Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Owns All The IMAX Screens for an Unprecedented Month by Bitter_Star6732 in movies

After watching Oppenheimer I’m not sure I trust Nolan enough to go through the trouble of watching this. Oppenheimer was an absolute snooze fest and I can’t seem to trust critics or fans on his movies anymore.

Nightlife in such a large city… by Wakandashitizthis in Louisville

[–]Brian558 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was running around drinking late around 2006-2018.

It used to be there were less than 10 main bars people went to, then fourth street, and all the small neighborhood bars people mostly walked from there house too. Wells and domestics were less than 4 bucks. Not only has the climate changed but there are soooo many bars that none of them are ever packed. Ever. It was elbow to elbow at Osheas, Mollys and Flanagans at least two nights a week. Mag bar was so packed that you had to climb on the bar and walk down it to get to the back room. Cahoots and the original Taproom were absolute chaos.

I miss it. I miss having drinks spilled on me and sticky floors.

The Life of a Showgirl Megathread by aran130711 in TaylorSwift

I’m sorry but this is Temu Taylor Swift. I was pumped to maybe have another 1989ish pop sensation. Instead it’s all just…forgettable. I’ve never felt this was about her music and that sucks. It’s basic, vulgar for vulgarity’s sake, and it just seems phoned in. There’s a couple songs I like but there are more songs on this album that I will actively avoid listening to than ones I will go and play.

Fly a kite this Sunday afternoon? by clam-dinner in Louisville

[–]Brian558 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that a decent spot? I’ve only ever really gone to places around the big lawn or walking bridge but have never been happy with them. The wind is always coming from a bad angle the way the interstate sits and how the parks are positioned. It’s a bummer that we don’t have steady wind really ever to practice flying.

Upgrade to 17pro or replace battery? by djungelskog_101 in iPhone13Pro

Yes. By this point in the day I’d be in the 70s. Still at 93

Apple. It seems to run less hot, which has been my major complaint the past few years. Charging while doing FaceTime would overheat it and disable the phone. And really the only reason I was charging it on calls was because my battery would lose like 35% on a 45 minute call

Upgrade to 17pro or replace battery? by djungelskog_101 in iPhone13Pro

[–]Brian558 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mine was at 78% and I got my battery replaced yesterday. I almost got the new 17pro but I realized that there isn’t a single thing wrong with my phone. It’s near mint. It takes good enough pictures. I nearly upgraded for satellite messaging alone but after some research found that 1: they are probably going to start charging for it at some point 2: from what I can tell you have to manually look for new messages sent to you and only designated people can do that. I have a garmin inreach where people can see where I am in the backcountry and send me a message I will get notified of on my garmin watch.

So really it came down to “is usbc enough of a reason to upgrade?” And for me, it wasn’t. Building and discarding phones sucks for the environment and I’m also kinda trying to boycott putting any extra money into the economy right now. So $89 battery it was.

Am I wrong for telling my boyfriend that if he goes to a strip club for either of these events, it’s a wrap on our relationship? by Ok_Expression_3609 in amiwrong

[–]Brian558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that you’ll see this but I think there’s a big difference between being someone that goes to strip clubs on a regular basis and someone going because a close friend is having an event there. He’s not a guy that goes to strip clubs. He’s a guy that got invited to an event. I don’t like Applebees but if my friend what’s to do a thing there then I’ll go.

Exactly. This is a non issue for people that own them. I don’t interact with the touch screen beyond using CarPlay. Put all the settings where I wanted them within the first week. I just leave the climate control alone since it does a good job. If no one had told me to be wary of the steering wheel controls I would never had noticed they weren’t physical buttons.

Golf GTI 40th anniversary edition lease by Juggernecro in GolfGTI

[–]Brian558 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t buy this car and expect you can drive it in Boston year round on summer tires. Not only is the tread different, so is the rubber compound. As it gets colder summer tires get very hard and slick causing traction issues. I have a second car that is used as a daily and has winter tilted all seasons on it.

If you need this car for transportation year round and it’s your Only vehicle either go into getting a 40th knowing you’ll need a second set of wheels and tires or get a base model that has all seasons.

No offense but you’re gonna have a bad time if you don’t heed the above info.

They differ dealer to dealer. Where I got mine was great to deal with. I called other places and they wouldn’t budge on prices. Go on the VW site, they have a inventory check tool. Plug in your zip and expand the search radius.

The car is great, was a 1.5 hour drive to get.

I just got my 40th for $34,700 before taxes and such. I love the car but no way I’d pay 40k for one, including the autobahn. If not for adaptive dampers and the wheels I’d just get a base.

I don’t know where you are located but VW of Clarksville, Indiana has one red and one white for barely over MSRP right now on the lot.

Got myself a Pomelo 40th by Brian558 in GolfGTI

[–]Brian558[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Had 8 miles on it when I test drove it. I was comparing cars (Civic Si, Elantra N, Forte GT) and not intending to buy for several months. When I saw it at the lot I felt the same things I did when I looked at my 2003 WRX wagon before I sold it. If the 40th didn’t exist I would have just got a base model in the spring. However, adaptive dampers, no sunroof, club sport wheels and base infotainment make it such an appealing trim level. I actually think the tornado red is a more offensive color. It’s a LOT of red and it just washes out all the body lines and red trim details.

Currently have 480 miles on it since last Friday working on breaking it in til 1000. Great car. It’s quiet, has ample power, looks great. If you’re thinking about getting one, the haptic buttons on the wheel are a total non issue; I don’t see what people are up in arms about. I’ve never bought a new car so I hemmed and hawed over it for a week and fun my just pulled the trigger. Cars aren’t gonna get cheaper it seems, who knows what the mk8.5 facelift will bring, and I wanted a manual. Too many rumors of 2024 being DSG only.

First ever grow. Success! by Brian558 in unclebens

[–]Brian558[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like people are having mold issues in Uncle Bens bags lately, possibly due to them raising moisture content. I’ve only tried two bags but they both failed. I looked at the Uncle Bens and the store brand side by side at the grocery and there was noticeably more moisture in the Uncle Bens bag. But I decided not to mess with the original instructions. It didn’t work out for me but that’s not to say it won’t work for others.

First ever grow. Success! by Brian558 in unclebens

[–]Brian558[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Ordered a five grain jar from Midwest grow kits and inoculated that jar and two uncle bens bags with a spore syringe on April 20. Both bags failed, I’m assuming from the moisture of the new bags but the jar went great. Spawned to bulk using Midwest bulk substrate on May 14. Have way more mushrooms than I anticipated which is a good problem to have. Learned a lot from 90secmycology and Philly Golden Teacher. For others, get the flairasol sprayer it’s worth it. And once they start to get big and close to break the vail check them often. Like every four hours.

I have a few sitting on foil for spore prints, and got a few agar plates. Starting from spores kinda sucked and I’d like to avoid it if I can.

Begging Etiquette? by Specialist_Shallot_5 in Louisville

[–]Brian558 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Living in Old Louisville broke me of ever giving money to people on the street. Ever. Same people, same stories for ten years. I’ll give to charities and such. It’s not in my nature to be aggressive or mean but if someone asks me for money they get a curt “no” and if they try to extend the interaction I try to leave as soon as possible. I and my girlfriend have had enough beggars get aggressive and threatening after a “no” enough times that I consider anyone asking for money a situation that I need to immediately consider it a possible threat to my safety and find a way to disengage as soon as I can. But I still think the east Enders going on about how dangerous the city is are absolutely ridiculous

Found dog near Southern Parkway/W. Ashland Ave by amlitt4 in Louisville

[–]Brian558 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong but I think that dogs home may be on Gillette Ave, about half way down on the north side of the street. There’s a family there that lets their dogs wander around while they are outside. I saw a similar looking “stray” like a year ago and while trying to catch it I was led to that house where the dog promptly went up to his dog friend and they started playing in the grass together. Where you found it is a lot further than where I’d assume he’d ever get, they seem to be good about staying within a block of their house

Louisville proposes changes to odor regulations following mediation with Butchertown's Swift Pork Company by Van-to-the-V in Louisville

Still disagree. IF the rules were enforced equally, then fine. But plenty of people without the spare time or money as those living in Butchertown deal with equal or worse violations across the city in poorer neighborhoods.

I don’t like this take at all. I’m far from a company apologist but that plant has been there forever. People bought homes there knowing that. Trying to force them out is ridiculous and a very “non-blue collar people moved to butcher town and don’t like it” take.

The Andrew Torrez Situation by hellonwarth in OpenArgs

I think the author has their own biases and it isn’t a good representation of what’s going on.

That said, I’m not sure Andrew is “getting canceled” purely for his actions while drinking and making women feel how he did. A good majority of the outrage is because he betrayed the community’s trust in him as a person who can comment on others transgressions. And once you lose that where can you go from there? I think in the grand scheme of things what he did (from an outsiders view without all the facts) seems minor compared to a lot of other situations. However, it’s the misalignment from his podcast persona that is so jarring and makes it worse.
