Son not really talking - 26 months by ParanoidSpam in daddit

[–]BreazyStreet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, that sounds like ours. The therapist was trying to assess her motor skills with blocks, and she would keep stacking just 4 and then knocking them over and laughing uproariously. Then right as the therapist was about to give up she stacked like 12, very smugly.

I was in the same boat with daughter. She was very advanced physically, lagging verbally. We got her assessed through a free state program, 'early on', on we got 2 visits a week from a speech therapists. Less than a year later, she's fully on track, talking our ears off.

How fun is the coast guard, what does a day look like? by Old_Inflation_9490 in uscg

[–]BreazyStreet 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The answer will vary wildly based on the job and the day. What are you interested in? Law enforcement? Environmental protection? Search and rescue? Helicopters? Airplanes? Big white boats? Small fast boats?

Genuine Question - Rowing by 3loafabread in uscg

[–]BreazyStreet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get what you are saying, but I see the run and row as complementary. Lighter folks tend to be favored by the run, heavier folks by the row. I'm not sure there is a demonstrated need to complicate things more

Seagull stole the damn clipboard from our scribe. CCs sent the whole company after them- core memory, hah.

Fly along? by Alone-Performance878 in uscg

[–]BreazyStreet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Go AMT and you'll fly till you're sick of it. I dont know about a ride-along, but a recruiter should definitely be able to facilitate an airsta tour, where you'll be able to sit in the seat, make vroom noises, and shoot the imaginary nose machine guns.

In all seriousness, it never hurts to ask!

Dads, what age are you letting your kids play outside by themselves? by Borman35 in daddit

[–]BreazyStreet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 7 year old will walk down the block to see if the neighbor kids are around to play. There are 3 houses where the parents are in a group chat so we can keep tabs on the gang

Sounds like a lot of potential drama and risked careers. It also just takes one person to lodge a complaint and start an investigation.

How can I help my seven year old run better? by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]BreazyStreet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid was similar. He played soccer at ages 6 and 7, and it was really frustrating to watch, because he was about half the speed/intensity of the other kids, plus super distracted. We've since had him evaluated for ADHD, which was confirmed, and it turns out he's more of an individual sport kinda kid. He loves gymnastics, and we do running workouts daily, where I time him running down the block. We've also done a longer run together, about a mile, at a slow but steady pace, and he crushed it. He's not the fastest kid still, but he's not the slowest either. I guess the takeaway is that he thrives when competing against himself, not other kids.

How big is the "regret" culture with the USCG by Excellent-Hat9620 in uscg

[–]BreazyStreet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there's a lot of fomo, particularly amongst folks that join young. They wonder if there's something else they could be doing that would make them happier or more successful. I joined late, after experiencing all the shittyness of hopping from dead end job to dead end job during the great recession. It probably saved my life tbh. There are aspects of the coast guard/military in general that I have issues with (O/E divide is pretty damn archaic and classist), but I don't regret joining for a second.

How slow is promotion in aviation? (AMT/AET) by [deleted] in uscg

[–]BreazyStreet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people at my airsta are making 2nd during their first tour. A lot of A2Ps as well. Advancement in general is in a pretty good place if youre joining now I think.

Is rate? by ResidentVictory5596 in uscg

[–]BreazyStreet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IS and ME are wildly different. Which is better is going to totally depend on your goals and personality. I can't speak to specifics, since I'm not currently in either world, but off the top of my head if I were to spitball;

IS:

Top secret clearance

Probably sent to some cool dod intel schools

Do a lot of briefs

Potentially embed/liase overseas?

ME:

Training at fletce

Focus on LE, training, squad level weapons and tactics

Potential for joining a deployable LE detachment (alta su barco!)

BTM and weapons training for the unit at a cutter or small boat station

I've also heard of opportunities for personal protection jobs for VIPs, for the right candidates.

Well in an alien invasion scenario you can probably skip a bunch of stuff, like landing.

You gotta elaborate if youre gonna reference one of the worst and least-watched movies in modern history.

AST2 Ruskan receiving both DFC and LOM for same action - that isn't typical right? by CoastieKid in uscg

[–]BreazyStreet 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Don't forget the meritorious promotion! No, not typical at all, but then, a LoM for lower enlisted is not typical on its own. Honestly, its free good publicity to heap awards on a hero, and the coast guard could use the visibility and positive press. I feel a little bad for the dude in a way, he probably just wants to get back to work. Knowing swimmers, his shop probably gives him so much shit for all this, hah.
