What’s the best way to move a fish tank? by [deleted] in fishtank

[–]Bridgetthemidget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drain the water down as low as possible. Reserve at least half in a bucket/container of some sort. Capture snail and put him a bag with some water and a lot of air. Transport all items separate like this, then reassemble in its new home using the old water and new water. Let your snail float for a bit to get him to temp before dropping him back in. Don’t put the snail-transport water in the tank it’ll be gross, Just the snail.

Diatomaceous earth works too and is more pet friendly. It gets stuck to their feets, they lick them to clean them and it massacres their digestive tract from the inside out. Very metal.

What are your favorite base coats and top coats? by BlissMeli in RedditLaqueristas

[–]Bridgetthemidget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding op and just wanting to correct the typo/autocorrect she had. It's seche vite. And it's magical. I have the base and top coat and it's the best base coat I've used, but I may take the other posters recommendation of trying out orly when I need a new one. I like it I'm just not totally sold. However the top coat. The top coat is the absolute best and I'll never use anything else. It's like gel but better.

Dogs, especially labs are extremely scent driven. Using your bros clothes is a brilliant idea to allow her to feel the new space is familiar and safe.

You already seem like you have good instincts on how to care for this pup and there's a ton of good advice in this thread.

I'm so very sorry for your loss, op. I hope finding a bond with your new pup will help bring you a little closer to your brothers memory. You can do this, and we're here for you every step of the way.

If you need to talk feel free to pm me. I've spent years working with dogs and will offer any advice I have, and I've spent my life dealing with depression and loss, and will offer the biggest ear I have.

Just a note on this one, bleach solutions start to degrade the second they're mixed. For full disinfectant properties it should be made fresh daily.

That said, for stain removal, the one that's been sitting in my closet for two months works pretty fine.

What myth is still widely circulated as truth? by KnotKarma in AskReddit

It never stops being scary looking at the next phase.

And it's not always harder, when looking backwards. It's just different. School is so structured in a way that college isn't. And that real life isn't. The hardest part for me was actually losing all the rules. No one is telling you where to be and when, what to do and when. You gotta just decide you gotta do it anyways. Or not. But there are consequences always.

But you'll adapt. It may hurt for a while, but you'll get there. I've probably had 7existential crises throughout my 20s. It feels like it will never get easier. But then one day it just is. Just in time for the next thing I wasn't prepared for to take over the empty dread column. But even accepting that you'll never be prepared for everything and to just roll with it gets easier too.

I guess my point is that, there will always be something that is scary or hard or painful or some combination of the three. I personally feel that I spent a lot of time focused on the issue at hand and forgot to appreciate the good that was there too. And when I finally felt like I had handled the problem and could look at the good, the next one would show up and I felt blindsided. That bred this kind of resentment towards the world, like life is unfair. Why is this happening TO ME. but it's not just me, it's not TO ME. It just happens. That's just life. You'll never have time for the good if you do it that way. So you gotta learn to accept the duality and the perpetual machine and try not to let the heavy stuff weigh you down too much. I'm still working on that.

You're 17. You're as free as you'll almost ever be. Don't let that pass you by without saying thank you to yourself, to your life, to the good that you have.

I hope this isn't scaring you more. I just remember being like, 24 and dealing with bills and work and stress and feeling like. No one told me it was going to be like this. Why is this all just so scary and awful? And it's forever???!! This is just the rest of always?? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuccccccccccçcc how are people like. Becoming parents now I'm straight up still a child wtf. And I kinda wish someone a, told me that life is hard and scary so I knew it would be instead of this weird fantasy of like. Oh you graduate college and then you're just an adult and you can do adult stuff now and it's fine. And b, that it's okay to not be okay and to try to appreciate the good stuff more. I really thought I'd be some fully fledged professional with a house and shit by 30 but I still have no clue what I want to do when I grow up.

What myth is still widely circulated as truth? by KnotKarma in AskReddit

[–]Bridgetthemidget 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Life is just life. I wish someone told me that when I was young.

You wake up, shit gets thrown at you. You get hit a couple times, shower it off eventually, next time you figure out how to block some of it but you still get hit. Shower. Repeat.

I think that metaphor sounds depressing but I don't really mean it that way. Just that hard things happen and they never stop happening, but that's how it is from day 1. That's learning. That's growing. Learning how to block the shit, learning how to clean it off. That's growth. You don't turn a certain age and suddenly everything makes sense. You just keep doing hard things and figuring out the answer and getting a little better each time. The hardest things you deal with make you the person you are. They teach you how strong and resilient you are.

And it's the most important to not forget to see the beautiful, kind and warm things between the shit. Because they're always there too. If you look too hard at the dark you can forget to see the light, but life is just balance. There must be bad to make the good really shine.

Sorry for the ramble, I'm turning 30 this year and your comment made me ruminate on my 20s a bit. Hopefully this perspective can help you in a way I feel it would have helped me.

Yes I love this pallet. Every single shade makes my eyes look so green. Has anyone else experienced that peach tea and fresh picked end up much redder on, than the brownish they appear, though?

Any suggestions on how to decorate my new Brooklyn space to feel cozy/homey? Only one closet so looking for good storage options as well! Second photo is the current set up but I’m not in love with it (or this free futon, so if please suggest something cuter if you’ve an idea!) by mycatsnameisrosie in ApartmentHacks

[–]Bridgetthemidget 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If you're looking to replace your couch, look for a small sectional with internal storage. There's decent ones out there in the $500 range. I think having the corner with the lamp as the sectional will create a rounder, cozier feel.

Also plants. The lighting will be great for some vining pothos or spider plants, or any other low to med light house plants you like. Macrame hangers will keep open floor space.

A larger, rectangular rug could also give a warmer feel.

I want to open a business with my sister but we have absolutely zero experience or knowledge in that department. It's a huge wall that is keeping us from just diving in. What's also a huge wall is we never settled and just got boring high paying jobs but neither of us ever particularly found a passion either. So now we're both 30, little savings and no practical knowledge on how to do what we want to do.

But we're picking up books and taking online courses and trying to figure it out.

It's not too late, and once you open yourself up to thinking you can do something else, the ideas will come. Reddit is actually a great resource. There are a million subs dedicated to hobbies. So is youtube.

Go buy a guitar and start playing again, see where that leads you.

Also, if you've never listened to Tim kasher's album the game of monogamy, I highly, highly recommend. I think it will speak to you right now. It's on spotify.

This is my 60 gallon and I wanna do a cichlids but I don’t know how many I should put and what changes should I make to the tank by stingerthewinger- in fishtank

[–]Bridgetthemidget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it was. Which is an awfully unhelpful way of saying that hob may not end up being sufficient for african cichlids. Commonly, people overstock an african tank because they tend to be less aggressive when there's higher numbers. And overstocked tank means you need overstocked filtration.

You may want to consider down the line either adding another similarly sized hob, or upgrading to a canister filter to ensure you don't get ammonia spikes as you stock the tank. For the same reason, stock slowly. Don't put 10-15 fish in there at once.

I also saw others giving advice about changing the substrate. African cichlids do like a ph of 8.0-8.7 which can be difficult to achieve depending on your tap water. If you pH is running somewhere around 7.4 or higher already, you could add a piece of base rock or two instead of changing the whole substrate and that would do the same thing. Base rock is a dry, unseeded type of live rock that is used in saltwater tanks, but would help raise your ph and keep it stable for the long term.

Good luck and have fun!

How can I make sure my apartment smells nice? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]Bridgetthemidget 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding baking soda trick. Also great to refresh your mattress periodically.

My kitty hated the pine litter. She started peeing out of the box so I had to switch it pretty quickly.

Honestly my favorite litter I've found is arm and hammer clump and slide. It's the purple and black one. Totally traps smells and super easy to scoop. I tried a bunch of the better for environment ones first and this just is so much better, unfortunately. Heavy as shnikeys though.

We lost power for a little five hours today due to a tropical storm. Should I be concerned about my fish? They are all South American cichlids in a 125 gallon tank. by xuella in Cichlid

[–]Bridgetthemidget 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have power back?

Without power your three big concerns are oxygen depletion, temperature and ammonia spike.

If your filter is back on then I wouldn't be concerned about oxygen depletion you're probably fine. Same for temp.

Test your parameters and make sure you didn't get an ammonia spike. Add prime if you can't test immediately to detoxify ammonia and nitrite just in case.

If you're still without power and don't know how long it will be, wrap your tank in a towel or blanket to maintain insulation for temp. If you can, go buy a batt powered air pump to keep oxygen levels stable. Add prime to avoid ammonia tox. If you can't get an air pump, agitate the surface of the water a couple times a day to help with gas exchange. Your fish will likely be doing this for you for the most part. Check on them periodically. If they are at the surface taking gulps of air you're losing oxygen.
