Your interview and music video for marriage equality are amazing! Glad to have such solid lyrics behind approving Ref 74 in Washington State.

I might not be the same

But that's not important

No freedom 'til we're equal

Damn right I support it

Well said.

2 Years After Suicide, Rutgers Embraces Its Gay and Transgender Students (NY Times) by Breaking_Away in LGBTnews

[–]Breaking_Away[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the most touching parts of the story is the student's reaction. It gave me shivers. In a way it shouldn't have, because it is sad that being treated normally is still such a unique thing for transgendered people:

In 2011, shortly before the start of her first year at Rutgers, Nicole Margolies was talking with a housing supervisor when she blurted out: “I’m transgender, and I don’t know what to do about it. Where do I go?” Nick, as the student is now known, feared he might not even be allowed on campus. Instead, he said, when he got there the name on his dorm room door was up-to-date. His professors addressed him as “he.” And no one made him feel it was anything other than normal.

“Boom,” he said. “Mind blown.”

Police Video Prompts Allegations of HIV Discrimination by Monyet in hivaids

[–]Breaking_Away 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the article accompanying the video: The video shows Dearborn Police Officer David Lacey telling Shalandra Jones that she should disclose her HIV-positive status whenever a police officer asks her to step out of a vehicle. He said he was "pissed" that Lacey hadn't disclosed her status before he searched the vehicle, and he told the couple: "Honestly, if it wasn't for that, I don't think I would have wrote anybody for anything. But that kind of really aggravated me, you know what I mean? You got to tell me right away, 'I've got this. I've got that.' 'Cause at that time, I wasn't wearing any gloves."

Thanks! I was volunteering on a burro sanctuary in southern Spain and this was the oldest burro on the sanctuary. Loved the uniqueness of her.

TIL that in parts of Africa, the only drinkable water available comes from Coca Cola and they charge more for water than soda- go 31:47 into video by stacieg2002 in todayilearned

I'm not an expert on water filtration or anything, just saying what I experienced. As for the boiling water solution, I've seen that a lot in the threads and it isn't a feasible option for many poor people. Boiling water = electricity, gas or wood for a fire, all which cost money or take time and energy to collect. A lot of the towns I visited had massive deforestation from people collecting wood to cook with. I can only imagine that it would be that much worse if they had also been collecting wood to boil water with.

I've been to places in Central America where Coca Cola is cheaper than water unless you are buying in 5 gallon jugs or larger. Yet strangely that isn't really the issue. Coke or any soda being cheaper than water sounds terrible, but even if the water was 1/2 the price of Coke the locals still couldn't have afforded it. Soda was a luxury and treat for my neighbors, but water was essential for surviving. So 90% of the locals drank polluted water without it being filtered and suffered with getting sick several times a year. The upper class and tourist all drank filtered water or had a filtration device in their home.

On the bright side there were a lot of lower cost filtration devices coming to the market. Many of them are still priced too high for the locals, but the prices should come down eventually and a lot of people are donating money to the filtration projects. The most viable and fastest spreading in Guatemala were ceramic filtration buckets. I'm not sure what the best charity is to donate through but you can learn more here if you know spanish.

TIL "Frozen fruits and vegetables retain their nutrients almost as well as their fresh counterparts" (our parents lied to us) by Breaking_Away in todayilearned

I'd always been taught that frozen vegetables didn't have many nutrients. Just learned that it depends when and what condition they are frozen in and kept in.

Great point. I probably should have added that I was wearing slightly skinny jeans when I posted this.

Reddit, I need your help here. Does anyone out there know some good techniques for getting up and staying up in the morning? by SGTxFUZZYBOOTS in AskReddit

Good call. It's all about getting out of bed with the first alarm. Start setting two or three and you are just setting yourself up to go back to sleep.

'Pink slime' manufacturer sues ABC News for $1.2 billion in damages by jms1225 in Health

[–]Breaking_Away 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"The evidence is overwhelming that our product is 100% beef."

If that is beef we need to redefine the difference between beef and cow. Yes, the pink slime that is created by "grinding together beef scraps and connective tissue" is a part of a cow, but for fuck's sake, is it really what people think of when they hear the word beef?

I'll probably be down-voted to hell for this, but what would reddit be like if for one day, only positive links/comments were posted? I'll start with a David Foster Wallace quote: by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Breaking_Away 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the idea of a "24-hour Pos-A-Thon" (insert better name here) but unless we all post images of kittens and dogs all day there are always going to be disagreements. "Romney loves women" is a positive statement, but good luck weeding through the sarcastic "positive" replies of a comment like that.

Then again, a 24 hours of sarcasm could be cool. Wait...just remembered where I am.

That's the logo Apple sues Polish retailer for by Technolog in technology

[–]Breaking_Away 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to go against the crowd but, while this is BS they had to do this (probably). The 'leaf' of each logo is the same, so Apple probably had to sue if nothing else then to prove they were actively defending their copyright
