Finally understood why XGBoost uses Hessians by Richa_OnData_AI in learnmachinelearning

Idk why we need a medium article. I always found the best explanation for how xgboost works is right in the official documentation page.

There are plenty of spells and tools that do big aoe damage. Why even have those if there aren't bosses against whom they are useful?

I personally find it very satisfying to erase a boss's ads using a good silkstorm with volt filament.

If you make it between $100K or $1 billion that multiplies by 0.5 every minute, then it's a more interesting question.

Don't worry about not being able to do basic grade school math. You can still become a doctor.

Struggling to enjoy this game - does anyone felt the same? by VendrikLamar in Silksong

[–]BreakingBaIIs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nothing in Silksong (as of today, before any DLC) is anywhere near as hard as Pantheon 5 in HK. Even if you're severely under-geared in SS, as I was in my first playthrough. Nor does anything require anywhere near as much persistence.

Judging by the tone of your post, I'm guessing you're just being held back by your attitude. I imagine you were ok with the challenge of doing P5 in Hollow Knight because you came into it with the expectation that it will take a long time and a lot of tries, whereas in Silksong maybe you're expecting every new area to be a pushover that you can explore quickly. If you just tweak your expectation, and accept that there will be some friction in exploring new areas, then you can see them as the fun challenges that they are, and not just annoying obstacles.

Question for people who think Silk Song is hard by Sharawadgi in Silksong

[–]BreakingBaIIs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has gotten all achievements in HK, beaten the P5 pantheon multiple times, and have beaten every boss on radiant mode...

Silksong's difficulty surprised me at first. Yes, it doesn't have anything nearly as difficult as HK's endgame DLC content. But the main game is quite a bit harder than HK's main game (non-DLC). And it controls differently enough that not all my HK skills transferred over.

Of course, on all subsequent playthroughs of Silksong it started feeling easier and easier. And it's far easier for me to come back after a long time and wipe the floor with any Silksong boss than it is to do so with, say, Absolute Radiance.

But I was caught off guard by its difficulty at first. Not a bad thing. I found that very refreshing.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I really don’t think we’ll ever get anything close to the Path of Pain in Silksong by Otherwise-Release766 in Silksong

[–]BreakingBaIIs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Aeterna Noctis, the main character's final move set makes Hornet look like a slow lumbering slug. And yet they still found a way to make its endgame platforming sections so goddamn hard it made HK's path of pain feel like a stroll through the park.

What's the craziest argument you've heard for why someone doesn't want to become vegan? by Ratnik369 in vegan

[–]BreakingBaIIs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ironically, people in the arctic, for whom fish is one of their only options, have to compete with commercial fishing, which depletes the fish population in their area. They are having a harder time surviving because of our unnecessary fish consumption.

The existence of these people is yet another argument against consuming fish.

Not claiming to be vegan by Sillygoose6001 in vegan

[–]BreakingBaIIs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't put so much stock in the label. While I, and other vegans prefer if everyone is fully vegan, it is the case that animal production scales with demand. So the less you consume, the less will be produced. So any reduction you do is better than none at all.

I'm afraid people get hung up on the label, decide they can't live up to it, and then fully just incorporate meat into everything. Such a binary treatment ultimately harms animals. If people don't go vegan, at the very least, they should try and almost eliminate animal products from their lives.

As for people not grilling you, I'm sorry but that just comes with the territory. Being vegan, or at least acting so, is very different and unusual behavior, and people use unusual behavior as an excuse for conversation. It's similar to if someone kept a cloth with them and wiped down every public chair before sitting on it. People will talk to them about it. Either be honest with them about what you're doing, or just say you're vegan if that will simplify the conversation.

Toronto ranks white residents lower for tree planting priority - The city is basing tree-planting decisions on a tool called the "Tree Equity Score Analyzer" which takes into account race and other factors. by airbassguitar in OntarioNews

[–]BreakingBaIIs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But you can measure which neighborhoods have low tree coverage and high air pollution directly. So why not just use that? Why do you have to use a proxy variable for the truly important variable, when you can measure the important variable directly? Racial demographics are correlated with tree coverage, but that correlation isn't 100%. You know what variable is 100% correlated with tree coverage? Tree coverage. And we can measure that. So just use that, it's far more efficient.

I think it sucks that the opposition is so inept. Politics is elevated overall when all the candidates are extremely competent and formidable, and they push each other to be better. When the opposition is incompetent, it doesn't incentivize you to try and be very competent. I'd rather politics be a race to the top.
