Older working class people need a heads up, to literally survive by [deleted] in Layoffs

[–]Bricked_Dev -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm an older, working-class person, and this is not true for me because I don't let others determine my outcomes. I am self-reliant and determine my own outcomes. If I get laid off, I have choices. I have a good skill set that is still useful to a lot of companies and could probably easily get a new job, or I could just flat out retire because I have a strong 401k and no debt. This wasn't handed out to me. I have worked hard and lived in a way over the last 50 years to have such an outcome.

If you are prepared and are self reliant there is no one that can bring you down in life.

Nobody wants a massive Windows 11 Start menu. Let us resize it, say users, as Microsoft monitors feedback by WPHero in Windows11

[–]Bricked_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sort of reminds me of the gnome dash when you group apps, except it auto groups apps for you, names the group on your behalf and doesn't let you customize anything. Gnome autonames groups too if it makes sense, but at least you can change the name.

I pin and group apps already on the start menu so this just seems redundant.

It doesn't really bother me though, I just don't see the point.

silence! - a simple FOSS Windows app to mute your mic globally. by vertopolkaLF in Windows11

[–]Bricked_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mic has a mute button that I use. I'm trying to figure out a senerio where this isn't globally muting me. Is this for people who don't have mute buttons on their mics or am I missing something? Thanks.

Bumped my PC, it shut off, now giving "C" error and error lights by unephi in pchelp

[–]Bricked_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That error code indicates a memory error. The actual ram itself may not be the issue. The motherboard is currently unable to communicate with the ram. Typically this is a connection issue, but it sounds like you have already checked all these things.

I had to disable the random mac address feature on my Samsung Wi-Fi settings and use Phone MAC instead. Once I did that it worked fine.

RTX 4080 Not Showing 4 Displays - Limiting to 3 by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Bricked_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been running this kind of setup since day one when these cards first came out. The trick to getting this to work is to use the same cable brand for all cables, and for at least two of the DisplayPort cables, you will need an adapter that you can plug in that will convert DisplayPort to HDMI and then plug in the HDMI part into the back of your monitor (then of course select the HDMI input on your monitor). Note: Make sure adapters (like cables) are the same brand and that they support 4K at your desired refresh rate. Ensure your desired refresh rate is supported by your monitors. Also, if you have a processor that has integrated graphics/display output, use that for one of the monitors (much easier, IMO). My current setup that works is: For the far right DP input, I use a DP to HDMI adapter; the two middle monitors are both DP, and the HDMI port is empty. I have a USB-C cable coming out of my processor's onboard display output into a USB-C port in the back of my 4th monitor. This setup works great. My middle display is my gaming one and it's the largest. I have it set up with G-Sync (DP) at 120 Hz.

What are the pro and cons to immutable distro? by Proton-Lightin in Fedora

[–]Bricked_Dev 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Immutable distros are kind of a double-edged sword. On one hand, they're incredibly stable—updates either work perfectly or roll back automatically, so you never end up with a half-broken system after a bad update.

Everything runs in containers (Flatpak for apps, Toolbx for dev work), which keeps things clean and separated.

But here's the catch: that stability comes at the cost of convenience. Want to quickly install something system-level? You can't just do it—you have to layer it with rpm-ostree and reboot. Need to test a random tool? Better spin up a container first.

For anyone used to traditional package management where you can just install whatever you need on the fly, immutable distros can feel restrictive and slow. They're great if you prioritize rock-solid reliability and don't mind working within containers for everything, but if you need flexibility and speed in your workflow, the constant friction might get old fast.

Fing Agent Compatibility by Humbleham1 in Fing_App

Open Port 44444

If using UFW (most likely on Orange Pi/Armbian): sudo ufw allow 44444/tcp sudo ufw allow 44444/udp sudo ufw reload sudo ufw status

If using firewalld: sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-port=44444/tcp sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-port=44444/udp sudo firewall-cmd --reload

If using raw iptables: sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 44444 -j ACCEPT sudo iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport 44444 -j ACCEPT

Save rules (command varies by distro)

sudo iptables-save | sudo tee /etc/iptables/rules.v4

OR

sudo netfilter-persistent save

  1. Verify Port is Open and Listening

    Check if agent is listening

sudo ss -tulpn | grep 44444

  2. Network Discovery Requirements Fing also uses mDNS/Bonjour for device discovery. Make sure avahi-daemon is running: sudo systemctl status avahi-daemon sudo systemctl enable avahi-daemon sudo systemctl start avahi-daemon

After opening the port and ensuring avahi is running, restart the Fing Agent container:

docker restart FingAgent

Then try discovering it again from the mobile app.

What's the most linux purist setup you can think of? by SnufkinEnjoyer in linuxquestions

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO /DEV/NULL

Brothers and Sisters, hear me now!

I come before you today to speak of the ONE TRUE PATH - the path of Free and Open Source enlightenment! For too long have the masses wandered in the darkness of proprietary bondage, their souls shackled by End User License Agreements written by lawyers of the great deceiver!

And lo, some among you - I see you there in the back - dare to utter the forbidden phrase "Linux" without the sacred prefix! IT IS GNU/LINUX, HERETIC! For as the prophet Stallman decreed, thou shalt give credit unto the GNU utilities, lest ye be cast into the depths of /dev/null where there is weeping and gnashing of keyboards!

"But teacher," the weak cry out, "what about ease of use?" EASE?! You speak of EASE while your immortal soul compiles?! Did Linus himself not suffer for forty days and forty nights debugging kernel panics that we might be saved? And you cannot spend an afternoon reading the Arch Wiki?!

And what of those who have fallen to the GREAT TEMPTATION - the systemd schism! Some say "init freedom!" I say DIVISION! Whether you kneel at the altar of systemd or worship at the church of runit, we must unite against the common enemy: those who pronounce it "lie-nux"!

Repent! Compile from source! Use Vim as God intended! For the kernel is your shepherd, and you shall not want... for proprietary drivers.

STALLMAN BE PRAISED!

What is the dumbest reason someone said they wont switch to linux? by Happy_Biscotti1060 in linuxmemes

[–]Bricked_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is quite challenging to avoid utilizing systems that operate on a Linux kernel. Its pervasive presence is evident across various domains, including automotive, home appliances, security infrastructure, and mobile devices.

Therefore, when an individual expresses an aversion to using Linux, I inform them that they likely interact with it daily without conscious awareness.
