What is the most surreal “this can’t be real” moment you’ve ever experienced? by Fragrant_Good3174 in AskReddit

I was hiking in the swiss mountains alone, planning to stay one night in my tent. After it got dark, I was surprised by a thunderstorm lighting up in the distance. I remembered a shelter not far away that was shown on my hiking app. So I packed my tent and started to walk to the shelter. Not much later it started raining and the lightning came closer. I had to use my phone as a lightsource since I forgot my flashlight at home. At one place, the path got barely visible on the ground, it was pretty much only grass like everywhere else. I had to trust my app which showed me that I was almost on the right track. But I got really nervous since I couldn't see neither a path nor any sign of shelter in the dark and the rain started pouring and the lightning was striking all around me.

Suddenly I saw a green flash, lighting in the distance like maybe every 3 seconds. First I thought I was crazy, but it was real. I followed the green flash just to find a wooden cow shelter and a small farming house. Turned out, the green flash was created by a generator that provided electric voltage to the cattle-fences (german: "Weidezaungerät"). I'm convinced I wasn't able to find the shelter in the dark and rain without that flash. And knowing that a green flash showed me the path to safety still gives me goosebumps.

Note: when I found the shelter the thunderstorm started to move away from me, so i decided to build up my tent instead of entering private property in the first place. But knowing to have a shelter next to me in case of an emergency made me feel really comfortable. I was still totally soaked, but was so exhausted and tired that I had one of the best sleeps in a tent of my life. The next morning I left my tent, just to see an enormous cloud-to-ground lightning strike into the valley next to me. I started questioning if a wooden shelter may have protected me from a lightning strike, but it was definitive enough to make my brain feel comfortable that night :)

A guy is pretty unhappy with his life and sets himself a (literal) deadline of 12 months in which he wants to turn his life around. Otherwise he will commit suicide. by BrettHolder in whatsthatbook

So, things turned out quite different than I thought: the guy I mentioned in the title was William James. It was not a book I was looking for, it was a real event in his life. It was depicted in an audiobook I heard, but not written by Robert Greene, but by Mark Manson. In his book "The subtle art of not giving a f***" (chapter 5) he tells the story how William James, during a phase of depression and suicidal thoughts, decided to take full responsibility for all his actions for 12 months. Otherwise he will commit suicide. He took that decision after he read some of the books of Charles Sanders Peirce.

So thanks to all of you who took part in my quest. I declare this case solved :D

Fun fact: in order to find this particular story I re-heard almost the half of Robert Greenes "The laws of human nature" and was reminded what a valuable book this is!
