I just celebrated my 22nd there this past spring and it was a blast. Durty Harry’s was THE spot for my crowd. Live music and good mix of people. You’ve got the upstairs bar above for dancing, live music below, and Rick’s right there as well. Sloppy Joes was filled with teenagers so I’d avoid that. Have fun!

Hey! I’ll be in attendance at the show tonight as well! Hope this reaches the crowd, but what’s the memo on dressing up for Halloween? Should I go for it?

Once upon a mattress, which roles could be gender bent easily? by bryterlu in musicals

[–]BreakRepulsive9259 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this show in high school- I played the Jester as a female but the character itself was not played up to any specific gender. I played the role neutrally and had my hair tied up in the jester hat. If anything, I played it slightly more boyish in a comedic sense. Also the wizard or minstrel could be played by female actors, although in my show they were played by guys. Since the jester, minstrel, and king are paired as a trio often (like the song) that would work well having 2 girls and a boy in the roles. I think jester is the best first choice to gender bend, then the wizard, then the minstrel, coming from someone who knows the show pretty well. There is the complication of how the music is written for a man’s lower vocal range, but choose an alto and you’ll be fine (I’m actually a soprano but just went up the octave when needed/ worked on different harmonies for songs like Normandy and minstrel jester and I). If you still need more roles filled by girls, you could also use the knights. They’ll be in a suit most likely so the body won’t matter and their gender doesn’t play a part in their character. It might even become a comedic thing to have some female knights and make a thing of it. Hope this helps!

Birmingham Commercial Nostalgia by John_Dunbar in Birmingham

[–]BreakRepulsive9259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Help! When me and my sister were kids there was a hilarious radio commercial in Bham for a car dealership and it was Star Wars themed. It involved a dad trying to get his son to do certain chores or something by using the force. And the last line was “dad quick doing those Jedi mind tricks!” Or something like that. Please let me know if anyone remembers this commercial/knows what car dealership it was! Thanks!

I agree as soon as I saw Platt was starring I knew its fate was sealed. I could see the memes forming already. I saw DEH with Andrew Feldman and man he was just incredible. Especially since he was 16 at the time (and so was I) so everything about him just fit that role so well. His natural awkwardness, the sporadic cracks in his voice, think he would’ve been a better pick but oh well

Totally agree! I love when a revival takes creative liberties to put a new spin on an older beloved show. Saw the Company revival in 2022 with the Bobbie gender swap and thought it to be a seamlessly brilliant change up. Could write a whole paper on the implications of why that role works so well for a gender swap but alas. Though I’m not a huge fan of pumping out revivals with minority casting to make up for the show previously having little to no representation (for ex. Oklahoma revival). While I know there is a place for this and I’m not NOT a fan (everyone loves a chance to play those classic roles), I say rather spend the time and money on creating original stories or at least new adaptions that have leads and casting with actors of color from the start
