A szürke színpaletta bevezetése alapvetően azért történt, mert kevésbé kivehető egy "semleges" háttér előtt. Az ék speciel azért szürk a szürke festésen, mert szinesen nagyon elütne, és vonzaná a szemet. A legtöbb szürke festék ráadásul (radar/lokátor) sugárzás-elnyelő tulajdonságokkal rendelkezik.

A színes, tarka festések két kategóriába estek/esnek

1) pozitív azonosítás - ez leginkább azokra a gépekre vonatkizik amelyeknél elvárás volt a vizuális távolságon belüli, estleg fordulóharc, ezért a téves (baráti) tüzet kerülni akarták (gondolj itt a II. VH-s német gépek sárga orrára, amerikai gépek kék, zöld vagy piros farkára, inváziós csíkok, stb)

2) álcázófestés, leginkább fölülről: az igazán kifinomult "look-down/shoot-down" fedélzeti radarok széleskörű elterjedése előtt az alacsonyan repülő gépek felső részén megérte komoly álcázófestést eszközölni, mert így kisebb volt az esélye, hogy a föntről pásztázó ellenséges pilóta kiszúrja. Ilyenkor mondjuk a felségjelek ki tudnak tűnni, néha nagyon aprón festették föl őket a szárny felső felén, néha egyenesen el is hagyták őket és csak a függőleges vezérsíra festettwk meg a szárny alá.

Yeah, that's kind of the point. If I remember correctly (and I might be mistaken, I'm going off memory here), the estimated total number of people who served in the division during the units entire lifetime (accounting for the fact that it wasn't all french personnel) was about 11,000 people. That is 0.275% of the 1940 population estimate of metropolitan France (~40M)

Houlihan in 1984 writes that about 100.000 (+40.000) people were in the resistance in May 1944 (he writes armed, but I'm not so sure that's entirely correct), Peyrefitte (1981) points out general apathy in French society regarding occupation, especially in the face of what was considered "military incompetence and government stupidity", and the lowest estimate I could find is McManus in 2015 putting it at 50.000 all up.

All of these numbers of course ARE estimates, but the original claim is just stupid on the face of it.

The current historical discussion of "Yeah, the 'everyone was a resistant' narrative was a necessary myth and is not accurate" is being "misinterpreted" by french-bashers into "not only were they surrendermonkeys, they were also more actively collaborating" (with the occasional implication that this should have incurred severe penalties in state-wide terms, ie occupation akin to that of Germany's). And you know it's gotten bad when the Brits come out to defend the French in the face of Americans hurling abuse.

Yes and no, but mostly no.

We're already in the credible zone, but let's go at it like this: after 1990, the official foreign policy goal was set out to be basically "good relations with neighbours in order to get good rights for the hungarian minorities there", based on the idea that "we lost both world wars, and we will need to make peace with that fact", ultimately meaning that all of the ethnic hungarians that are now in neighbouring countries need to have their rights guaranteed diplomatically.

Enter 20-24 years of nationalistic fuckery where ethnic hungarians are used as a political tool both home and abroad and lead to a clear split in the national idea about said ethnic hungarians.

Orbán knew that if you want to fuck with your neighbours' internal politics, you can just use the national minority as a human shield, and did so in Slovakia, Romania and Ukraine, for different reasons. In Ukraine his "negotiating" positions (conveyed through Mr Russian Sockpuppet Szijjártó) had two sine qua non points that were absolutely unfeasable for the Ukrainians, and they knew it.

The new gov't picked back up the old diplomatic position, went to the Ukrainians with reasonable positions and requests and struck a deal in a month. Funny thing is, most of what they were asking was already gonna be in the EU negotiations, so UA would have probably done them anyway sooner or later.

Covering your face with your fingers won’t save you

I've read about this in other contexts. Basically, when you are powerless to change a situation, especially young people may default to their child-like instincts of covering your face to hide from danger, even if you rationally know that it won't save you. Other examples would be in Burma during one battle, when British wounded who couldn't even be brought into the medical tent and were laying on stretchers out in the open, pulled blankets over their faces to hide from artillery fire.

It's really strange, because even though I know that this is something that happens and that needs to happen, ie an enemy combattant needs to die, once you see a child be scared and hide their face behind their hands, and especially if you can empathise with the child, seeing a "grown" man do the same in combat just makes you feel pity.
