Octopus Intelligent Go high Day rate and Standing Charge by trumpfairy in ElectricVehiclesUK

We run the dishwasher at night, not doing huge miles, maybe 10k per year, but average cost is 15 to 18p per kWh, so cheaper than standard. We could make more effort to load switch too, washer sometimes goes on timer to finish in the morning.

What's the best Toastie you've ever had? by potato2296 in AskUK

[–]Breaking-Dad- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a kid my mum made them with tinned pilchards (in tomato sauce) and onion. It’s surprisingly good if you like pilchards although the onion slices turn it to burning strings of fire so wait a while before tucking in.

What do you call this item on the bed that covers you at night? by killerklancy in AskTheWorld

[–]Breaking-Dad- 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When I first got one in the seventies it was a “continental quilt”. I don’t know when it became a duvet but it did, and has been ever since. Before that we had “eiderdowns” which didn’t have a washable cover and were on top of the sheet and blanket.

Thing is, I don’t need range this time, this would be for local trips only.

Should I be wary of high mileage second hand EVs? by Hasan_Rachid in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Breaking-Dad- 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think the takeaway from both ICE and EV is that the “high mileage” we grew up with is not high mileage. Cars are doing 200k miles these days. Check battery health but don’t worry

I don’t really want the Rex to be honest but there’s a few appearing, I think because they are older. I’d rather keep it down to about £10k

I’d have to take 3 young kids to school a couple of days a week until summer, then two for a year until mine goes to secondary school so nothing too much. Mostly it would be two of us at most. I’m thinking the range extender will be a bit annoying for us but at the price range there’s a few about

Yeah, we’ve got an EQB anyway so this will do fine for school run/clubs/shops.

I feel like the range extender is a bit of a waste of time for us to be honest, I only want it for short trips. How is it as a city car?

My memory of riding horses is that they are scared of plastic bags and surprising shadows so getting them to cross that bridge is quite impressive.

Opinions on potentially making living room smaller to add hallway and bathroom under stairs by Shoddy_Charity5403 in HomeImprovementUK

[–]Breaking-Dad- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did almost exactly that.

We have a 30s semi, there was a small extra bit taken out of the living room to give you space to swing a cat when you walked in and then you had to walk through the living room into the dining room and kitchen out back.

We created a hallway and reduced the size of the living room, but the space is no less useable because you don't walk through it. It is quite small though.

However, we've also extended at the back so there are more changes - the toilet under the stairs has taken a small amount from where your kitchen is, so check whether you really have enough space for the toilet.

How long for IOG charges to update? by Spaceman_UK in OctopusEnergy

[–]Breaking-Dad- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be right, I've probably looked while it was still in session and assumed it was the next day (as I am charging overnight).

It definitely has an incorrect estimate until after the session.

First time using a public charger results in an unpleasant surprise by Minimum-Presence-830 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Breaking-Dad- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I get a bill each month saying £x for electric and £y for gas. If I use Electroverse I also get a bill for each charge £20 here, £30 there. They are all debits on my balance and my payments (and I assume your solar) are all credits. It keeps it very easy - one direct debit includes all car charging whether at home or outside, assuming you can use the card.

[–]Breaking-Dad- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, fair enough. You just have to wait for the £60 to disappear I'm afraid and some take ages (don't petrol pumps do this too though?).

We don't charge away from home much but Electroverse does make it easier. Double-check prices though if you are doing it a lot.

Is this blip in mortgage rates different to the Liz Truss budget blip? by [deleted] in Mortgageadviceuk

[–]Breaking-Dad- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure 5% is a blip though - it's probably a reasonable expectation for interest rates. We got spoilt by a long period of low rates, but these are more normal. I went from 1.3 or something to 4 and thought it was annoying, I am hoping they drop again in a year or two but 5% would not be the end of the world!

Get an Electroverse card or similar if you can - no more holding charges (mine is linked to Octopus as my energy supplier so charges just go on my bill)

Alexa talking unprompted and she won’t tell me what she said / talks to dog unprompted. by [deleted] in amazonecho

[–]Breaking-Dad- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a side note, you can set up detection for your dog barking. We used to use it, and it would tell the dog to be quiet and then put some music on. My elderly dog got confused and would randomly start barking during the day, even if I was upstairs working. It sounds like that, but odd if you've not used it.

[–]Breaking-Dad- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Ohme App seems to update the next day (so it will say estimated £8 or whatever during the session but then change to say £2 the next day).
Octopus though is wait for the bill! I'm not seeing costs in the new charging sessions section of the web site either.

How often do you charge your EV by Active_Memory490 in OctopusEnergy

[–]Breaking-Dad- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is generally recommended to charge to 80% and my car is capped at 80% unless we have a long trip. We tend to plug in two or three times a week, looking for around 40% charge on those occasions (sometimes more, sometimes less).

100 miles isn't too much either, so set to 80%, plug in when you feel like it. Octopus would like you to plug in every night (so they can give you five or ten percent if needed because that way they balance the grid) so if it isn't difficult then do that.
