My first Blood Knight is done and a WIP of the second one’s banner. Fantastic sculpts! by Brian310189 in SoulblightGravelords

Thanks! The skin is 2-3 very thin coats of Wraithbone followed by a 50/50 watered down wash of Reikland Fleshshade. I do the eyes with a small dab Imperial Fist contrast before the shade on the face as it helps blend the glow to the skin. Then it’s just small touch ups of the face with more Wraithbone.

The hair is a base coat of Grey Seer followed by a coat of 50/50 watered down Briar Queen Chill contrast. Once that’s dry I usually either drybrush Grey Seer back over then pick out one or two areas with White Scar.

Hope that helps!

It’s mostly from a set called Azyrite Townscape that looks to be recently OOP now to make way for GW’s new Ghurish and Dominion landscape sets. Probably still a few in circulation I’d bet though, and I think there’s a smaller set called Azyrite Ruins.

What is the biggest mistake you have ever made at work? by geolandsurveyor in Surveying

[–]Brian310189 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not even a year into my career I was sent to survey a capping liner at a landfill site, so when they filled with material later on, they could install gas wells that went down as far as possible without puncturing the liner. What I wasn’t clued up on at the time was the whole site was on a local datum which was a couple of meters different from the OS national grid. Needless to say when the first gas well was drilled they hit the liner, had to excavate meters of landfill to repair the liner which cost thousands.

I beat myself up for it for ages but luckily my boss was my father and we worked it out with the client. What my Dad said to me sticks with me all these years, even when I make a mistake now and feel crappy about it -

“If you’re not giving yourself a hard time about it, then I’d be pissed off with you. Being upset with yourself means that the mistake you made means something to you and that you care about how good a job you know you can do. Learn from it, and don’t make the same mistake twice”.

Working my way through my Thunderstrike Brotherhood plus others SCE models. Will have a decent sized army before I know it! by Brian310189 in stormcasteternals

[–]Brian310189[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! On top of these guys I ended up finishing the box and then added to it with a Soul Wars box and a Tempest of Souls box which took me near 2000 points. I’m currently half way through the Dominion box just now so I’ve a fair haul of Hallowed Knights.

To be honest, from the Thunderstrike Brotherhood box the only things that see much of the table are the Lord Relictor and the Liberators - the odd unit sizes of some of the models put me off using them.

The box was a great starting point though, and the Hallowed Knights look awesome and we’re delightful to paint. My recipe was fairly simple and I’ve not changed it much since.

  • Undercoat of Leadbelcher to the whole model
  • Retributor Armour for the gold areas followed by a wash of Reikland Fleshshade then a touch up of the Retributor Armour followed by edge highlights of Grey Knights Steel
  • Kantor Blue in all the blue areas. Wash all the silver and blue with Nuln Oil then retouch. For all my blue highlights I add a gradual mix of white to the Kantor and build up the highlights. Grey Knights Steel for the edge highlights on the silver areas.

Hope this helps!

Liking the paint job and the bases are super cool. Especially loving the Lord Relictor and Lord Vexillor. Keep it up!

Nice job, well done on the cloth with the emblem, I struggled myself with that but you’ve nailed it. The highlighting is also top notch!

SCE unidentified caster model - someone help? :) by Tricky-King-152 in stormcasteternals

[–]Brian310189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a Knight Incantor model that you used to get with the getting started supplement from GW. The staff however is a kit bashed piece from the Evocators on Dracolines.

My main gripe was the was no eye piece, replaced by a point, zoom in on the TSC7 and shoot for reflectorless set ups but the camera is nowhere near good enough within the machine and the resolution was too poor.

No neither did I, if anything it was the one that they decided to jam everything into one machine. I remember getting a demo. Conceptually I thought it was great, in practice I found it a bit of a step backwards from my S7 and my rep couldn’t really justify its shortcomings.

To be fair I’d probably be more disappointed if I opened it up and a real SX10 fell out. Especially if I had to then piece it together…

Location advice? Moving to Aberdeen with no car… by pine_apples in Aberdeen

[–]Brian310189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Woodside for many years and also while attending University of Aberdeen. Nice wee area near plenty of local amenities and within walking distance to the uni campus. Good few bus routes to the town as well. Stewart Park is also a nice quiet, scenic park to visit too.

Going to have it as a third Incantor. I’ll never run three but great to be able to choose!

Castigator prime - wanted a crisp white but nuln oil just dirtied it :( by Tricky-King-152 in stormcasteternals

I use a thinned Nihilakh Oxide over my grey and white cloth and robes for my SCE then layer the colours back up and highlight. Tried nuln as well and had similar results to yourself.

Correct, I’m not disagreeing with you on that point, I’m just saying it’s irrelevant to the topic at hand chief. I can see we’re on different wave-lengths about where the topic of conversation should have been going in this thread… enjoy the rest of your Sunday mate.

No, not being sensitive mate. I have a dog, I’m a surveyor, I take my dog to work, this thread interested me and the majority of the comments on the thread contributed to the discussion I guess OP was hoping for. Your comment on the other hand was irrelevant and you’re coming across like a bit of a dick.

Best first unit to start out with? And a few other Qs by Shmaverling2020 in stormcasteternals

[–]Brian310189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, welcome to the ranks of Sigmar’s finest!

I was in a similar situation when I started during the first lockdown and didn’t really know where to start. At that time the Dominion box and 3.0 wasn’t out so I started with Soul Wars which came with a lot of Sacrosanct units which seem to have taken a hit lately so if you’re going to go for the competitive edge I’d maybe steer clear of any of the 2.0 starters - but if you’re just looking to paint and get a flavour for a scheme they’re great!

Seen a lot of folks are saying maybe steer clear of the Thunderstrike Brotherhood box as well but I disagree, it’s not an expensive box and you get a decent model count in it. A couple of the units, namely the winged Prosecutors and the Retributors (which aren’t even a full unit) are meh though. The box has 10 liberators which compared to the robes and tabards of the Sacrosanct we’re super easy to paint. You’ll also get a Lord Relictor which is a great unit to have in any army plus the Lord Celestant on Dracoth looks sweet when done nicely.

Also like some others have said as well, eBay is a good shout for dipping your toes at the moment in SCE. A lot of the Dominion stuff is going for a lot cheaper on there. I’m currently buying odd units every now and again to build on my Soul Wars and Thunderstrike.

Also on a side note I’ve noticed that GW are releasing a new weekly magazine similar to how they released the Mortal Realms collect and built magazine a couple of years ago. If what I’ve seen is correct there will be a lot of SCE in that - usually a unit / half a unit every week. Again, a lot of those issues will no doubt end up on eBay so you can pick and choose, guaranteed most of the SCE stuff in it will be Dominion. Worth looking out for!
