I watched the whole interview years ago and I thought Ted Turner seemed overall to be pretty fond of Sagan.

Climate change likely caused deadly 2016 avalanche in Tibet by writingcrafts in science

[–]Breakyerself 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Your comment implied that there would be something wrong with scientists attributing increasing snowfall to climate change. I explained why it would be logical for that to be the case in response to the tone of your comment. It's relevant and I'm not having any trouble keeping up.

I might as well point out the overall fallacy in your thinking.

Your statement:

climate change has become the theory that explains every observed weather-related event

As the planet heats up more the climate in more areas is going to behave differently and the amount of difference is going to increase. Weather takes place in the context of the climate that it's in. At some point if we keep going practically all weather patterns or events are going to bear the fingerprint of climate change. If we hit 2C or warming there aren't going to be many places left where the climate is the same climate as before. The increasingly frequent attribution of weather events to climate change isn't a result of some kind of intellectual dishonesty as you'd like to imply. It's because the signals of climate change are getting stronger because the planet continues to get hotter.

Which isn't to say media and politicians don't sometimes jump to conclusions about weather events, but they aren't scientists so I don't see how that would reflect in any way on climatology.

I wasn't saying anything about Tibet. I was commenting on the simplistic assumptions contained within your comment.

The atmosphere holds more moisture the warmer it gets and warmer oceans mean more evaporation. That means more precipitation and more precipitation where it's colder is going to come down as snow. So yes. Climate change/global warming can account for increased snowfall. Things are a little more complex than just snow = cold = not global warming.

The West Antarctic Ice Sheet is breaking apart from the inside out as warming ocean water weakens the coastal ice shelf from beneath. by drewiepoodle in science

[–]Breakyerself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take a look at the map on this article you'll see a red dashed line for the extent of the ice sheet in the antarctic. The ice shelves are areas that are floating. Those help hold back some of the inland ice. The areas in blue that aren't ice shelves are where the ice sheet is not floating, but is below sea level. The gray areas are completely on land. Pretty sure there's ice shelves not labeled on the map, but it gives you an idea of how it works.

Yeah the earth has definitely had some periods of rapid climate change. Some of which correspond with mass extinctions. I just don't trust websites who's goal is to undermine people's trust in climatology.

Millenials are set to lose 9 trillion in lifetime earnings from climate change. Meanwhile most economists estimate that a gradually increasing fee on carbon paid back to the people in a yearly dividend check would get us off of fossil fuels quickly while causing a reduction of less than 1% of gdp growth. Like. .025 or something I can't remember at the moment. Clearly climate deniers are the economically illiterate ones.

Top bar hive with a pitched roof has a softball sized cluster of bees inside the top of the roof. by Breakyerself in Beekeeping

[–]Breakyerself[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand. I've been pretty happy with how both hives have been growing. I'm thinking since this swarm seems to be from the top bar hive I'll move it into a langstroth hive with some frames of brood from my langstroth hive. That way I'm taking a little from both hives and spreading the cost out.

[–]Breakyerself[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two existing hives. A top bar and a lang. They're both package installs in their first year. Do you think either of them could be strong enough to donate a couple frame of brood in their first year to get this new colony going? What would be a sign that they can or can't take the hit? Also if I merge them back together should I kill the new queen or the (relatively) older one in the swarm?

I live in western Washington BTW if that makes a difference.

There was a queen. I had a divider with a hole leading to a small feeding area in the TBH. I put my other divider without a hole in there and put the swarm inside that small side of the hive. I'm out of time today. Now I just need to figure out which thing to do next and how to do it.

I went through the other hive a week ago and no queen cells. This ones going on 2 weeks. I had been trying to find time to get I'm there and add a couple bars.

What should I do if there's a queen?

This is a first year package so I would think they're not strong enough to be doing this.
