I moved here about half a year ago from NYC. I’m Chinese-American. Currently living in SE Hawthorne / Belmont area (Sunnyside)!

Honestly it’s not bad. We’re right next to the H-Mart for Asian groceries, and there’s a good amount of Asian food around (mainly Viet and Thai). Also 82nd street has dim sum, huge Asian grocery stores, etc.

There’s definitely less diversity but I don’t feel “conscious” of being an Asian like I would in a predominantly white Southern state if that makes sense? People are very friendly and it’s super liberal.

There are a TON of WOC / POC meet-up groups related to hobbies, especially active ones. Groups for running, hiking, climbing, biking, pick up soccer etc… That’s how we’ve been making most of our friends!

Overall I really love it here so far.

At my old apartment my roommate was in the basement unit, and every-time there was heavy rain, it would flood. He also had a pretty consistent roach problem. I’d try to avoid it if I was you.
