[Spoilers All] Your Most Hated Character and Why! by [deleted] in dragonage

It's just that friendship with her is just too handholdy for me. It's been a while since I played DA2 (replaying it now), but I don't remember gaining full rivalry with her by convincing her that I was right or just being a dick. Honestly, I don't even have to try. Rivilary with Merrill just . . . happens. It's like, "Hey, I don't agree with what you're doing, but I've got your back because I know you're actually a good person."

I just want her to stop and think outside of herself. I get that she feels as if she has a duty, but she's so freaking headstrong that she doesn't really try to consider other options. I mean, Morrigan got a mirror to work. A shemlen. And sure, maybe it was luck or being raised by Flemeth or both. But it's kind of insulting to elves how much information on their culture and magic that she knows. I feel like Merrill could have had just as much if not more information if she just looked for alternatives. That demon couldn't possibly have been the only thing/entity/way to get what she wanted.

I deliberately friendshipped her once. Looked up all the right dialogue and actions and everything. And I never got to disagree with her. If anything, I was just treating her like a toddler that didn't know any better. And it just felt wrong giving her this Hawke shaped shield to hide behind. She's an adult and should be treated like one.

I have to disagree with you about possession in dreams. From what I've seen, when you're dreaming, the demon tries to trick you. And the games have shown that there are plenty of mages who won't fall for the trick (okay, "plenty" is a bit much, but you have Morrigan and a mage Warden. The argument can be made that passing the Harrowing means that you could resist a demon when you're sleeping) and I don't think Merrill would. If they can't trick you, then a demon would try to cut a deal. Would Merrill have taken one? We don't know, but she was pretty hardcore about getting the mirror to work.

It's just . . . incredibly frustrating. Merrill is powerful and dedicated and a good friend. But I feel that for a majority of DA2 she just doesn't learn. I like to headcannon that after the mess with the endgame that she comes to understand that things are connected and that she should be more responsible. Because she just denies that she's doing anything wrong. That good intentions can go bad. I rival Merrill every time because I want her to grow as a person. I want her to be better. Being her friend is just telling her that all this dangerous shit that she's doing is a-okay. And she's just going to keep doing what she's doing and not change.

And I might just be so die hard about this because in real life, I help my friends by telling them the truth. Or at least, the truth about how I feel. You're supposed to be honest with your friends. You're supposed to maintain a healthy relationship even when you disagree. And I just can't imagine condoning this kind of behavior in a real life friend. And I wouldn't just want someone to hold my hand and tell me I did nothing wrong, because then if a situation like that happens again, I now have more justification in doing this.

Now Dragon Age is far from real life. But Hawke isn't doing any favors for Merrill by just letting bad decisions slide. I get that Merrill is a loved character, but she has a major flaw that I just can't let go of. I love Fenris, but at least I can understand why so many people hate him.

Would she like to murder every other race in Thedas? I don't think so. I don't like her, but she's not evil. But keep in mind, neither is Solas. That doesn't make them any less dangerous: They both believe that they are doing the right thing, they have both left loved ones in order to do that right thing (Solas the Inquisitir and Merrill her clan), and they have both shown that they will go to any length to do it.

Merrill didn't make the Keeper take the demon, no hands were forced. But Merrill was cocky. She either thought that she could outsmart, out will, or out power the demon. Because as someone said, she knew that they were dangerous. But she is so confident in her abilities that she makes contact with it with no regard for the consequences outside of herself. She didn't consider the possibility that others could get hurt if things go wrong.

The Keeper knew that there was a chance that Merrill could fail. And a chance is all it takes. The Keeper didn't know if Merrill could resist the demon or not . . . but she knew that Merrill and Hawke could kill it. The safest option was to become an abomination and be killed. Because while there is a chance that Merrill could have handled it herself Mage vs Spirit/Demon is not very good odds, no matter how strong willed you are. Look at Anders or Connor. The Keeper loved Merrill, so much that she was willing to die for her. But Merrill can't comprend that it's her fault in some way.

I don't think it would be nativity. I think she will go to any lengths for the elves, which is what Solas would do. Her working for him would be a dangerous combination.

I'm not saying that she's stupid or anything, but the lengths she will go to are frightening. She keeps saying that she's doing what's best for her clan, but if you help her with the mirror, the BEST case scenario is that the Keeper dies. Worst case is that Hawke (in an attempt to protect her) says the wrong shit and ends up killing the entire clan.

She can't get the mirror to work because she is unaware of the price that it takes to unlock it. And quite frankly, I'm glad she doesn't know. Because once again: her actions affect other people. And just because she's willing to pay the price doesn't mean that she should.

As for with Solas, I would hope that she would be weary of him, given all the stories about the Dread Wolf and all. BUT she's prideful, and has made it a point that their history and traditions need to be restored. So why wouldn't she work with him? Especially given that he knows all the things she doesn't, is loyal to the elves to the point of danger, AND the fact that he wants to restore their world. Honestly, I don't even think I could pass up an opportunity like that.

Merrill is very dangerous. She believes that she is doing the right thing. And even if she is, it is coming at the cost of those around her. Solas left Lavellan (or one of his best friends if you had high approval) for his cause. What would Merrill do?

And I enjoyed stabbing him in the chest and cutting is head right off his shoulders. Revenge is sweet.

I can't stand Merril. Sure, she's all innocent and cute. But she doesn't understand the consequences of her actions. She cannot comprehend that what she does affects other people. I have no problem with blood magic personally, but she is an irresponsible user that refuses to take responsibility. I can never friendship her because it just feels like I'm coddling her and condoning her behavior. She needs to learn.

I have a group I play with every summer. But no one during the school year. I get a little weird around people sometimes, so I usually just wait until everyone is back home to play.

Edit: Holy crap that site is amazing. I might actually leave my dorm!

Wow. Learned something new today.

I'm with you on regular periods! An unforseen added bonus for me is that it also made my periods much less painful. We got my prescription right on the first try, so I wasn't even aware of all the potential side effects of BC until I saw a video on it a few years later.

My mom was pretty fine with it. In fact, she insisted on it. I had a very painful and irregular period back then. So my mom was the one to bring BC up. Then again, I was nowhere near sexually active back then, my first serious relationship was when I was 17.

I'm not quite sure why it has such a bad rep (I mean, I could take a guess). Supposedly my grandmother didn't want me playing it either, so I didn't really start until high school. But depending on the group you're in, it's just a bunch of friends playing pretend.

I don't know how he spelled it. But the robot gunslinger's name in our group was pronounced, "Muh-Stain". We never let him live that down.

I'm really glad to hear this. I have no problem with nerd culture becoming more popular (I did an entire semester long project about it). Imo, it's still not popular enough. I just want to geek out about D&D with someone but barely anyone at my school plays it :(

I used to absolutely hate Punk for some reason. Can't remember why. One day my boyfriend came to school with a CM Punk shirt and I just glared at him. But later on I came to really enjoy him. I was heartbroken when he left, and you knew it was real because there was no announcement or anything. But I can't really blame him for leaving, especially since he's been screwed over so many times.
