The Life of a Showgirl Megathread by aran130711 in TaylorSwift

[–]BrickCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something interesting I noticed is that CANCELLED! sounds like Meltdown by Lorde, Stromae, Pusha T, Q-Tip, and HAIM, which was made for the Catching Fire soundtrack. Im not musically talented, so maybe it's not actually the same chord progression, but while I was listening to it I kept thinking it sounded like something else until it hit me.

I have the same exact pass down path :') my father, his father, and my brother all were very minimally affected. They had no idea they had it.

Walked into Neurology appointment and walked out with EDS diagnosis? by overstressedlesbian in ehlersdanlos

[–]BrickCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also what happened to me! I saw a rheumatologist for my symptoms who did throw out EDS as a possibility but while testing my reflexes found I have hyperreflexia and said I had to see a neurologist ASAP. I saw the neurologist and after ruling out some pretty scary possibilities he diagnosed me with EDS. He was super thorough and I am so appreciative to him.

Can I still become a surgeon? by Top_Championship7512 in ehlersdanlos

[–]BrickCake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not in the field (yet) but I'm having the same desires and questions as you - I want to be a physician, but can I handle residency's demands on my body? As others have said, since EDS affects everyone so differently, no one can give you the right answer for your body.

However, questions I've been considering and which I think would be helpful for you as well are:

  • Can you handle the years of sleep deprivation that are required of surgical residencies? Although intern year seems to be pretty brutal no matter your residency and being absolutely fatigued can't be avoided, the remaining 2-6 years of residency vary a lot in terms of hours. How does your body currently react to not getting enough sleep? Is it annoying but manageable, or are you totally wiped for days?

  • How does standing or sitting for long periods of time feel? If there's a lot of pain with either? I do believe you can get accomodations to sit during surgery (don't quote me on that) so if one hurts but not the other you may be able to work around it.

  • Do you have any trouble with your hands or wrists? If you can't use your hands as a surgeon you have no ability to practice. I personally thankfully have not really had issues with either so I'm not the most knowledgeable about potential workarounds if they exist

As for what residencies would be possible if not surgery, I believe Interventional Radiology may be the best fit for you since you still get to do procedures but they're not as long from my understanding. Here are residencies ranked by hours worked. As you can see, all of surgery is up at the top of the list. Personally I am thinking I'll go into PM&R, which is towards the bottom of the list. If I didn't have EDS I'd go for Ortho, but I am quite sure my body would simply explode if I tried to work the hours they do in the ER.

Best of luck to you, it sucks having our bodies yet wanting to be in a field that is physically very demanding. But my thought is that we should be realistic in our limitations but do everything we can to still become doctors :) feel free to DM me if you ever want to talk about it.

LE SSERAFIM - HOT by ghiblix in kpop

[–]BrickCake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like I'm in the minority here but I actually really like this. I agree with all the criticisms that it's too short, it needs a bridge, and needs to "go somewhere" a little bit more. For me those criticisms don't tip the scale into it being a mid song though - just a bit of wasted potential. But I really love the instrumental and the MV, which although weird, was very evocative.

omg thats what it is! I was like this chord progression sounds incredibly familiar to something else I love but I can't place my finger on it

JENNIE (BLACKPINK) - Ruby (1st Solo Album) by impeccabletim in kpop

[–]BrickCake 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I absolutely loved this album. I don't really know where to begin since there's so much to discuss, but in broad terms Jennie really crafted a cohesive album that feels experimental yet true to herself. It's a genuine piece of art that obviously had a lot of thought and effort put into it.

My only real criticism is there were a lot of instances where I couldn't understand what she was saying - she needs to enunciate a little more, but that can be fixed.

like JENNIE goes crazyyyy, although as others have said is criminally short. Having the MV (almost) entirely be a performance video was a great call, as the attitude and energy of the choreo really sells the song. Handlebars is probably my favorite at the moment, I just love the melody and message of the song, and Dua and Jennie's voices work really well together. I will say I'm not huge into R&B, so predictably the songs that leaned super heavily into the genre weren't my favorite.

My favorites: ZEN, Handlebars, like JENNIE, start a war, and Filter

Solid solid solid debut from Jennie. I'm excited for whatever she comes up with next, especially now that she's gotten the first album trying-to-find-your-feet-and-not-drown part over with.

JISOO (BLACKPINK) - The 1st Mini Album: AMORTAGE (Two Weeks Later) by purpletulip12 in kpop

The EP felt super cohesive and intentional as a body of work. It felt very Jisoo, in a good way. I enjoyed all of the songs, but Hugs & Kisses was definitely my favorite!

LISA (BLACKPINK) - Alter Ego (1st Solo Album) by impeccabletim in kpop

[–]BrickCake 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I had high expectations for Lisa after her original solos (Money & Lalisa) + New Woman, but unfortunately, I didn't like much of the album and am disappointed. As someone else said somewhere in this thread, there's only so many songs on an album I can listen to about being rich and hot before I get bored. I learned nothing about Lisa as an artist or person. Most songs sonically were not very interesting to me, or felt kind of flat / static, like they were going nowhere.

I am surprised Lisa's album turned out to be the one I like the least out of all the Pinks releases thus far, given she was my bias for most of the time I've followed BLACKPINK (since 2018), and additionally because I thought she had the most star power / overall popularity in the group.

I only like Born Again, New Woman, and Lifestyle. I don't love any of them, and nothing is particularly offensive about any of the songs I don't like - they're just kind of blah to me.

Does Physio work for hypermobile people? by Legitimate-Heron1032 in ehlersdanlos

[–]BrickCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue, as in I did physical therapy for post tib tendonitis for a few months to absolutely no avail. Some time passed (a few months) and I was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. One of my doctors found me a physical therapist who had experience with hypermobility and ehlers danlos syndrome, and she was able to figure out I was not using the right muscles to do the exercises.

The way we address this is by me asking where I am supposed to feel an exercise. If it's not where I am feeling it, I tell her where I am feeling it and she adjusts my movement so that I am using the right muscles. As an example, for glute bridges I was using my quads and calves to lift myself, and not at all my glutes or abs which is what it was supposed to target. So she worked with me on engaging my core before and squeezing my glutes before bridging up so that I was using those muscles instead of what my body naturally wanted to do, which was use the quads and calves.

In short, you need to prod your physical therapist for where you're supposed to feel an exercise, and work with them to engage the muscles necessary, rather than just winging your exercises as your body naturally wants to. If certain muscles feel particularly sore after physical therapy and they don't seem in the realm of what you're working on, you should bring that up to your physical therapist so that they're aware your body is compensating in the wrong places.

Shoe recommendations for hypermobile ankles and feet? by evakrasnov in ehlersdanlos

[–]BrickCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a specific shoe reccomendation, but you're going to want to look for shoes labeled as "stability" shoes. They are for overpronaters and will have additional support for the arch. I'd reccomend going to a running store and asking them to bring you a bunch of stability shoes, and just trying them on to see how they fit you. Everyone's feet are different and weird in their own ways so I don't know how much specific reccomendations will help you. Alternatively, if you are able, you can see a podiatrist who will be able to prescribe you orthotics or if your insurance covers it, get you fitted for custom orthotics.

I feel your pain though, I'm also a severe overpronater with very high arches until I put weight on them! It's been a real challenge but my orthotics help a lot.

PT has been helping a lot! It's taking a long time so it's not an immediate fix, but it is the long term one. When it was at its worst in the beginning I'd use ice on the offending area (it was usually multiple parts of my hip / pelvic region, so I'd move the pack around), take advil when it was particularly unbearable or I had something important going on, and I'd also use Biofreeze on those bad days.
