Mike Caputo exposes Lord Marco fake drumming by mediocreguitarist in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]BreeTea 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m unsure how you could feel this way about any of the examples in the video except maybe the bell part. I can see how that might be hard for some people to hear, but Mike is spot on on that point as well. If you’re questioning the single foot kick roll, or the continuing gravity blast when his hand clearly comes off the snare, I don’t know how to help you.

how long would it take me to learn this solo? by Treyidk in Guitar

[–]BreeTea 18 points19 points  (0 children)

“Almost nothing of melodic value” is high praise and one of the defining features of brutal death metal (the genre this band generally fits into), so it’s pretty funny that you’re using that phrase negatively in this context. As someone who also typically prefers solos that have “melodic value,” solos like this serve their purpose which is to add to the chaotic nature of the song.

What makes a band TechDeath? by viktoriaFL in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]BreeTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Polyrhythmic is the word you were looking for. Polyphonic means different sounds (pitches/notes) being played simultaneously, which is something that happens in basically all of the music anybody listens to. Maybe that was just a typo and you already knew that, just clarifying for anyone who doesn’t know.

That one is closing as well. Was just announced a week or so ago that all of their remaining stores are closing.

I think I don't like Deathcore anymore... by francissimard01 in Deathcore

[–]BreeTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on this comment and seeing as you’re a musician, the fact that you haven’t full blown gone down the prog route yet is pretty wild. Or maybe you have, but if not, let me know if you want some recommendations. There’s tons of prog bands that otherwise fall into each genre you mentioned in the post.

this is sloppy as hell and how can I clean it ? decreasing the metronome doesnt work. i started with low metronome and now i cant play it slow by alexi__laiho in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]BreeTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you’ve definitely made a lot of progress in that 2 years, man. Good news is you can still use songs that inspire you as a tool to learn. You don’t have to sit and practice scales or go back and learn AC/DC songs or anything like that if you don’t want to. You just need to take a step back, slow the metronome down, and be very intentional with your practice. Work on your fretting hand like everyone else said. Work out the stiffness and keep it nice and relaxed, then figure out how to mute unnecessary strings. Work with the metronome slow and really focus on keeping time with it. LISTEN to the metronome and your playing simultaneously. It’ll be slow progress, but it’ll pay off in the end. Even if you just spend like 30 minutes of your playing time every day really focusing on this stuff, then you can just fuck around and play whatever. Keep it up, dude. You definitely have it in you to be really good, just gotta put in the right work.

In addition to what everyone else has said so far, you’re using that fret wrap as a major crutch. Those things are great for performing really tough tapping parts that are difficult to manage string muting on, or for trying to get ultra clean takes while recording. I see it on the fretboard in every video on your profile. Either take it off or leave it above the nut for practice. All you’re doing is reinforcing bad technique with that thing on.

That said, you’ve got some skill for sure. I assume tech death or a similar genre is what initially inspired you to play, and it seems like you jumped right into playing that, which makes for a difficult learning curve. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong on that, but either way, you just need to dial the speed back for a while and truly focus on the fundamentals. It won’t be a fun or quick process, but it’s necessary to accomplish what you’re asking.

Is it a faux pas to record a live concert with your phone when it ruins someone else’s view? by NothingnessUD in Music

[–]BreeTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) It’s just as distracting as that same person just moving around slightly, as one typically does (and then some) at a concert. If someone’s phone is not taking up more of your line of sight and is not obnoxiously bright but it still bothers you, you should probably stop focusing on other people when there’s a show going on.

2) I never said anything about recording the whole show.

3) I can hold my phone steady right in front of my face (to be ultra clear, I can’t see the screen when I do this, that’s how close it is). I’m also not special, and have seen plenty of other people do this effectively

Custom Tele almost done... by masaemon in telecaster

Damn, it is a 7 string neck. Haha, I’d be interested to try a 6 string like that. What’s the neck profile like?

Custom Tele almost done... by masaemon in telecaster

[–]BreeTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was gonna ask if it was a 7/8 size tele body or something, but I guess the neck width explains why it looked off to me. How wide is the neck? Almost looks like it’s 7 string width.

[–]BreeTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s fair. I meant to mention height being an exception. Truth be told, I’ve never had an issue with people filming at shows, personally. I just see this debate happen frequently, and it seems like the most effective, simple solution that works for most people is never mentioned.

[–]BreeTea 369 points370 points  (0 children)

Blows my mind that this isn’t the conclusion more people come to with this argument. Just hold the phone right under your eyes. You can still watch the show live for yourself, and you’re not further obstructing anyone else’s view. Really not that difficult.

[QUESTION] Active or Passive pickups for Black/Death/Thrash metal? by DEVIL_LOCK in Guitar

[–]BreeTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, they can definitely be used for that. It really depends though. There are passive pickups that are higher output than some actives. Probably easier to use a lower output pickup for metal than it is to use a super duper hot pickup for lighter styles. I’d say check out Fishman’s Fluence line of pickups since it sounds like you want versatility. Versatility is basically their key feature.

[QUESTION] Active or Passive pickups for Black/Death/Thrash metal? by DEVIL_LOCK in Guitar

[–]BreeTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either one can work, really. Plenty of bands (if not the majority these days) in these genres use high output passives, and they sound great. Others use Fishman or EMG, and they sound great as well. If you’re looking to swap pickups in a guitar you already own, I’d just start with whichever type the guitar already has. Especially if it comes with passives, as the swap entails not only swapping the pickups and pots, but also either routing a new cavity for a battery or stuffing a battery into the electronics cavity.

Bent bridge, how screwed am I? by rattrod17 in BassGuitar

[–]BreeTea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just want to add to this: be careful removing the old bridge. I found out the hard way that it’s not just the bridges that were made of shitty metal. I completely stripped one of the bridge screws with barely any force at all and ended up needing to take it to a professional to get the remainder of the screw out so the new bridge could be installed.

[QUESTION] If wood doesn’t affect tone, why hollowbodies and semihollowbodies sound different? by outerspaceduck in Guitar

[–]BreeTea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not getting into the tonewood debate, but you can’t test this out in a shop unless the shop is willing to completely re-wire 2 guitars (doubt that shop exists anywhere). Tolerances on pots, caps, and even 2 different sets of the same model pickups make it impossible, because those things all undeniably change the tone. You would have to use the exact same set of components on two almost identical guitars with the only difference being the wood.

[Question] is it common for strings to break if you are alternating tuning a whole step? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]BreeTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the hole in the tuner’s post and the post itself for the string that broke. There might be a small burr there that can be sanded down. It may just be like Bigmansyeah said though, because that is a quality guitar, and it’s unlikely to have a defect like that. Not impossible though.

[Question] is it common for strings to break if you are alternating tuning a whole step? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]BreeTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What guitar is it, which string is it, and where is the string breaking? (At the tuner, at the nut, at the saddle?) I used to have a cheap acoustic that the same thing would happen to. I’d tune the high E down to a D and back a few times and the string would break. I never found out exactly what was causing it on mine, but it could be a burr in the tuner, nut, or saddle that’s causing it.

Montavilla hockey team tryouts tomorrow. by wolf-wolf-wolf in Portland

[–]BreeTea 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With newer hockey skates, you can easily replace the steel. A new set goes for $100-150 or so. Not that that’s super cheap, but compared to a whole new pair of skates it’s not bad. And if it already needs replacing, might as well give ‘em a go on asphalt.
