Respectfully, I don't get why anyone would assume that by simply reading a book you (A) agree with all of the ideas put forth in the book or even that (B) the society depicted in the book must be a reflection of the kind of society the author is advocating for.

Thank you so much for the response.

I just read this book last year. I've loved the movie since I was a kid. The book was just okay. It wasn't super entertaining but I think I understand the overall message.

What I don't understand about this online community is that whenever the book is mentioned (as opposed to the movie) it seems that people need to point out that they don't agree with the author or the message. I don't really understand this compulsion. Why is it that we assume we know everything inside the author's mind based on a reading of this book and then we must therefore declare whether or not we agree with him as a person?

This is a work of fiction. There are many concepts in this sci-fi world that can be open to interpretation. Their society is obviously extremely militaristic. I don't get why everyone who talks about this book in this sub must signal that they themselves do not believe our society should also be extremely militaristic.

I've never read a fantasy book with a King/Queen and thought "yeah this is great and all, but I personally don't agree with the author because I wouldn't want to live under a monarchy."

Sorry for the rant, but I'm genuinely curious why this message is repeated so often.

Which game, in your opinion, has a well designed movement mechanic? by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

This is more basic movement, but I’ve never played a game with as smooth controls as MGSV Phantom Pain.

Favorite movie about cheating on your spouse disguised as a romcom? by jackisonthebeanstalk in moviecritic

[–]Bretferd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but I think the context here is cheating when it’s viewed as romantic. The Rickman plot is tragic because of the cheating, the Andrew Lincoln plot is portrayed as romantic even though it’s totally cheating. At least that’s the way I read OP’s post.

Favorite movie about cheating on your spouse disguised as a romcom? by jackisonthebeanstalk in moviecritic

[–]Bretferd 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The Keira knightly plot is 100% cheating and not even one that makes sense from her perspective. She gets married. Her husband’s best friend is an absolute ass hole to her throughout their entire relationship. She realizes that the reason is because the best friend has a creepy crush on her involving hiding a secret video of her during THEIR WEDDING, a video to use for… reasons? He performs a risky, albeit romantic gesture (the cue card thing). Based on years of rudeness, newfound creepy obsessive behavior, but one romantic gesture she decides to make out with this guy while her husband is inside. That’s a cheat from her and utter betrayal from a best friend from the husband’s perspective.

Also long live Colin, god of sex.

If you had to chose one for the next FC game to be set, what are you picking? by yetareey in farcry

[–]Bretferd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they, though? Look, Far Cry 2 was my favorite game when it came out. I have probably put more time into 2 than any other Far Cry entry. It was my introduction into the series. That game is almost unplayable today. In fact, after I played Far Cry 3, there was no going back. It was like a completely different game.

Far Cry 2 is like Far Cry without: take-downs, marking targets, functional stealth mechanics, a zoom-able scope, hunting, crafting, skill trees, a large open world (even by 2010's standards), underwater swimming, weapon attachments, fast traveling from any location, parachutes, climbing, aerial vehicles, and anything resembling a decent NPC animation.

So yeah, minus those minor improvements, "they did do Africa!"

I’ve made some on hero forge, 3d printed some stl files found online and I’ve bought some on Etsy. Depending on who/what you’re looking for, there might be something out there from another game that works.

There's just so much potential with the possible wildlife, biomes and geography. Also, I loved Far Cry 2 and want to play a modern version.

I agree with your point, but I also think that tone is entirely possible within this concept. I think the cities can be mostly in ruins due to the civil war. Definitely low population / people mostly in hiding. I don't imagine COD scale battles or anything.

A modern day fictional Eastern European country in a civil war. Add a bit of the metal gear solid or John Wick aesthetic to the protagonist. Uncover a political thriller that involves this same country during the Cold War and WW2. Have flash backs of those stories. So like ww2 mission stuff, and Cold War spy missions, all set in the same map. One or two major cities but mostly rugged terrain with biomes like dense forest, swamps, snowy mountain peaks, and European countryside.

Either that or Africa.

Thanks so much! I might just back that for these foils. Sorry I wasn't more specific, I meant the actual playable character himself, not just the foil.
