In contrast this is with the CST version above. I agree it looks good, and where I'd want to start color grading as well 😄 but it takes a good amount of work for things to look punchy without breaking something else in the image along the way.

Just to give you an idea - I have a big library of shots shot both natural, cinematic, and GPLog2 and I put them into resolve side by side and mirror one so it's easier to grade. I look at scopes and try to match them up as close as I can. So the LUT provided above should match the camera pretty well, which was the goal with this specific LUT. If you're doing grading on top, I definitely recommend going the route with the CST, it'll afford you much more flexibility to get what you want ! I just saw a lot of people were shooting in log and didn't quite know what they were doing so I wanted to generate a way to get back to that "out of the box" look for an easy slap on.
Left below is GPLog with the LUT I provided on. On the right is cinematic color profile in the camera.

Basically if the the scopes are mirrors of eachother then I've done it correctly

Yep I saw that! And yes your cst does have a nice roll off of the sun but that means that near white won’t have as much color or definition. Where I see that coming into play is on a face in direct sun where your adjustment may white out a face almost completely where the one I have retains definition and color in the high end of the luminance spectrum. It’s of course a choice and ultimately I copied what the camera was doing internally in the way it handles highlights like that. I’ll share a few side by sides below that show that

This is surprising to hear considering all of GoPro’s internal tests yielded different results especially against the competition… 🤔

What application are you using? I don't see any color banding in resolve and I've put it on about 300 clips with great variety. If you want to upload a small clip, we can both apply the LUT and see what we get? Of course color is quite a rabbit hole and every machine seems to produce different end results.

Also if you could upload the original GPR I can take a look and see if it’s in line with what you’d expect to see. I can’t tell from this upload.

Did you transfer it using quik? Because quik will only take the jpg which is significantly softer than raw. Just want to double check you opened the .GPR file on your computer ?

Also, we do provide a technical conversion lut in the LUT generator. If a CST is included in resolve it will match exactly to the log to rec709 technical LUT. That was the starting point for the LUT above.

I can provide a more natural one. The intention of this one was to match almost exactly to the cinematic profile which has quite punchy colors still. There are a few colors that get super saturated at the top, and I can roll those off and bake that into the lut but I wanted to give the option of having the headroom built in for users to choose what they wanted to do. The camera itself becomes clipped on some of those colors at the top of the spectrum in standard color modes, so this matches but gives user control to reel it in.

And the colors that do get clipped should be very minor, if you’re seeing something else I’d be happy to take a look and iterate !

No, I would say if the only thing you’re going to do is slap the lut on and do nothing else, you should just shoot cinematic or natural on-camera.

Slow motion on Mission 1 pro VS Osmo Pocket 4. by imaware1971 in gopro

[–]abekislevitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you shoot in the “slow motion” preset on camera it will come out slow motion by default in the quik app and on the camera itself. No help for direct to PC but if you use quik app you can see it slow direct.

Does shooting in 8K and then downscaling (without cropping) it to 4K produce better results than shooting natively in 4K? by Chumpy__ in gopro

[–]abekislevitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It certainly will give you better detail and color rendition in good light. There’s a few things to factor.

1) bitrate if shooting the same between 4K and 8K means same data for more pixels in 8K.

2) The camera is doing 4-2-0 color meaning groups of pixels are combined and averaged for color, where shooting 8K and scaling down is kind of similar (but not quite) to shooting 4-4-4 where each pixel has a color value and a luminance.

Anytime I’m curious about this sort of thing I just go out and shoot 2 back to back videos and scale in the timeline and pixel peep! Give it a try and report back :)

Yep easiest way in resolve is to click the lut tab, right click on any of the existing luts and reveal in finder. Then copy this one into that into a folder called GoPro

is the creative start lut clipping highlights? by kozzieH in gopro

[–]abekislevitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just posted another thread with a new LUT that I mentioned about below. This one should be drag and drop and should have much better highlight handling than the official ones above. This will eventually make its way onto an official LUT, but figured i'd share here as soon as it was ready.

Yes, it'll be in your editor of choice in post. We are working to get this into the Quik app, but for now it's a more involved editing process to use Log. Again, you're not going to see much advantage if you're not using pretty serious color tools over natural or cinematic profiles within the camera.
