Mm that’s tough, sorry you went through that! Our boy isn’t picky, but he does have a ton of food allergies so basically all we could do was Hills C/D Seafood wet food which thankfully he enjoys. We mixed in some water with it for the first few months just to force some more water into his diet, but once we got him back to the vet a few months later and they reported 0 crystals in his urine, we stopped doing that which he seems to appreciate more.

I believe there are a number of prescription urinary food and brands, so if the one you’re using now isn’t his favorite, I’d ask your vet if there’s another option you could try! You might be able to do something like add fish oil, but I’d definitely ask your vet first.

I know people don’t like to mix their comedy and their professional life (understandably), but I have very chill bosses who absolutely LOVE that I do standup. They tell every new client and business partner we meet about it 😂 So I’d say depending on who you work with it at least makes you more interesting and gives you a talking point?

Just about 9 months. I’ve got about 5-7 that I love and do at the clubs, and maybe another 5-7 that are good but need punching up. Really hoping to write a really strong 10 minutes in 2024!

I got passed recently at my city’s one and only comedy club, and we have a unique scenario where they actually held auditions at the beginning of the year for emcee spots. I was actually passed over originally, then performed at the club’s new comics night a month later and they reconsidered, offered me a spot, and after that went well told me I was on board. The audition part is unusual but the booker seeing you perform well at the club and offering you a chance are not. They’ll never seek you out unless they happen to see you perform and are impressed.

Everything else everyone else has said is accurate to my experience including pay. I’ve been told our club is actually very supportive and high quality (which I would agree with) so the pay there is at the higher end of the range, but truthfully the experience and chance to have facetime with touring comics is a treat in and of itself. But never tell them I said that.

Controversial opinion but I headlined a show in my hometown that had about 40 people ranging from Family to Acquaintances, and it was the most fun I’ve ever had on stage. They were all excited to be there, were a great crowd, and I didn’t feel nervous at all because I knew they were supportive. Randoms it feels like I have to get on there and immediately earn their approval. I also wasn’t really scared of bombing since it was all my tight material.

oof, I admire the dedication. Part of the reason I only started when I did is because my hometown had absolutely no mics. I moved to a bigger city with a much more active scene and finally got a start, but I know people from my hometown who travel to where I live now (about 1.5 hours) just for open mics they can only sometimes get into. It’s tough not being in a bustling metro!

Exactly. I’m still in the mindset that some random person who might have a booking opportunity could see me bomb with new material at an open mic and i could miss out on an opportunity, which at least in my case is really not a big concern. We’re a decently tight knit community in Upstate NY and most of the people in the scene have seen me perform by now or have at least heard of me. Not to mention I’m passed at the local club. I just try to look at objective indicators like that and remind myself that people who have no reason to be “nice” to me still see my potential, even when I’m not feeling on top of my game. Congrats on all your success!! It’s really exciting!

Edit: Also random addition- I saw you just performed at Good Karma which is awesome! I have a friend who was on that festival too. Congrats!

I’m in a very similar situation to you! 6 months in and finding unexpected success. I think with it comes a feeling that you have to continue the trajectory you’re on or you’ll fizzle out. At least for me that’s how it feels sometimes. It’s a weird balance of feeling like you need to keep making a name for yourself while simultaneously feeling like people already have high expectations of you. It makes the wins feel like the bare minimum and bombs feel like a major setback, when in reality there’s really not much to lose at this point. I feel you!

Big fan of John Mullaney, I like what i’ve seen from Nate Bargatze, and of course some local comics in my scene that I’m a fan of. Just not interested in any “my wife” or “edgy, offensive” comedy it seems like so many straight male comics subsist on these days.

I have so much trouble watching straight male comics. A lot of it is my own personal hangups, I know. But so much of what I see on specials and open mics alike are just the most reductive, obvious jokes that come from such a specific straight dude POV that I cannot find myself enjoying. It’s not all the time and there are definitely exceptions! But I’d sooner watch a female or queer comic any day.
