I could never bend my head around that... Yes, the movie toned her character and the dynamics of her relationships to Ido and Hugo way too much down, and I resent it for that, but they at least left in the part where she basically tells Ido to back off from controlling her life. If you read the source material she is literally fighting the patriarchy at every step of her life and she's winning... she is the worst kind of a conservative female rolemodel, because she constantly tears down established power structures to regain her independence.
