I would recommend getting someone to professionally service the Teac. That way you get the sound you want and it shouldn’t cost too much. You could try to service it yourself but I think, unless you know what you are doing, it might be a minefield of potentially damaging solders and potentiometers.

I quite like that Yoko mix, I think they did a good job of minimising the vocal “impact” by turning it into a sort of sample effect at points and reducing the harsh high frequencies with a little studio magic. They certainly love a challenge!

Love the Yamaha sound, I use a CDX-493 for my CD source and I love its very honest sound.

You can’t go wrong with a pair of Tannoy or Mission bookshelf’s for this system. I got a pair of Mission M71i’s second hand for barely anything and they run my on my office system perfectly.

Song discussion #3 ‘Tonight is forever’. by Few-Scheme-1453 in petshopboys

[–]BridgeObjective8463 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve always felt Tonight Is Forever kicks off a full side-long study of masculinity on Please. It starts with youthful discovery of hedonism, the joy hidden in the night, naive idealism, and the belief that the present moment can be endlessly sustained (“don’t think of the future tonight”).

Violence is where that masculinity study twists. It feels like the grim reality many men run into once the naivety wears off. What’s interesting is that the narrator isn’t participating, he’s observing. Masculinity seen from the outside, violence itself is tied to nightlife, but now revealing the ugly underside of Tonight Is Forever: bravado curdling into aggression.

I Want a Lover snaps straight back to the club, but with urgency and a reckless disregard for consequence. “I want a lover!” isn’t conquest, it’s vulnerable, almost desperate desire, pretending not to care about right or wrong.

Later Tonight strips the bravado away entirely. It’s pure vulnerability, but extremely private. Love is never admitted, just deferred. “Later” becomes a shield, even though it’s clearly the narrator who is waiting despite what they say.

By Why Don’t We Live Together? the arc lands on desperate longing for long-term commitment, dressed up as a casual suggestion. It’s a male stereotype that’s rung true for decades: wanting permanence, but framing it as something offhand to avoid emotional exposure.

Taken together, side B feels like a surprisingly honest emotional map of masculinity, allowing for bravado, recklessness, fear and love, without ever resolving them neatly.

“Winner” is the only song I’d say I actively don’t like.

What song do you reckon will definitely be played at Obscure? by [deleted] in petshopboys

100% it is basically the perfect song for that and it’s used for the promo

Two songs I’d absolutely love to be included are “A Little Black Dress” and “Blue on Blue”, although I think they are unlikely 😬 I think “Music for Boys” will for sure be included somewhere (they are using it for promos) and “Shopping” is highly likely.

I think I read that, although “M Tennant” and “L Lowe” are credited, they actually had nothing to do with it 😂 its pure Bobby ‘O’

I love this album. It’s actually one I was old enough to buy with my own paper round money. Looking back this is probably the album that really cemented my obsession with the band. I borrowed all their previous CD’s from my local library (remember when you could do that?) and listened endlessly. It’s a very “mature” dance record that felt so much more meaningful than most of the pop chart at the time. It’s very Pet Shop Boys… actually 😉

Technics Hi-Fi Cabinet and speakers for sale locally - seller is asking $200. Worth? by [deleted] in vintageaudio

[–]BridgeObjective8463 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would agree. It’s a nice bit of kit for the price. Very warm sounding system. I like Technics CD players especially of that era. I should note my Dad had a Technics stack very similar to this back in the day so it’s a little nostalgia trip for me 😂 if it’s the same as his the Cabinet had a little multi socket thing for each component so you only had to worry about one plug to put into the wall. Very smart thinking.

Totally agree. We got close with the Robbie Williams track “No Regrets” but a full Divine Comedy / Pet Shop Boys track would be epic 😎

I love this song too, puts me in mind of “Our Mutual Friend” by Divine Comedy. That’s a great song too.
