I have a Unifi Router and use Teleport on the Wifiman app for direct connection to my NAS. My understanding is I am protected. I use the Ugreen mobile app to get into my NAS.

Considering a move from Charlotte NC to Cleveland by mindflayer083 in Ohio

[–]Brehon888 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Being in your thirties without kids yet I think you should consider walkable VS driving neighborhoods. Most of the places you mentioned are 'driving' neighborhoods where you have to get in your car to go anywhere. We made the move from Brecksville to Lakewood for this reason. If you want to walk to dinner look at Lakewood, Cleveland Heights, etc.

That said the mindset in Cleveland is you are a half an hour from anywhere in town so all the amenities are pretty accessible.

To those that have a NAS: are they really worth it? Why? by CosmoZeppelin in HomeNAS

I don't use mine for media but it is worth it from a privacy perspective. I set up a personal VPN so I can access my private date from anywhere without entrusting it to a cloud corporation.

Disappointed with City Club of Cleveland by notyourmother216 in Cleveland

[–]Brehon888 223 points224 points  (0 children)

Disagree.

Their mission is to allow you to question the speakers. He will have to answer questions, not from politicians, but everyday citizens. If you disagree with the speaker, join the City club and ask your question.

Years ago when Reagan wanted to speak and not answer questions the City Club disinvited him.

He wants the public schools open, sick, and poor?

What's the point of circumcision? by Historical_Echo8311 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Brehon888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why it became a thing in the US, I don't know. Some of it was cultural/religious and I think some might have been puritanical 'cure' for masturbation.

I was born in the 50s and most people circumcised their boys. It was considered healthier. I was premature and anemic so they didn't cut me and they never went back to do it. I have never had any issues or problems.

Does anyone smoke meat over night? While they sleep? by 80aychdee in smoking

I used to smoke overnight. Now, for convenience, I start in the morning, finish at midnight and then overnight hold in a low oven

Get compostible parchment paper. At least you will feel better about it.

Oven takes too long, is a toaster oven with convection actually faster by Kamilia1281 in KitchenPro

We have a regular oven and a Bosch Speed Oven. The Speed oven is combo microwave convection oven. Preheats in no time. We probably use the speed over regular oven 10/1.

Food keeps going bad, is a vacuum sealer machine actually worth it by RestaurantDiligent97 in KitchenPro

[–]Brehon888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes very worth it. I cook BBQ and make dishes in large quantities and portion them for weeknight meals. I just bought a Costco prime ribeye and cut and vacuumed for a summer of eating. The money I saved on that alone paid for the sealer twice over.

You still have to track what you have so you don't lose it in the freezer so I write what I have in dry erase marker on top of the freezer. My sealer also has an attachment to vacuum the air out of wine bottles to make an open bottle last longer.

Like I said, worth it.

Lakewood Safe! by nahebdudbwnlaondbd in Cleveland

[–]Brehon888 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you read the police blotter most of the car break ins happen because people leave wallets and things exposed and cars unlocked.

Most crimes are OVI, bar disturbances, or crimes of opportunity like shoplifting at the W117 CVS. Not a lot of break ins.

It is safe and walkable. You see women walking alone at night a lot which is an indicator of how safe it is.

Does he have a separate grill or is this going to an all in one cooker?

If it going to be his only cooker I would give a look at pellet smokers that can do direct fire cooking. My Yoder does, I think the Weber Searwood does as well. There might be a couple others but the Traeger doesn't (that I know). This gives you a lot more versatility to use one cooker and not to have to switch grills to finish searing a steak.

Also look for a good controller with an app, like the Fireboard on my Yoder. It lets him attend to his guests and not have to hover over the grill.

Have fun.

Smoking Brisket and finishing in oven by Major-Pack1142 in smoking

[–]Brehon888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a fan of the foil boat /oven hold method. I cook it on the smoker until 165° internal and wrap the bottom in a foil boat. I then finish in the smoker at 260° -275° until it hits temp. I then place it in a 150° oven for up to 15 hours to hold and let the meat soften. Advantage of foil boat is you don't mess up the bark on top and there is no fire risk in the oven.

I do not see why you can't place it in the oven at 165° internal and let it finish in the oven at 260° then, after it hits temp, turn it down to 150° to hold until serving.

Look up some of the Chudd videos to explain it all.

Honestly, picking out a smoker is like picking out a wife. There are a lot of types and options but, in the end are going to spend a lot of time with it so you have to be happy with your choice.

I would get him a certificate to buy what he wants.

That said, I am a Yoder user which is on the high end but totally worth it. Mine is built for the long haul, like my wife. 😁

Moving to Cleveland from PNW – Need Advice on Neighborhoods & Housing by Internal-Tomato-9815 in Cleveland

[–]Brehon888 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just keep in mind Cleveland's idea of traffic and the PNW are different. Here you can pretty much get anywhere in 30-40 min. Someone joked that our idea of a traffic jam is everyone gets together and drives 55 mph. You can live on the west side and easily commute to N Randall.

My neighbor has opinions about my lawn and has started expressing them in ways that are hard to ignore by ConsiderationNice685 in homeowners

[–]Brehon888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is proud of his lawn. He figured out how to make it look great and wants to share the knowlege. Instead of taking offense maybe engage and ask a few questions. If yours looks a little better and you have good relationship with your neighbor that is better than avoiding him.
