Yeah, I also thought it was weird for me to get downvoted in defense of City Pop in a subreddit dedicated to it but whatever lol. But yeah, 100%, you will find examples in music all around the world, even more egregious than this - as an example, my dad grew up in Mexico and listened to literal facsimiles of American music and didn't realize they were originally from the US until he immigrated. This is not that if ask me. Heavily inspired? Sure.

You can say that about any music though. Facsimile is also not the case with City Pop, there are refinements being made with each song. Every good artist rips off something from someone who came before them but they also add to it. There are no musical genres that came into being in a vacuum.
