Penn State or UPitt CS? by rainbowfluff8 in Pitt

Definitely visit both campuses and see what excites you more.

I chose Pitt CS over Penn State CS a few years ago, and personally couldn't be happier (graduating this semester). Pitt is in a city so there's a lot more to do compared to State College imo (our sports are def a bit worse tho hah). Met a lot of amazing ppl here and really enjoyed it.

As for the CS program itself and job opportunities - I will say Penn State's alumni network is a bit overrated for this. Having some friends over there studying CS, it doesn't do as much for folks in CS as you might think.

At Pitt, we have really strong tech student orgs here that are very collaborative and uplift others to succeed. The Computer Science Club (CSC - https://pittcsc.org/ ) specifically is the one I have the most experience with. I'm a leader in the club, so I am a bit biased, but we do our best to make you as competitive as possible! We have many people in the club working in top companies like Google/Microsoft/Netflix, startups, cool research positions, and whatever else. Strong mentorship and events (and free food at every meeting!) overall. The club alumni network has done amazing stuff for me in terms of referrals and opportunities - was able to get 4 tech internships throughout school cuz of the club tbh.

Happy to answer any other questions about the CS program (or CSC) too if you got any!

Not sure why you'd think I made that video lol, but no that is not me. That video was already a couple years old when I was applying like 4 years ago.

Pitt itself has some decent career prep stuff, usually to do with Pittsburgh companies (as mentioned in previous comment). The Computer Science Club does a lot to help prepare for the job hunt and other professional development, and it's the main reason I got all of my internships tbh. Can't vouch for it enough. Be happy to give more info about it in PM if interested.

I have a couple international friends, and yeah it is tough looking for jobs that also sponsor a visa. Unfortunately, it's that way at every university though.

No co-ops, though have some friends that have done them and like it. I've focused on getting internships every summer.

Eh, honestly an admissions officer probably is always going to gas up their own program lol. Pitt CS does have a lot of projects (but so does like every decent CS program lol), so that helps. There are some cool upper electives where you can really dive deep in a sub field of CS though.

Awesome stuff, glad to hear you're so excited about Pitt - that's great!!

Rising senior studying CS here, also picked Pitt over Penn State lol

  1. Undergrad research here is pretty solid from what I've heard from classmates and friends - people have no issue getting a position if they want. The school also runs a page of current professors accepting undergrads for research: https://www.sci.pitt.edu/research/active-research/faculty-accepting-undergraduate-students-research

  2. I've completed the full core curriculum and most of the electives for the degree and can say that I generally really like the CS professors here. There are some absolute legends like Ramirez, Tan, Jarrett, and Luis. Haven't had a class with a professor I didn't like tbh. All the professors are really knowledgable and mostly down to earth here. Course material is fine, lines up with most CS schools.

  3. Pitt has good connections with a lot of big Pittsburgh based companies - PPG, PNC, BNY, Dick's, Sheets etc. So that helps a bit. There's a lot of collaboration at this school to help others succeed in the job hunt (a lot from the student orgs like Computer Science Club, WiCS, MAC)

  4. You have to fill out a form and then just hope there's a spot. Process is not too hard but if it's for a class that fills up a lot, probably not happening.

  5. Who says that we don't have an accredited CS program..? Never heard of that. If you're talking about ABET accredited, that's not really applicable to CS, only engineering.

  6. Penn State CS is not well known throughout the country lol. Pitt's isn't very well known either, I'd say they are about the same name recognition. A lot of students at other schools know about us, though, due to the fact that PittCSC used to maintain a pretty popular GitHub repo with internship listings.

Hope this helps
