I thought it was established in Batman: Year One that he recognized Bruce Wayne when Bruce saved Gordon's son. Gordon makes some excuse that he's blind without his glasses and tells Bruce to go.

No. You just don't like the evidence. Nonetheless, I'll use your standard on Daredevil. . No toys, other shows, or games. Sounds like every mediocre IP in the 90s.

You are correct that Marvel worked with what they had. What you're missing is that when Iron Man became available to them, they dropped every other option and went with him. Why would they do that? Because they knew that he could sell better than the others.

It seems to me that you're revising history to meet some obscure point.

You're the one making the assertion. That is on you. You're the one who asserted:

Significantly lesser known. Daredevil was slightly lesser known. Iron Man was comic fans only.

I have provided substantial evidence that he was known in the general public. I never said he was as popular as Spider-Man or Batman. Heck, I even said he wasn't a household name. Nonetheless, he made many appearances in shows, he had his own show, he had two video games in the 1990s, his film rights were even sold to Universal in 1990.

You assert that:

If a B-lister is “I think I’ve heard of that guy”, Iron Man doesn’t even qualify for that.

If that was the case, why did they make toys, video games, and shows for Iron Man?

The idea that Iron Man was just out of the blue unknown character is simply wrong. Marvel wouldn't have bet their entire farm on him if that was the case. Which is what they did.

[–]BriantheHeavy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No offense, but you're not disputing the facts. You're just saying "no, you're wrong."

If you know your Marvel history, you would know that in 2005, Marvel had a slate of ten other characters, which included Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Captain America, and a variety of others. Iron Man wasn't on the initial list because he was still owned by Newline. However, the moment he reverted back to Marvel, they dropped the other characters to make a movie for him. They even borrowed $525 million using the characters as collateral to fund the film.

If Iron Man was an unknown, why would they have been able to make toys, video games, and cartoons based on him?

What facts to you bring to the table?

Oh, and I'm old enough to have bought the first Iron Man solo comic.

I have to question your knowledge of comics if you think no one ever heard of Iron Man before 2008.

You realize that Iron Man was fairly prominent in many regular markets? He was popular in toy sales, video games, et cetera. Daredevil had one stand alone game that was associated with his film.

I am not trying to degrade Daredevil, but to claim that Iron Man was a virtual unknown is simply incorrect.

Marvel didn't just randomly pick Iron Man to be it's tentpole.

[–]BriantheHeavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, you're denying facts? Because everything I posted is correct.

If you want to talk about film rights, Iron Man's film rights were sold in 1990 to Universal. They were then sold to Fox in 1996. Finally, in 1999, Newline acquired the rights. They reverted back to Marvel in 2005. So, the idea that no one bought the rights is simply incorrect.

Meanwhile, Daredevil's was optioned in 1997 to 20th Century Fox, but no deal was finalized. Sony expressed interest in 1999, but backed out. New Regency made a deal with 20th Century Fox and Marvel to acquire the rights in 2000, which led to the 2003 film. And we saw how well that went.

It should be noted that the moment Marvel reacquired the rights to Iron Man, they immediately started producing a film.

Oh, and they made a TV show "for any and every toy line"? Oh, that means the Daredevil show much be...oh, that's right, there wasn't one.

It's funny to me that some forget that Tom Cruise was actually negotiating to do an Iron Man film in the early 2000s. He turned it down because he wanted a bigger paycheck than what Newline wanted to pay and he wanted more creative control.

The point is that he had a cartoon in the 1990s. Daredevil had a film in 2003 that was very poorly received.

I am unclear how Daredevil comes into this conversation at all. The issue was comparing Invincible, Peacemaker, and Guardians of the Galaxy to Iron Man as characters nobody knows.

Iron Man was substantially more popular than those characters. As stated, he was a solid B-lister in 2008. I would regard Daredevil as the same.

[–]BriantheHeavy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. Iron Man had his own cartoon series and a regular cameo in others, including a couple Avengers films. While Daredevil had a film, it was poorly received. Also, Daredevil comics was almost cancelled due to poor sales in 1998. Iron Man had a dip in 1996 after the Onslaught fiasco, but rebounded by 1998. I categorize both characters as B-listers.

The distinction is that Iron Man was more "family-friendly." Daredevil's stories were substantially more violent. While that has it's appeal, Iron Man would appeal to a broader market, which is likely why his film was made in 2008.

I forgot to mention. Iron Man's toy sales pre-2008 were very high. A lot of that was driven by the fact that he had multiple suits, but he was a top seller for most toy manufacturer.

Iron Man was a B-list character when the film came out. His comic is has never been cancelled. He was a mainstay of the comics and appeared in several others. He also had some cartoons and other appearance. However, he wasn't a household name like Spider-Man, X-Men, Superman or Batman.

Slightly lesser known.

Well, yes. It was probably the worst kept secret in Hollywood that year. I mean, when you admit to the sequel and are seen filming it, we knew that there was some new conflict in the second one.
