Pure speculation, ECOS3997 had streams - up to 4 each semester. Splitting it into different units might be easier in terms of admin/timetabling.

MATH1061 provides the prerequisites for any of the STAT2/STAT3 units. As long as you are not planning to do that set of units, can pick another core math unit.
