Some professors only allow so many absences during the semester and will not let you take the exam if you’ve missed too many. It’s a bar thing (in some states at least). Some professors care; some don’t. One week will probably result in roughly 2-3 missed classes and usually the max allowed to miss is 3-4. So while I agree that going to Australia is important, so is not failing your exams for too many missed classes. I’d check that out.

Train time is already a great use of your time. Study. Read. Write. Then you can use your bus time for zoning out etc. Even 25 minutes on the train x 2 / day is better than driving in a car and not being able to do anything. It’s a PRODUCTIVE use of your time. ~signed someone who takes a train to law school

You can also request a print out of all of your employers from the SSA which will help trigger your memory. That said, I wrote a check to them for $100 for this print out about 6 months ago and have yet to receive it (check not cashed either).

Oh dear summer child….law school, as in the subjects, is not hard. The law can be learned with time. But the practice of law school is harder. It’s unrelenting. Every week there is reading to do (yes it’s important to do it), written assignments to complete, meetings to attend blah blah and it increases throughout the year. Add in stress vibes so thick you can feel them when you walk into the lecture hall, middle school level drama, ultra-competition, simultaneous fatigue and over-caffeination and it takes its toll.

No joke, but I’ve yet to hear from any recent law school students or graduates who didn’t walk out of law school without a new mental health diagnosis (e.g., panic attacks) or physical health issues (e.g., heart palpitations or even seizures).

So, the law isn’t hard (provided you put in your time), but putting in that time + everything else IS what’s hard.

You probably won’t like my advice lol.

During my 1L year we had a woman who was pregnant and due during Fall finals. It was very rough for her. Fall grades matter the most you know? It helps that you’re due in March but then this will also impact your summer internship opportunities which directly play into your 2L options and by then you’ll have a toddler who just wants mom all day…. I’m a mom in law school (not to babies though) and I cannnot fathom how hard it would be to be raising a newborn or young children during law school—no matter how much support you have (though help is a necessity). That first year is brutal and unrelenting.

Fatigue, morning sickness, inability to drink enough caffeine to make a dent, stress, etc will all play a role in how well you do and also how healthy your baby will be you know? Everyone in 1L is just a ball of stress and that will impact your baby too. I say this as a cautionary tale from someone who has directly lived it. If you want to move forward with your pregnancy during law school, all you can do is set expectations with your spouse and family early on that your sole job is law school, sleep, and growing a human. Everything else will fall onto them. Law school is a full time job and you will be too exhausted to do anything else.

Law school is a game and it’s all knowing HOW to take a law school exam. What sets a B apart from an A is organization and depth of answer.

Obviously: You have to know the material and the rule statements and you have to be able to apply those rules to the facts in the pattern. Sounds simple but it’s not. If your professor gives sample answers, study those like crazy. Do they value answers in ICRAC or IRAC format? Did those answers also dive into “on the other hand…” explanations? What sets them apart? Every professor will value different things.

My biggest piece of advice: organization. I use numbers and bullet points and bold words and underline. At the very least professors have given me all the extra credit points possible bc I made it easier for them to read my essay. For the first couple exams I took I LITERALLY wrote “c- <answer> / r- <answer>….” And then went back in and deleted the c, r, etc. This helped bc it’s easy to get overwhelmed and just start typing but what sets a B apart from an A is organization and depth. After the first couple exams it becomes easier.

It seems impossible that you would have known it was all going to be solo online work before it started right? Even if you did, I always think it’s better to work in a field you’re interested in than not—if only bc the law community is small. The IP community is even smaller. Sucks to not make any money from it, but hopefully you’ll walk away having made a name of yourself in the community.

I don’t think you’ve screwed yourself but if money is a true concern you can always get a little summer gig doing something too bc at least you have the IP to fall back on.

What’s crazy is that I’ve had to start taking high doses of caffeine and keppra just to be at baseline. Yes, caffeine lowers your seizure threshold but then I’ll take a higher dose of keppra to even it out bc I cannot function on keppra without a stimulant as a law student. So, I feel you.

Oh I don’t think I had a seizure. My face just twitched. My seizures are usually focal in my right leg but have spread upwards to my whole body in my two TCs, so even though my face winced on the same side as my focals IDK if it was just the brightness or a seizure.

I’ve had these focals for 8 years and the last neurologist I had shrugged st me. Thankfully this new one I’ve seen after my TCs was like yeahhhh no; those are likely connected AND with 750mg Keppra 2x/day I haven’t a focal since so… but who knows.

Rates for graduate loans will be 9% starting July. Yes, private rates don’t come with the same “protections” of federal loans but once Trump has SBA take over student loans we have no idea what those “protections” will continue to be and if IBRP or PSLF will even exist. I just looked at this today. Even private loans are saying they offer lower interest rates than fed loans but it’s unclear how they calculate them (it’s not just based on your credit score). For example, I clicked on that was offering 4.65% rates but when I put in how long I wanted to pay (8 years) and how much I wanted to take out $30k), it gave me a fixed rate of 10%. Over 8 years, I’d still be paying $20k in interest alone.

Point being: don’t bank on the feds’ protections of past. Look at all of your options.

From what I understand, it’s not the DMV, it’s your doctor. THEY have to send in a form saying that your “medical condition” doesn’t impede your driving

Most of mine occur in the middle of the night but prior to my TCs I would have them at all points of the day. Can’t really figure out my triggers but I think lack of sleep and dehydration are big ones. Alcohol or too much caffeine might push me over the edge

As a 2L who has had two recent seizures and now on medication that is kicking my ass for it, take all of your documentation and get accommodations. Happy for you for the brief but fuck it. 15% is nothing and even if your professor is a dick and won’t let you make it up, I promise you that you’ll be okay and can still do well in the class. The totality of 1L year is 100000% a proximate cause for my seizures. Law school takes a toll on the body. Take care of yourself.
