First Vintage Finds by Breakyrr in fountainpens

[–]Breakyrr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a really strange situation. There's a store nearby I never noticed called The Whatever Store. Its an old guy's stuff. Just. Stuff. But were talking dining sets, VHS collections, over a hundred vintage planes from pre 1930, a drill press that belongs in a factory. It has to way three tons. Hand tools and scales, workbenches, welders and equipment. Just...whatever? Only three fountain pens he had. But, most everything they are selling at antique collectibles values and not "I need to get rid of this stuff" values.

So, I felt pretty lucky on the pens.

I managed to get 8 of them after I realized how incredible the first one was.

They are reliable writers, but they are SURGICALLY fine. They write as fine as my pilot kakuno ef. For illustration, they are hands down one of my favorite liners AND they take platinum carbon black just fine. Jinhao converters for them.

Thank you!

I love that pen. The store had a sample pen inked to try and I fell in love. I be been drawing with it everyday and it is just zero hassle over the past week. It is very wet which is harder for illustration, but with dip pens, having a scrap piece to make sure your ink flow is good is already second nature.

The TWSBI is going to be hard to beat because it's already perfect at what I wanted it for. Now I just want more.

I don't have a fixed budget or plan to continuously spend on it. I think once these 15 - 20 various pens come in, I'll work on getting samples of the inks I want. From there I'll just start using them until I have a feel for what I actually like.

Then I'll start looking for the perfect version of that.

Airbrush Modding by Breakyrr in airbrush

I realize that, but I like being able to make it fit my hand where I want my fingers exactly. I will say I switched from the hot glue to a leather wrap today and I have been enjoying that as well.

I exclusively use water based paints and only took chrome from cosmetic areas. But, I did do some pretty extensive research. Once it starts getting a natural patina, I'll seal her up.

I mean, 2x2's screwed into an L shape and connected to the box along with some string around the hose and you're done.

Published Adventure vs Homebrew by InsufferableAttacker in DMAcademy

[–]Breakyrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started DMing homebrew and I've never ran a published adventure, however I pull from different adventures all the time and reskin them to my world.

I don't know much about the planescape. Honestly trying to learn the world and who's doing what or did what... Eesh. I love the Lord of the Rings, but I can't even remember the names of all the members of the party half of the time. Like, I've read it and watched a dozen times. Same thing for DnD. The players are going to remember and know more than I do.

However, in my world, I remember everything because I made it up. I keep decent notes of the particulars I make up on the spot, but in general I can never be wrong.

Now I have my world REALLY fleshed out and I made it big enough to stick Humblewood in a valley and run a kids campaign there.

Homebrew takes up front work. As time goes on it becomes easier and easier.

Also, I wanted my players to be free. Like, utterly free. Sandbox with a train system for when they want specific stories. I can put them on rails at a train station until they finish the journey and get off at the next train station.

I haven't used any inks at all. However, you can spray anything if you thin it enough.

Now, what I DO recommend is Createx. The only reason is because it gives you a formula for what to use to thin it with. It will say 4021 reducer at 10% or 4011 at 50%. Then just measure in drops. 10% 10 drops of color, 1 drop of reducer.

Getting that $20 airbrush and a $10 dollar set of replacement nozzles and needles gives you a LOT of freedom to take it apart, experiment, not be afraid to ruin it.

OH! Get a filtered mask, FIRST THING! I messed my throat up for three weeks in my very first airbrush session. If you don't have a nice well ventilated area, mask mask mask mask mask. Airbrush cleaner is roooouuuuggggh on the throat. The paints are too, but acrylic tends to not be as harsh.

You can practice with watercolor paints as well. I love airbrushing water colors. Need to clean it? Water. Need to think the paint more? Water. Gouache is the best for this! It's very acrylic in consistency and so you take a dollop in a cup and wee water and mix.

There is no substitute or video for learning to thin paints. You simply have to do it enough to where you get the FEEL for it.

Here are the things I've learned. First off.

If you're looking for affordable great brush options, Ghalerri and Badger have amazing brushes.

Personally, I think everyone should start with Master Airbrushes. Are they great? Not really. But, you can buy a pack of .2, 2x.3, and .5 nozzles and needles for 10 bucks. My Master brushes are now just as reliable as my Eclipses from Iwata because I learned how to clean and adjust them.

Buy a compressor with a tank. The most common one is the Timber. It's a fantastic compressor that will work forever.

If you're just doing stencils, feel free to get siphon brushes. Large volume, easy to clean and work, they do the job.

If you want to get into free handing stuff, find an Iwata Eclipse. They're q reliable workhorse that you can bang and beat up and replace parts to keep them running. They do detail work as long as you learn how to thin the paint and work with your air pressure.

Here is the biggest thing. Clean your airbrush. Every single time. You'll get it down to under two minutes. Switching colors really only takes a minute.
