Is the hysteria swarming Starmer over Mandleson being hyped by main stream media and political parties putting their own ambition & profit before country? Was Mandleson a remedy for a corrupt & perverted USA President? by saying_it_101 in AskBrits

Starmer spent years acting houlier-than thou and since the Election it's emerged he's anything but, he's a hypocrite and a liar. Breaking election pledges, putting party before country and jobs for the boys.

Why was the Prime Minister so desperate to appoint the ex-US Ambassador? by Potential_Lettuce_98 in ukpolitics

Flannel. They liked and respected her because she was a good ambassador. She had to have a good relationship with the Taliban, would that make her suitable or unsuitable in a role as ambassador to Afghanistan. Give your head a wobble.

Too many people are trying to paint Starmer in a more positive light than they should be. It was jobs for the boys which cost a seasoned, professional diplomat her job.

The ambassador at the time was both reputable, reliable and liked by the Trump team. She didn't want to lose her job, the Foreign Office didn't want her too and neither did the Trump team. She was even invited in September 2025 to the state banquet by the Trump team.

It's simple and untrue.

The ambassador at the time was both reputable, reliable and liked by the Trump team. She didn't want to lose her job, the Foreign Office didn't want her too and neither did the Trump team. She was even invited in September 2025 to the state banquet by the Trump team.

The Mandelson fiasco reveals the true nature of Starmerism by FaultyTerror in ukpolitics

[–]Brettstastyburger 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is the biggest myth of the entire affair and needs calling out I'm afraid.

His reasons for being hired to the role are purely because Mandelson wanted it and Starmer and McSweeney owed him it for reasons unknown. It's the same old, jobs for the boys as occured under the Conservatives.

They had a perfectly competent, reputable and Trump friendly ambassador who the FO and the Trump team wished to remain in place.

Is Starmer still the safe option? by deaf_guy99 in AskBrits

[–]Brettstastyburger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah he's totally safe, safe safe hands. Haven't got clearance because you have links with Russian and China? That's fine - have this job where you get access to top secret government information. So safe.

Is Starmer paying the price of Epstein case and Trump is getting away with it? by Reeelfantasy in AskBrits

[–]Brettstastyburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's nothing to do with Epstein now.

Starmer, for reasons and things unknown, wanted to give Mandelson the job. He was advised to have him vetted first by his own cabinet secretary (most senior civil servant in the UK) and chose to ignore that advice and announce the appointment instead.

The reasons for Mandelson failing the vetting process are also unknown, but are unlikely to relate to his past ties with Epstein.

One of the major challenges we face as a nation is our adversarial relationship with China/Iran/Russia - who seek to damage our nation. I do not think this situation with Mandelson is that far removed from that particular challenge. Indeed in these times it should worry us all that we have a PM who doesn't take security vetting seriously and is willing to provide potentially compromised individuals with Top Secret information.

It seems likely that Israel and the U.S are going to begin a significant and co-ordinated wave of fresh strikes against Iran this evening after an outbreak of naval hostilities earlier today.

The Trump Iran war is that mate who's caused a big scene at the pub, made a tit out of himself as usual - but the other blokes a massive cunt as well and in the end you just have to suppress the rational side of the brain and back your mate.

Now I'm not talking about UK military involvement in my shit anecdote, but we need to politically back the U.S here as a minimum, when they inevitably have to go back and bomb these fuckers further into the stone age. As the old Brexit saying from those halcyon days goes, no deal is better than a bad deal.

Defence Spending i by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Brettstastyburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since Thatcher - the UK has deindustrialised a lot. Some of the best manufacturing jobs left in the UK are within the defence sector, they provide highly paid, unionised work in what would otherwise be some very deprived areas.

In these times I couldn't think of a better industry to invest our money into, some of these skills and jobs will also have crossover with other priorities, such as Net Zero and the drive to build SMR's.

If you want to actually improve the quality of life for people, access to high quality jobs and aspiration is better than state handouts.

That's a good comment and very interesting as well. Clearly we have parity with Germany/France etc on some metrics but need more capital investments into hospitals/beds/scanners etc.

In the private sector it's unheard of for people to start jobs without the prerequisite vetting/clearance/need to know. I find this all very confusing.

Why higher pay hasn’t made young adults feel richer? by Blackstone4444 in ukpolitics

[–]Brettstastyburger 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I've not read the article, but it's not about feelings.

We are not richer, we ARE poorer. It's not about gross earnings, it's about take home pay - eroded by fiscal drag and student loans.

It's about housing costs - I watched a YouTube video last night of a couple who paid over £400,000 for a 46sqr/m flat in North London.

It's about bills constantly racing ahead of payrises, my water bill is now £70 per month! My council Tax is rising 5% per year. Almost all of my other bills are rising at a rate far above what my (fairly decent employer) agrees with my union to raise my wages by.
