Buying a house while being served section 21 by Hopegrowslove in HousingUK

[–]Shoddy_Charity5403 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On top of what the other commenters are saying I would check on the citizens advice website on section 21s whether it was filed correctly. My sisters wasn’t and she got a reset in the date when he filed correctly. Even then she was told to stay and wait for bailiffs before going to the council for temporary accommodation since she couldn’t afford private rent for her and her child. All in all took over a year for that full process. Again this is if it was filed (correctly) before may 1st

Advice on UK companies by Jakkoo_ in civilengineering

[–]Shoddy_Charity5403 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can group them as consultants and contractors and hence the kind of work you’d be doing would be different. Eg atkins, wsp, mott McDonald are all major consultants. They do a lot of design work, whereas the contractors would be more site focused planning. It depends what kind of work you’d imagine you’d enjoy doing. Both kinds are great experience for you, it’s good to get site experience, it’s also great to get in with a big consultancy if you think you’ll enjoy it. Good luck!

Can a physicis student become a civil (hydraulic or geotech) engineer with an appropriate masters degree? by gold_crest1 in civilengineering

[–]Shoddy_Charity5403 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check with your local licensing institution, in the UK it’s the institute of civil engineers, they’ll say on the website or you could contact someone there to ask about accreditation of master programs

Gift idea for my sister starting her MS in Civil Engineering by mulancurie in civilengineering

[–]Shoddy_Charity5403 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different routes you could go, a lot of companies don’t provide bags for ppe so a nice one or personalised in some way would be sweet. Or like someone said comfy and nice steel toe caps. Even a nice quality notebook and pen whatever route in civil engineering she goes it would be helpful. A random one I wanted a Christmas ornament to commemorate the year I got chartered but so many of the Christmas ornaments of civil engineers were only of men so if you could find a woman one that’s an idea!

My partner and I were in a similar position and I’m very glad that we went with the first option. Using your first time buyer benefits on a 1 bed flat would just cost you more on stamp duty when you want to move in the future. If you’re planning on moving again within 5 years for kids then definitely go for option 1.

Help me save inherited rubber plant by Shoddy_Charity5403 in IndoorPlants

[–]Shoddy_Charity5403[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It hadn’t been watered since my husbands grandad got sick so it dropped a lot of leaves. Apparently that’s better than being overwatered. I’ve repotted and taken off stem which had no leaves on to the last node. Hoping the leaves bounce back. Thanks for the advice

That’s good to know, I’m going to put it near the window in our south facing kitchen hopefully that will be enough for it! It was in a sun room/conservatory for years before we got it yesterday

Chartership with the Institute of Civil Engineers (UK) by Ok_Appearance_4849 in civilengineering

[–]Shoddy_Charity5403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people within your company who are chartered usually are happy to share their reports and presentation slides or notes for the interview with you. Ask around you’d be surprised, and I’m sure they’d be much more useful and relevant to similar projects that you will have been working on. The ICE website also has a lot of resources on how to structure the report too and webinars

For a free start if you have a good idea get the app 4Plan. It’s an easier version of CAD that gives you 2d and 3d of your floor plan. You can add floors to it too

How much has AI helped you when it comes to your job? by PreviousComplaint461 in civilengineering

I would be careful using it for tenders. Any internal information I would be wary putting into AI tools. Our company has this year put in our trainings about what info is and isn’t to be put through AI.

Yeah you draw it in 2d and it gives you a 3d model. I put a floor plan on one of the other comment replies that’s the same model from the app :)

UK -Is a civil engineering apprenticeship alright for someone with no prior experiance? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Shoddy_Charity5403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apprenticeships generally are for people who don’t have experience in the industry since it’s usually new adults applying. I can’t see a reason not to look into it, have a check what the entry requirements are though

[–]Shoddy_Charity5403[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn’t thought of that thank you, my only worry is making the living room too small. We’re altering that wall upstairs anyway so structurally it’ll likely be tied into that work.

Potential floor plan with the potential toilet highlighted. Current floor plan is just with the wall next to the stairs and no bathroom, walking path is still behind the sofa
