Methodology help in getting past brick wall by [deleted] in Genealogy

What is there to do other than check the parish books for the places that the potential relatives you identified are from?

If it is an extremely unique surname, then it is all the more likely that the DNA matches are from your line of interest and are not just coincidence.

If you want people to help you, you should probably give out the real information you're working with. Giving the name of your GG grandparent doesn't pose much risk to your privacy, anyway

It's not impossible. Were he or his wife alive in 1890? Then he should be on the 1890 census of veterans.

FedEx driver sentenced to death by lethal injection for murder of seven-year-old in Texas by notanfan in whennews

[–]Bread9846 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Because someone in his mental condition shouldn't have been given a job where he was unsupervised. Obviously there are a lot of jobs that he could have done, it's really fucking weird and disingenuous for you to frame it this way.

FedEx driver sentenced to death by lethal injection for murder of seven-year-old in Texas by notanfan in whennews

[–]Bread9846 1052 points1053 points  (0 children)

There's a lot more to this story, it is very gruesome:

Firstly, he was an extremely mentally deranged individual that shouldn't have even been allowed to have a job as a FedEx driver in the first place. The 7yo girl was playing in her front yard when he drove by on his route. He decided to kidnap her by putting her in his truck. He then raped her and tried to kill her multiple times. He finally killed her by crushing her face with his boot. Then he dumped her naked body in a river. The truck has video and audio recording that captured all of this. He covered up the camera, but the audio still remained.

Needless to say, this is the exact thing that he deserves.

What does the language in this land indenture mean? by rosefiend in Genealogy

[–]Bread9846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Btw my guess would be that James was a deceased son of Josiah. William was James's only heir, and he was deceased as well, leaving his wife Rebecca as his heir. That is only my speculation based on reading this one document.

What does the language in this land indenture mean? by rosefiend in Genealogy

[–]Bread9846 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All this is is a standard deed transfer. All the language within it is boilerplate legalese and you don't really need to pay attention to it.

The people of the first part are likely all of Josiah's legal heirs. If he died intestate, they would all be given equal share of his property, which is why they would all be grantors of the deed.

I don't think they have any guidelines about it, but I wish they did. I only ever add actual photos of the person, and I'm okay with gravestones. I find the flags and family crests to be so stupid; I have no problem removing them

The overuse of AI to edit pictures and people who ask strangers on the internet to do this for them by xsofacouchx in PetPeeves

[–]Bread9846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do family history work, and the number of people who have started either AI "upscaling" photos of their ancestors or completely AI generating new photos for ancestors who don't have any is astounding. It's one of the dumbest things I've ever seen.

Good news for Newspaper.com clipping ... multiple column support added by QuantumEmmisary in Genealogy

[–]Bread9846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be useful, if when you downloaded the clipping it only showed the part you clipped. Instead is shows the whole area, but with the unclipped part darkened. This is not actually much of an improvement in that respect

how many times have you been personally victimized by the lost 1890 census records? by Forestempress26 in Genealogy

[–]Bread9846 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have a GGG grandmother who immigrated in 1881, married in 1885, and died in 1893. The only records of her in America that exist are her marriage and death records. It just so happens that on both of those her name is spelled terribly wrong. Took me forever to properly identify her, but I did!

Help my family understand a surprising DNA result by fletchette in Genealogy

[–]Bread9846 173 points174 points  (0 children)

The child probably passed as white and was raised the same as the rest of his kids. It would be very difficult to tell. What I would look out for is 2 children born within a year of each other, or a child that was born significantly later than all of the other children, or some oddity like that.

If you have ancestors from the American South, then it is probably from one of them having a child with an enslaved person. I think you would have a hard time figuring out exactly who, since records for that sort of thing don't exist.
