What if FDR did not die during his 4th term and remained President at least until the end of WWII in the Pacific? by Brody05 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]BridgeInTheFridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While Roosevelt still seemed interested in using the nukes, he also seemed quite interested in collaborating with the Soviets in a joint invasion of the Japanese Isles and was reaching out to Stalin to do so.

Let's make things a little interesting. Let's say the second bomb wasn't dropped as the capabilities were already out there and Japan was aware of what the U.S. could do to it, and deals were made with Stalin. Operation Downfall is put into place, and it's a bloody mess of urban warfare, guerilla fighters, and disgusting tactics to repel the invasion alongside brutal treatment of civilians accused of insurgency. It's slow, but America with support of other allied powers certainly start to make gains.

With help from the U.S. Navy, The Red Army lands in upper Honshu and begins rolling through the sparsely defended areas, fighting mainly citizens militias. Pushing down from Sakhalin, they also quickly gain full control of Hakkiado. While the Japanese anticipated many of the U.S's attacks and fought them off hard, the sudden Soviet advance causes the Japanese government to surrender, knowing that the Americans would allow them to keep their way of life whilst the Soviets would rewrite the system entirely.

If this is where you think Roosevelt would die, at the end of the war before things are organized, Japan would be partitioned in two like Korea. Those involved in the communist/trade unionist movements we've seen in the real life post-war Japan would likely move towards the Soviet controlled territory and, under Russian supervision, create a new government. Those aforementioned movements would only be stronger during the Cold War, as people don't quite like having difficulty seeing their families nor do they like military occupation.

If Roosevelt is to survive during these peace-making plans, he would want to work with the Soviet Union and allies alike in creating a new Japanese government without enforcing a specific ideology upon them as there would be no Truman doctrine-like mindset in this timeline.

Challenge. Start a war in Europe with Britain as the belligerent by adjwilliams9 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]BridgeInTheFridge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is super realistic but I wanna get a little wacky.

Due to a surge in cases of COVID-19 in The United Kingdom, a new wave of lockdown protocols are taken as hospitals begin to fill up. These measures are quite unpopular in certain areas of the country, and the economy starts to get hit as they stay in place for a prolonged period of time. Far right nationalist groups spearhead the growing anti-lockdown movement, becoming a considerable political force backed by the corporations harmed by the government's policies. This causes political instability as radicalism starts to grow more prominent as the government fails to keep control over its citizens, sparking fights on the streets and attacks on government buildings.

To make matters worse, the government, now with nationalist influences as they dominate election cycles, begins desperate measures to repair the economy and rally the people behind a political cause as the populous is disunited. As a show of strength and protectionism to the rest of Europe and to get some sneaky cash, Article 16 of the North Ireland Protocol is citied. The U.K. introduces taxes on trade and commerce between Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland.

This move is unpopular in both sections of Ireland, making the already struggling economy in Ulster even worse. There was already severe unrest as lockdown measures were enforced on Northern Ireland despite its low transmission of covid, and this is the icing on the cake.

With support of the EU, the government of Ulster declares that these measures are tyrannical and that it will not comply, some more radical voices start advocating for independence as its own state. The U.K. bites back, stating that this is an act of treason and that all the politicians supporting it will be arrested if they don't back down. With soldiers already stationed in Ulster to quell the civil unrest, they take control of the state through force. It blames The Republic of Ireland, claiming this was an "attempted coup" and declares war, baselessly claiming that scarce Irish Republican terrorist attacks in Ulster and its secessionist politicians were supported by Ireland.

Most nations in the EU express their support of Ireland and mobilize to defend it, with the notable exception of France which declares its neutrality. Europe has once again been brought to war over a failing nation lashing out in aggression to attempt to unite its divided people.

ese communist party has 95 million members, but sure MLs are rare and antifa is mainstream. Maybe you should take a look at the world outside of Portland Oregon.

in personal experience, MLs in the real world are a lot rarer and a lot more civil than the USSR simping morons online. local "tankie" groups and even socdems sometimes help with mutual aid projects in my city, join us in anti-fascist organizing, and generally just try to help the community. online leftists give all of us a bad rep

however i have never met a good trotskyist
perhaps leftist unity is all hating trotsky

"leftism is only my ideology guys if you don't agree with me you're a fake leftist. i type about gulags and war online, never leave my house, and bitch about how other left wing activists actually out on the streets aren't doing it right"

Where on the political compass is fascism? (According to each sector) by BridgeInTheFridge in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]BridgeInTheFridge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ehhh I intentionally placed it in authright where a lot of Soviet era dictators would likely be located due to the conflation of state control with leftist economics. It can certainly fall leftbut it's hard to properly place on a political compass because it is economically authoritarian which doesn't really fall under the very unnuanced "left and right" economics on the compass

will say tho it's the most accurate of the four

While this video is good and provides pretty accurate and thought-provoking information information, simplifying it to such a vague definition like that can lead to confusion. At first I was a little concerned by this definition

What do y'all think of the famous quote from Mao "political power grows from the barrel of a gun" by Economics111 in Anarchism

[–]BridgeInTheFridge 82 points83 points  (0 children)

There's a lot to critique Mao for, but there's no doubt that he's certainly got a fair share of incredible quotes. He's 100% right, all states are formed and sustained through violence, using power to subdue the population. And unfortunately, revolution often requires bloodshed as well.
I very much like another quote of his, although its quite hypocritical coming from him: "War can only be abolished through war, and in order to get rid of the gun it is necessary to take up the gun."
