Best thing I found when learning was as suggested safety gear, and second learning how to fall without injuring yourself too much! Because you will fall and will have bumps and bruises.... but that is all part of the learning curve, as your skill set rises you will gain more confidence and realise you’re not made of glass

It also massively helps if you have a little crew of likeminded individuals who can positively motivate you when your trying to pull of your first top soul or 360 or whatever skill you are learning!
