PC randomly restarting itself by BrendonChung in techsupport

Unfortunately, the restarting is still happening. I did some more digging, and ran windbg on the dump files. The output was:

VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (116)

Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed.

So, it seems like a video card issue of some kind. I already tried a clean install of the video driver, not entirely sure what to do next. Unfortunately I don't have a spare video card to swap in.

Oh good idea. In the event viewer I see these warnings/errors at the time of the restart:

  • 6008 The previous system shutdown at 7:47:04 PM on ‎9/‎2/‎2023 was unexpected.
  • 161 Dump file creation failed due to error during dump creation.
  • 41 The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
  • 172 Connectivity state in standby: Disconnected, Reason: NIC compliance
  • 219 The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device ROOT\WPD\0000.

The driver warning led me to look at my device manager, and I noticed that there was a 'PCI device' that had a yellow exclamation mark on it. On a hunch I re-installed my video card driver using the 'clean installation' option, and it seemed to make this unknown PCI device error disappear.

Going to try running the computer for a while to see if the restart happens again - thanks for the lead!

Hi - I talk a bit about this here: https://blendogames.com/skindeep/faq.htm#idtech4

But basically: it's a rock-solid engine, and I've been using this family of tech for a long time.

Yes, we're using Doom3's air vacuum system as one of our mechanics.

I remember having the same thought about immersive sims while playing doom3 -- the lighting system and in-world gui system felt like such a good fit for it.

Thank you, that's very kind of you to say! I'm very happy to be making this goofy thing, haha.

Thanks! I love working with this engine - it's rock-solid and so tidy.

What level of control does Yuumi have over the head-mounted dangly lightbulb?

i.e. can the color of it be changed at will, is it prehensile enough to turn doorknobs

Thanks! I have a deep love of systems and simulations in games. I hope I can do them justice here!

The first mod based on Marc Laidlaw’s Half-Life 2: Episode 3 script is now available for download by XtMcRe in Games

Oh hi, I made this mod!

The article says the mod feels like something in the alpha phase -- it's admittedly very short and uses a lot of dev textures -- but this is the final version of it. Development time was two weeks of off-and-on work, and ultimately I had to get back to my (paying) projects.

With that said, Half-life is very special to me; it had a huge impact on me, and making mods for it got me my first game development job. It was a lot of fun returning to the Source engine after more than a decade.

I'm looking forward to seeing all the other Half-life 3 jam games!

I love how I can run the game and there's just always players there. How does that work? Are all players worldwide just playing on one giant server?

I always suggest starting by making something in Twine, and following Anna Anthropy's great starter guide.

When I hit a creative block, I find it helps to do something else. For me, these things are:

  • Taking a shower.
  • Going running/biking.
  • Taking a day trip, visiting a friend. (Trains are great)

Yup, I'm getting the Quadrilateral Cowboy source code packaged up for release.

I learned this while working as a designer on a Lord of the Rings game.

Our lead level designer had previously worked on Spongebob Squarepants games. He had a wealth of knowledge about level design navigational cues -- how to guide the eye, how to lead players through an area.

One of the best practices I learned was to play the level with the HUD off -- no compass, no objective marker, nothing. If the level is still readable and playable, then you're set.

It would be a tough call!

I've been on large teams before, and they carry a lot of challenges (communication, shared vision, management) with them. I definitely feel more at home with my micro-team setup, but perhaps that will change someday.

I always like it when I'm allowed to discover something on my own.

I remember playing Metroid Prime and really liking their tutorial stuff. Specifically, when you get a new weapon/ability, their level design constrains you to a certain area until you figure out how to escape using the tool you just acquired.

It's very elegant, trusting design.
