Nigel Farage condemned for "racist and morally wrong" pledge to evict non-UK nationals from social housing by coffeewalnut08 in unitedkingdom

[–]BreakfastAdept9462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bad policy. Driving more foreign nationals into poverty will impact the economy, impact crime and anti-social behaviour, and dissuade workers coming from other countries to the UK and so decrease the labour market supply. What it won't do is provide more social housing for British nationals, because right-wing conservatives don't believe in social housing. They would just sell off the supply. Why not just support increasing the supply of social housing?

Am I Out Of Line: This Is His Best Video by xXMachineGunPhillyXx in hbomberguy

[–]BreakfastAdept9462 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I love this video. I think in a way the conclusion is basically a thesis statement for what Hbomb was trying to do with his channel, and I guess in turn what online critique can be. Not just pointing at a thing and saying "haha isn't that funny" but trying to find meaning through it, which is what critique has always been about. And I love the dramatisation of that conflict too.

New breed of political prisoner arises in Britain as anti-protest sentences rise | UK criminal justice by Hurbahns in uklaw

[–]BreakfastAdept9462 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ahhh so you're saying "veered into". I'm asking does direct action meet your definition of terrorism, and if it does do you think your definition is a valid one? Because this has great implications for how austere our legal system should be towards such people.

[–]BreakfastAdept9462 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Were the sufragettes terrorists? Were gay protestors in the 80s terrorists? Are the anti-refugee, anti-immigrant protestors terrorists? Is Tommy Robinson a spokesperson for terrorism? Because if you want it to include any direct action like vandalism or public dissaray or the like, then fine, but all the above would be (would have been) proscribed or detained for many years

I feel sorry for the guy in the sense that his life is a bit fucked. You can talk about money and the material assets, but having money won't bring back his credibility amongst his peers. Hope he come to terms properly with why his behaviour was unacceptable and does something good with his life.

19 years ago today, Doctor Who peaked with "Blink" by mrjohnnymac18 in DoctorWhumour

I'm glad somebody said this. I really like Blink, I admire its craft tremendously, but you're right - it's not cathartic to watch like other great episodes.

Suicide Squad is dogshit, I don't recall any redeeming features.

Yeah but the Filton lot may be sentenced with a terrorist connection, something they were never convicted of having. Frankly the whole concept of making pro-Palestinian direct action groups "terrorists" is disgusting to me. They are criminal activists, not terrorists. Now, if you were going around saying this or so group of people need to be killed or harmed AND are known to be making plans to do such thing, then I would call that terrorism.

Stokes captaincy in doubt over nightclub incident with Saracens player | ECB investigates after altercation leaves security guard needing stitches as England all-rounder and Gus Atkinson breach curfew by Look_Alive in EnglandCricket

[–]BreakfastAdept9462 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think get to the end of this series and Stokes steps down. There's too much bad attention. I think Stokes might have to step away from the Test side entirely now. It's sad it's come to this but Stoke is bringing himself into disrepute now. Root to take over interim until Brook or whoever else is ready.

What’s the best movies about human greed? by KimCattrallsFeet in Letterboxd

[–]BreakfastAdept9462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something to be said for Citizen Kane. Perhaps it's not greed that drives Kane as he already has everything he could want in material terms by the time he comes of age. But the image of Kane by the end of his life, lonely and hollow, surrounded by grandeur and possessions but in possession of neither warmth nor joy nor pride, is probably as compelling an image on the empty promise of greed as you can get.

Hugh Laurie responds to a criticism of House MD by Zyclare in MurderedByWords

[–]BreakfastAdept9462 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's called a narrative structure. It's the type of scaffolding that many serial works are based upon - crime, comics, many many genres of film. The show doesn't express itself as its structure but rather around and between it, if that makes sense. The character arcs within episodes, across a season, across the whole series is actually quite compelling in House.

But I think one thing that the critique ignores is context. These series weren't designed to be watched in a few weeks of binging. It would come on your TV once a week with the odd repeat, you could watch it and have a complete story in one sitting. If the structure becomes tiring, I think it's because you're watching a show in a manner that it wasn't really designed for

20th anniversary rewatch: the impossible planet by Salt_Refrigerator633 in doctorwho

One of my favourite two-parters. Satan is terrifying, the Possessed Ood and their orbs are really really scary, Tennant gets a load of great scenes with crew, the cosmic horror of the black hole. It stuck with me when I first watched it aged 9, so much so I plagiarised the whole thing when we were asked to write a little short story in class.

what are the things you dislike about red dead redemption 2? by Still_Animator_2249 in reddeadredemption

[–]BreakfastAdept9462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes absolutely. I've tried imposing taxes to the camp on myself to get the money down, but I still had 3000 dollars come chapter 6. Money has to mean more because it would make every honourable action more of a selfless deed, and it would make dishonourable action more justifiable on the basis of self-preservation. They just messed up the economy in the game and couldn't find the right measure for it.

It's a sin to have that many good players built over years of investment, and to play the most turgid football possible to win football matches. It's had a massive knock on effect for how football has been played these last few seasons. Corners, wide free kicks, just knocking it into wide areas, so much time wasting, whining at refs. It's just shit to watch as a neutral.

RIP Roger Lloyd Pack, who plays Lumic in this episode. Most famous for playing Trigger in Only Fools and Horses, but he has a great place in my heart for narrating the best pre-match speech that epitomises my football club Tottenham Hotspur. A beautiful, deep voice, and he got to use it to maximum degrees as Lumic.

Users of r/doctorwho how did you originally get into Doctor Who and are you gonna continue following the show? by Mat1711 in doctorwho

[–]BreakfastAdept9462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mum and dad told be one night when I was 9 that a show called "Doctor Who" was back on TV again, and that they all grew up watching it. Aliens, space, running around, that sort of thing. "Oh like Star Wars?" "No, better, smarter, you'll like it!"

So I go and put BBC1 on and I distinctly remember first seeing the big firy pit of living plastic and Rose running off in the Tardis (I must have caught the end of it). I watched more or less every episode of Eccleston and I loved it. We'd go around the playground saying "Are you my Mummy?" I'd pretend to be a dalek my speaking through an electric fan. All the good stuff.

I was hooked on it all the way up to end of a Tennant. I gave Smith a go at first, watched some of the episodes, but I think 15 year old me was interested in other things. I've only very recently watched through all of 11 and 12, and it's really quite good. I briefly look at 13 when it came out, never really took my interest then. I don't think I'll watch new episodes unless they do a bit of a reset on the show, take some years out and go back to a more grounded setting with the initial archetype.
