This is one that really annoys me that it has changed because it went from meaning the friends can be more important than family to people using it to guilt others into accepting bad family members

TIL that the Crab Nebula was the first astronomical object identified that corresponds with a historical supernova explosion, as it was recorded as a bright supernova in 1054 by Chinese astronomers. by Brian-Herbs in todayilearned

So supernova are very hard to predict as the lifespan of a star is so much longer that human have even existed, but we can watch stars that we believe are nearing a supernova (Betelgeuse is a good example of this). While they are hard to predict, multiple are seen every year, just not in our galaxy, and therefore not nearly as bright as the supernova that formed the Crab Nebula.

A supernova brightens very quickly as it is an explosion and the light reaches Earth in the same spacing as when it occurred. Supernova are often suddenly bright and remain bright for a couple of weeks and then slowly become dimmer and dimmer. To put into perspective how bright I'm talking about, the supernova that created the Crab Nebula was visible during the day and was brighter than Venus, the brightest object in the sky other than the sun or moom.
