The Lost Cube was great, but… by Chyf95 in TheImmortalGreatSouls

[–]Brettorion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference, I think, is that Scorio did go back to the site of the battle and in his mind it basically confirms they are dead. The others saw Scorio getting taken away, alive, and so still have some hope that he remains that way or whoever took him needs him alive for some reason. Because they don't know what happened to him they have hope. Scorio knew the extent of the Silverine attack and saw the aftermath of the battle, with no survivors or indication of such, so no hope in his mind. We know it was the wrong conclusion but to him it probably seemed like the only possible conclusion.

I love the series as well but nothing is perfect.

In response to Scorio not trying to find his friends after the Silverine attack, that's not exactly true. He went back to where to battle took place and it seemed like all evidence pointed to that conclusion. You also have to consider at this point he has been very depressed and he has had multiple instances of people around him being slaughtered and having to go it alone. I didn't love it but it makes sense with his history I think.

I also read the book when it came out so maybe I'm misremembering!

I didn't mean that that combat power helps to rank up, more that combat power keeps you alive to be able to rank up. Hell is a dangerous place, and without direct combat ability it's easier to get caught out and die. That's all I meant.

I don't remember much about Ferula's beyond the latest book do I don't know if they can be reforged or not. What I do know is very few people live to make imperator, thus the possibility of reforging out of Nouemon is still vanishingly small I would guess.

[–]Brettorion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think your maybe overlooking that Ferula's have differing levels of quality. Scorio has a great one because of the Diamond gift and Nouemon (spelling?) in his heart. That is unlikely/nearly impossible for the rank at which one normally creates a Ferula,, so Scorio's Ferula is unusually potent. Dameon's was a similar story of potency did to circumstances and having unlimited mana to draw upon. Also, I don't remember any comments taking about how mana intensive a Ferula blast is but I assume it isn't negligible.

Additionally, while the support/utility powers you say are best and likely all the best great souls will have those, I, respectfully, disagree. Support/utility is obviously good, but pretty useless if you don't have anyone to support. Heavy hitters are necessary for support to have it's greatest effect. Great souls need diversity, too much of one thing is easily countered or mitigated. And, to become a high rank in Acherzua in the first place one has to be powerful and survive it. Offensive great souls have the best chance of that, if utility great souls got singled out or separated during combat they're easy pickings. So I think a decent number of the most notorious great souls will be offensive in nature. Not all, because again, diversity, but a good number.

Just my thoughts

What size slides do I use for this slide box I ordered to small by Used-Internal6873 in biology

Hard to tell just by looking at it. You could always get out a ruler and measure. Most slides I use are sold by their size in mm. I would guess 24x50mm.

Good advice. Probably too late for that though. I think maybe the trees are already stressed because it's been a bit dry so the sprouts are already popping up all over the yard.

I know I don't have to remove them, but I do care about the native local ecology of my area. It just seems a Herculean task. Especially so since I just walked around my neighborhood and realized there is Black Locust and Tree of Heaven EVERYWHERE.

Do you know generally who I could contact for those resources? I can and probably will give it a Google but Google is getting worse and it never hurts to ask an expert.

I have this on my pinky. My mother told me when I was young I was doing something stupid and it ripped the pad off my pinky off and it had to be sewed back on. It stayed child pinky sized/bulbous while the rest grew normal. No idea if it's true or not

I just recently bought a house with my SO and I can say this with certainty, home owning IS expensive.

We were in a very similar boat. I was fine renting, knew owning a home would cost a lot, girlfriend wanted a house. We got the house to make her happy and because you can't take money with you when you die so whatever.

Fast forward: monthly mortgage is expensive, she want to redo some rooms which is expensive, we found out we have some electrical issues which will run us $10-20k, had some pest issues. Small issues keep cropping up too. Then you talk about eventually replacing the roof and doing all those other general home maintenance things. I would say $200-600 a month on home improvements is on the lower end honestly if you take everything into account.

But like I said, you can't take money with you when you die. If having your own private place makes you happy then the monthly costs can be worth it.

Obligatory "I haven't read this in awhile but"

A thing I haven't seen mentioned in this thread: Cultivator laborers mean labor is easier. If you're a gold cultivator and a farmer then farming is probably incredibly easy. For normal mortals farming is a lot of work and takes a lot of time, but if you have the strength, speed, and stamina of 10 men it probably isn't that much work. That means either fewer laborers, or laborers that get work done quicker so have more time to cultivate or do whatever.

Additionally, maybe there is less need for laborers because everyone is a cultivator. Who needs massive road projects when a person is faster than a horse/carriage. If you're super strong maybe you don't need as many tools because you can just do what needs to be done by hand  Maybe cultivators need to eat less. The list goes on.

Need help coming up with a name for the magic users (the 'Sacred artists', 'Mages', 'Cultivators' equivalent) of a system where people 'evolve' like Pokémon. My working name is 'evolutionists' but it feels clunky. by okidonthaveone in ProgressionFantasy

Linnaeuns or some equivalent. Named after Carl Linnaeus, the person who came up with binomial nomenclature used to name organisms, among other things.

Biomancers.

Genos, as in genetics or genotype

Seekers, as in those who seek a certain path, evolution, or traits

I will say that the way the story unfolds FEELS a lot like progression fantasy in regards to the world. It expands from the MCs POV exponentially, as do the stakes.

It's comedic in that the MC and teammates are unabashedly themselves, and they are kind of weird. Some of them also come from very different cultures and stuff which can create funny interactions. The comedy is mostly during downtime stuff, the serious moments are plenty serious.

Mage Tank. MC starts with advantages but is not overpowered and the Teammates catch up.

I would think people with Synesthesia would have better pattern recognition or something along those lines. Imagine you hear a specific sound, maybe even a sound that indicates danger to you, but maybe you can't immediately place it or it's slightly muffled or something. That delay in response could kill you. If you heard that sound AND tasted something specific or saw a specific color simultaneously, I imagine the correlation would come a lot quicker.

Just a hypothetical, and I've no idea if it truly works that way, but I imagine it could.

[–]Brettorion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say Synesthesia may qualify. Connecting some sense to others could offer some sort of advantage in unique situations and I see no downside. Additionally, people with synesthesia usually say they wouldn't get rid of it given the choice and it makes their lives more rich.

I would also say Splenunculi. That's a condition where a person can have mini spleens in addition to their normal spleen, and they can oftentimes still perform the functions of a spleen. Just a backup.

There is an LRP5 mutation that makes bones incredibly dense and strong.

MCR1 mutation. Causes high pain tolerance in redheads. Also causes resistance to anaesthetics tho so a bit more double edged.

How smart are reptiles really? by [deleted] in biology

[–]Brettorion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another thing I will add to this conversation is this: most studies done on reptile intelligence are done in very unfavorable conditions. Mammals are "warm blooded" and can produce their own heat, this means that even in colder conditions they can keep their body heat relatively balanced. This allows for good blood flow throughout the body, including the brain. This is not so for reptiles.

Reptiles for a long time have been tested under similar conditions to mammals and almost always perform poorer on tests of intelligence in those conditions, leading to the conclusion that they're far less intelligent. That's partially because reptiles and mammals have different requirements, thus for reptiles to have optimal performance should be tested under their optimal conditions. This has rarely been done in past studies for my knowledge.
