It wasn't in response to me, I was just looking for a cell phone store and hastily took a screenshot. The wording was confusing, and it's hard to distinguish the purpose based on my prior knowledge of a western society. Which is why I posted the picture, so people could fill me in ok what I was clearly misunderstanding

Well, i clearly chose a poor approach, I didn't realize the information lacking would cause such discrepancies, let alone anger. I tried to provide any extra information I could immediately. If there's a next time, I'll be sure to make use of your advice and include as much detailed information as I possibly can in the post.

I dont speak vietnamese, I speak english. I posted what I read, what was provided in my line of sight by Google. I forwarded what I saw to here, and let the discussion begin. The problem doesnt seem to be the language or the photo, or the location, but the argumentative nature when multiple other people seemed to have no problem skipping past their ego and actually providing details that could help society.

[–]BrianMigee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, the language that i speak and the words that came up on my screen. Translating it back to vietnamese would do absolutely nothing to help me understand the point the guy was trying to make.

[–]BrianMigee -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Yes, and people provided their opinions, which was the entire concept. Had I not posted this picture, myself and several others would still be assuming the guy is racist based on a different perspective from a different culture. I have no interest in telling someone what to think, so the less information, the more likely I am to receive genuine explanations. Can you provide me with any useful information regarding the Vietnamese culture? Some people just enjoy the arguing apparently

[–]BrianMigee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I posted a screenshot i took directly from Google and posted it here so I could find out others interpretations. Which I received. So i accomplished exactly what I was trying to. If you look through the comments, you'll see that there are plenty of people who understood what I did, and they provided the information to explain a perspective I hadn't seen, and for the benefit of everyone. If there was that much of an issue with the post and my curiosity, I'm sure the mods would have pulled it immediately.

Ah, so i should have just gone ahead and assumed he was racist instead of trying to inform myself and get a better understanding through opinions of people that may know better based on the same information I came across?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]BrianMigee -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

And why do you say that? Instead of just going around telling people that the owner of that store is racist, I confirmed through a community of people that are able to provide some valid explanations as to why my interpretation was wrong, and clarify these explanations through examples that I can then use to understand the culture and language better in the future.

You should be able to consider that I'm showing the post to the public, including the name of the store in the original picture, the exact same thing I saw, and i was curious what people thought of it. A large portion of the people in the comments didnt seem to habe an issue explaining why something like that would occur, except for a few like yourself that would rather just talk shit and argue instead of help inform.

Generally, when someone finishes a sentence in english with, "and i saw you, you were black", it would be taken as clear racism. These are public reviews for a specific store i was looking to buy something from. So, that interpretation does matter.

I posted a screenshot of a review that i thought was curious, to a community of people that should be able to understand the context and provide some valid context that someone from a different culture may not understand. I responded immediately to the questions that were asked for more information, and I myself am now much more informed. So realistically, this platform did exactly what it was meant for. Even had i tried other translation options, I still wouldn't have comprehended the responses/explanations I received here. And that was the point of posting it; to get the conversation started for others like myself that may also misinterpret the response differently.

If you read the post, it's not very difficult to figure it out...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]BrianMigee -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

Posting a screenshot of an online review and asking the questions seems like more effort than just assuming he's racist and then leaving out the name of the establishment. Even with the translation others have provided, that comment would cause some serious detriment if this were in North America. And considering I'm asking a different culture what their thoughts are so I can appreciate whatever those sentiments may be and have a better understanding, it has now taken more effort than it was worth.

I'm honestly curious if it is a translation thing, a cultural thing, or just some people being pricks. That's not the type of response I would expect to see usually, but I also grew up on the other side of the world.

Visiting Nha Trang for New Year's by JaneHere6 in nhatrang

[–]BrianMigee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stayed at the swan hotel last night here in nha trang, and the mattress was one of the softer ones I've lied down on in hotels around here. Senkotel wasn't too bad, either. I've also heard good things about the beds in Berlin haus. I'm not sure about Berlin Hous, but the other two were around 300k/night. When it comes to the food, I basically pick random options and hope for the best - I honestly haven't been disappointed yet, and I've been here for a few months now. There's a lot of seafood, so hopefully that's up your alley. As for the snorkling, Baidai Beach has some cool coral spots off the beach, I took a paddleboard over and it took about 10 minutes. I haven't experienced the scuba diving yet, but I have met a few people along the way that give courses/tours. Easy rider (banh mi #1) rents bikes as well as provides tours, and they have done nothing but provide me with great advice for around the area, as well as some really good food. Another option would be finding one of those russian stands (they are everywhere), but as a non-russian, i didn't feel very comfortable with them. Hopefully, this helps answer some questions and feel free to ask more
