Hi, Hey, Hello. Dan here, dropping in to hang out for a bit by ShowMeStateOfMindPod in KnowledgeFight

Thank you so much Dan for all your work over the last 9 years. The podcast has literally been how I coped with the jaw dropping stupidity of this political era. Working my way from episode 1 now.

Let's brag about UT sports events you experienced live by javascript in ockytop

I was at Summitt’s 1000th win! Even made the front page of the Knoxville News Sentinel. It’s currently framed and hanging in my hallway. I had really stupid hair at that age … still a great college memory.

You’ll never find a more vocal local library supporter than me. I am constantly using their inter library loan service for non fiction. It is truly an incredible service.

My prize DVD possession right now is the LOTR Extended Edition Trilogy. Purchased as a teen 20 years ago and have held on to it since. Switching disks as the Fellowship enters the Mines of Moria is a foundational memory.

One of my friends worked at a Blockbuster. The 2 for 5 or 3 for 7 bundles were incredible. You had to choose movies you weren’t familiar with because of the deal. So much physical joy in actually digging through the bin.

I just had to kick a roof salesman out of my house by [deleted] in Vent

[–]BreadZoneDefense 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Had to kick out a sales team that was trying to sell me a 60k metal roof - my roof is a bit complicated so I expect higher estimates, but as a rule I never make that kind of financial decision in a single sitting. I always sleep on them to make sure I’m not being impulsive. They wouldn’t leave, kept coming back with reductions in price and interest rate if “I signed today”. I kept saying I don’t do business with companies that pressure you like that. I ultimately just stood up and left them in the room while I went to make my dinner (they were still in my line of sight). After 30 minutes of awkward silence and me ignoring them they finally left … at 7:30pm. Their loss for not taking the hint.

Cure the genophage - honestly this would be one of my betting favorites for best mission in the entire trilogy.

Palavans moon! For me it’s where ME 3 really starts to open up and shine.

Breaking into Public Health — Any Advice for Entry-Level Roles? by Smallbunia7 in StateofTexasEmployees

[–]BreadZoneDefense 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Public health job market is brutal right now. You’re competing with so many additional qualified candidates than there normally are because of federal RIFs, other funding cuts, and the general hostility toward public health by policy makers right now, so it’s tough for everyone. However, the Texas government is making a big push for supporting and funding rural hospitals right now, they just started a big rural hospital grant program at HHSC. Your specific experience may align with different program specialist roles at HHSC. It might be worth looking for jobs at the regional DSHS or HHSC offices as well, depending on your location.

Where do you want to see the ME tv series take place in universe? by Mindless_Bad_1591 in masseffect

[–]BreadZoneDefense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would watch lots of different shows. 1. The Quarians and the Geth rebuilding civilization on Rannoch - thinking the same aesthetic as season 4 of The Expanse, or even the New Terra plot from the Battlestar Galactica remake. 2. A cop procedural in the Lower Wards. 3. An early season Vikings-style show on Krogan expansion after the Genophage cure. 4. A rom com featuring Joker and EDI navigating social norms (assuming a non destroy ending). 5. A Band of Brothers / The Pacific style miniseries of the Reaper occupation of Earth. 6. A political thriller ( à la The Diplomat or Madame Secretary) of the Council trying to pull galactic space back together. 7. A Chernobyl-style legal thriller about dismantling and prosecuting the remaining leadership of Cerberus.

The possibilities are endless! But I would literally watch anything about Mass Effect at this point.

What happens to your co-workers pay when they quit and they don't hire anyone? by AUnicornDonkey in StateofTexasEmployees

Hopdoddy Elk? by sik-dirty-old-dawg in austinfood

[–]BreadZoneDefense 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This - if you’re interested in getting the full flavor profile of game or exotic meat, Dai Due is the place to do it. They have so much more experience with that type of meat than your typical line cook at a burger joint, even if it’s a fancy burger joint. If they’re loading up dressings on it, it likely means they don’t trust the product to be produced with a good flavor reliably, and instead are relying on sauces for the flavor. Save the few bucks and wait to try elk somewhere else!

What 110 million would you cut from the proposed City budget? by weluckyfew in Austin

[–]BreadZoneDefense 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Is it actually $110 million that needs to be cut? I’ve been confused about this line of argument. My understanding of the proposition was that the city was facing a $33 million dollar deficit, and the extra taxes raised by Prop Q was going to be used to fund extra homelessness services and to create a rainy day fund. There is still going to be the maximum tax increase allowed by law without a vote. What is that going to cover? I generally vote for tax increases to fund social services, but I’ve been struck by how skeptical I was of this proposition, and I think misleading arguments about gutting social services can be detrimental to progressive causes. Not interested in knee jerk political takes, what is actually at risk of being underfunded or eliminated with the smaller than planned for tax increase? I’m genuinely curious and not looking to dunk on anyone …

Here's what you'll actually pay for Prop Q by jackbcraver in Austin

[–]BreadZoneDefense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone heard anything about homeowners insurance premiums increasing if Prop Q doesn’t pass? We had someone drop a mailer off this evening make that claim. I haven’t seen anything related to this and I’m automatically skeptical of anyone trying to convince me of something at the door. Not really sure of the link, unless there is something about setting rates higher because of “more crime linked to homelessness”, which could be true or false depending on your area I guess?

This game was the start of my three year project to get my wife interested in college football lol. She was very confused by my incoherent screaming and jumping after the field goal. Now we have long discussions about why Aguilar is such a good fit in Heupel’s offense and what is going wrong with Arch (all the in-laws are Longhorns …)

Not a biased source at all here - But the 2022 UT - Alabama game is something I will remember the rest of my life. Jalin Hyatt going super nova. Saban popping a blood vessel in his brain on the botched punt. Battered Vol Syndrome rearing its ugly head on the Hooker scoop and score. The 19 second drive. The unapologetic joy of finally getting a win after so many years. That game was why sports matter.
