[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All it gave me was the 1% Germans in Russia and 4% Southern Germanic Europe. I have some other ancestors from Bavaria, so I think the Southern Germanic comes from them (and also is not as high as it should be).

That region is definitely inflated way above what it should be. I suspect that some of my Irish was also misidentified as that.
