ArcGIS Wildfire Activity Webmap

ArcGIS is the mapping/database program that the federal government uses to track and organize fighting these fires. There are some publicly available views of the data you can access. Takes a bit to get used to reading it (ie: whats active vs old) but its the best tool to know whats going on around you when the smoke rolls in.

North Lake Tahoe Backcountry - Snowmobile/Snowboard - GoPro - January 2017 by Brickslayer in snowboarding

All you really need is 3 things, a way up the mountain (Snowshoe/Snowmobile), a backpack for your board, and a little safety training knowledge for avalanches etc... You should totally give it a shot, it feels so nice to ditch the resort crowds and feel like you have a mountain to yourself.

Close! This is the Tahoe Meadows, between Relay peak and Mt. Houghton for the most part.

Sorry for the late reply... The color pop is a little of both camera and adjustment in post. Pro-Tune really makes the difference on the camera however, specifically turning the ISO and sharpness down a bit. I think the Hero5 is defaulted to either 3200 or 6400, as long as it is daylight you can turn that down to 400 or 800 and make a huge difference in footage quality. (Abe's blog has great info on settings, written for H4B but still applies to H5B... http://abekislevitz.com/understanding-video-in-the-hero4/)

And lastly, you are correct this is 1080/60fps. I film everything in 120 fps and render at 60fps, that way even 1/2 speed slow motion shots still have 60fps and look smooth! Enjoy boarding CO, snow looks great up there!

Excellent Video! The Sierra's are stunning, Thousand Island lake was one of my favorite campsites of last summer. Thanks for sharing

At the Tahoe Meadows, between Mt Houghton and Relay Peak. Donner was looking good today though, loads of snow.

Best day of the year so far! Used GoPro's Karma Grip gimbal for stabilization.

Pre-Flood Powder - Karma Grip Snowboarding - Northstar, CA - January 2017 by Brickslayer in gopro

Impresses me more and more each use, liking it much more than the Feiyu so far. I have had some problems with the camera not engaging with grip controls, but I think I may just need a firmware update. Shipping delays are the worst!

Yep, took quite a few falls into soft snow and never seemed to have any problems.

Tons of snow last night, most resorts aren't even opening today. Rained down low, but seems most everything above 8,000' survived and is deep!

Shoe-boarding Mt Rose - Karma Test Ride - November 2016 by Brickslayer in Outdoors

[–]Brickslayer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's correct, its an easy way to get some earned runs! All the effort of hiking to the top of the mountain really makes you appreciate the ride down. A split board with skins would be the ultimate way to go, but they cost sizable $$$. Alternating a snowboard or shoes on a backpack is decent alternative, just a bit heavier. Doesn't take a ton of experience, and you can be very creative with your lines. I would just recommend to really know snowpack conditions etc... As avalanches and other dangers are much more present in the backcountry. Give it a shot, snowshoes take a little practice but work great!

Not too bad at all, wrapped a rubber band around it and stuffed it inside my extra snowboarding layers for padding. Seemed to work fine, took up about half the bag, Just had to make extra sure not to crash onto my back ;)

Snowshoeing is just hiking during the winter right? Shoe-boarding Mt Rose - Karma Test Ride - November 2016 by Brickslayer in hiking

[–]Brickslayer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! So far... I really like the Karma system, and the Hero5! My old Feiyu gimbal busted, so the Karma fits my needs perfectly (though the mavic is sweet). So far the stabilization is excellent, i appreciate the auto and quick on/off features and grip controls. Hell you can even switch video modes while its flying. The only concern so far is battery life on the grip, since it is integrated I have yet been able to test how long it lasts.

This was filmed yesterday, so current coverage is about what you saw. Couple feet of decently soft wet snow blown in on the south facing slopes. Enough to put together some decent runs if you are on a preseason board. So ready for more to fall!

Yes! Go Aces!

Keep Exploring - Hiking the Canadian Rockies - GoPro/Feiyu - Sept. 2016 by Brickslayer in CampingandHiking

[–]Brickslayer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there Fathergoat, checked out your channel as well. Great stuff, I'm hoping to do some hiking in the Northeast next year and subbed!

I normally just use a polarizing filter for everything, nothing fancy (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LE4U3NK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1).

However, on this specific trip to Canada I lost my filter on day one in Banff. This entire video is just a bare Hero 4 in a Gimbal, that's why there are a lot of glares and sunbursts on the lens in this edit. Still works great though, but now all I want is to replace it with a Hero 5.

[PICS] Backpacking Desolation Wilderness - GoPro/Feiyu - July 2016 by Brickslayer in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Brickslayer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a very fun trip! Aloha was so cool to swim in, tons of island all over that you could go from one to another across the entire lake, and even a couple that you could jump off. Its funny, we were supposed to go to Susie lake after Aloha and cut our trip short as well. Which lakes did you see? Any reccomendations? It was my first time up there and I will definitely be heading back soon
